Drive problem

I was rsync'ing data from one system to another, and the recipient suddenly started throwing DRDY errors. Now, it's a fairly new WD Red 3TB, and I'd think it was just a bad drive... but I'm really confused by this, from the logs: Jun 15 15:34:43 <servername> kernel: ata3: SError: { Dispar } Dispar? And googling, every reference I find to that word always has something else there. System's running 5.11. Filesystem's xfs. Any thoughts? mark

gvim current directory

When I gvim a file from gnome, gvim's working directory is always my home directory. That is not what I want. It is inconvenient for :vi , :r and :w something.else . Is there a way to automatically cause gvim's current directory to be the directory of the edited file? I am aware of workarounds involving the command line. I am aware of gedit. Two partitions with samd UUID??

I seem to have partitions on two different disks with the same UUID: [tim@helen ~]$ sudo blkid /dev/sda2 /dev/sda2: LABEL="/boot1" UUID="5bbc8e95-6108-41f5-bc0e-5b5f8df5ce03" TYPE="ext3" [tim@helen ~]$ sudo blkid /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdb2: LABEL="/boot1" UUID="5bbc8e95-6108-41f5-bc0e-5b5f8df5ce03" TYPE="ext3" This is causing some confusion, as these are boot partitions, and grub2 seems to be choosing the wrong one. I wonder how this occurred; I thought different partitions on different disks necessarily had different UUIDs? Maybe I used dd at some point. Centos 6.6 not booting on Virtualbox on Windows host

Hi, I downloaded the QuickStart VM from Cloudera that has preinstalled Spark/Hadoop etc. I have been working on that for the last 4-5 weeks and it was running absolutely fine, but recently I had to restart my VM. Since, then the VM does not restart. It shows the loading bar but after that it seems as if it stopped responding. It only shows a small black screen <http://i.stack.imgur.com/g4JKZ.png> and does not go anywhere from there. The log <http://i.stack.imgur.com/KVYxV.png> hangs at Setting up logical volume management : 3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vol group" now active. I tried logging in using the Single User Mode but still the system hangs at the point. I don't know what is going wrong?

NIC recongized but cant ping

Hello, I am having a weird networking issue. Now I know this is a centos mailinglist, and the system I am having issues with is proxmox ve 3.3 (debian based) but I am sure one of you guys faced this issue. So I am having an issue of no connectivity with my NICs. I have manually configured and I have tried dhcp. The OS sees the NICs loads the drivers, but I cannout ping anything on the lan. The only card that works out of the box is my only PCIE intel dual 1000 nic. my PCIX based intel pro 1000 nor my realk r8169 nics work, yet debian sees the NIC. I can bring them up and configure no errors. I just cannot ping anything on my lan any help would be appericated Thanks

Any alternative to Single User Mode

Hi, I am working on Centos6.6 on a VirtualBox on Windows Host. Today I started to have booting issues in the OS. It won't get past the loading screen. I checked and found that the files related to the user "cloudera" on the system were not accessible. Only the files related to root were accessible. This is why I was am not able to do a single user login but an emergency login was possible. This is just a guess. This all happened due to some update in the Virtual Machine that I use to run CentOS. Is there any workaround for this issue? Thanks and regards, Animesh Pandey

2 or more bridges not working

Hi, Adding one bridge to cent7 works fine. But when adding a second bridge it either takes the IP from the First bridge and stops the first bridge from working or Stops the first bridge from working and does not work for either bridge I’m adding BRIDGE=br3 to ifcfg-eth0 and then creat ifcfg-br3 and adding the necessary requirments TYPE, BOOTPROTO, DELAY Is there a reason why Cent7 won’t except two or more bridges? Thunderbird question

I was looking at the output of thunderbird --help and I see there is no cli arg that makes it start with a specific profile (which can be any one of n profiles) - unless I am not reading the output properly :) I am trying to avoid having to select the profile when starting thunderbird on different worspaces for different profiles.

I displayed, as a web page, a list of search results created in PHP, from MySQL. Firefox prevents me looking at the web page's source coding. Right-click, view source, produces this display:- "Document Expired "This document is no longer available. "The requested document is not available in Firefox's cache. centos 7 will not install :(

Please ... any info on how to proceed??? After I made sure it had the correct sha256sum, and after I burned it to DVD, and and dd'd the DVD back to a temp file and again checked the sha256sum of the temp file, all was OK. Same sha256sum. So, I rebooted the machine and it booted up from the DVD. I got a message that it was not using VNC, Then after that immediately an error came out saying something about xbi...something not working. Machine did not proceed any further. I rebooted agian and agian, same error. The machine is a Dell Latitude E6500, Dual Core 2.8GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HD. Any info on this? On my phone, I have an image of the screen when the error is belched out. I have to yet be able to extract it out of the phone. Since I have no OS to run on my machine, I am using the live Knoppix, which has no sense to mount the storage of the android phone; so the I am unable to attach it, nor a way to upload it to a free upload site.

How to preserve the login session's running apps without hibernation

When I was running mate on another computer, I would log off or shutdown, and power up and login again and mate would restore all the gui apps in all the workspaces. Gnome does not do that. Also, I do not have a way to upgrade to Centos 7 because 1. graphic installation fails (as I have posted here before). 2. I do not want to do text install because it will clobber my existing partitioning scheme and does not provide for modifying the automatic partitioning scheme.

off topic - need help registering to the smplayer forum

Hi All, smplayer has no mailing list. I tried to register at http://forum.smplayer.info/ucp.php?mode=register but the capchas are so incredibly impossible to discern that I gave up after 5 tries. I tried the audio option, but the audio option plays so garbled it is impossible to understand. My audio is great. I play youtube vids with great clarity. So I am hoping someone who is on that forum to inform the registration web page's designer to do something about this problem. Thanx to all who show some info on how to get this done.

NetworkManager / wireless on latest Centos7 installs

Hello All, on the latest installs I've done, on 2 different types of Latitude laptops, with 3 different wireless cars, of Centos7 and Mate desktop, it looks to me like NetworkManager is nog managing wireless. When clicking the nm icon in the top right corner, I'm not seeing access points. Wifi seems enabled [root@localhost ~]# nmcli g STATE CONNECTIVITY WIFI-HW WIFI WWAN-HW WWAN connected full enabled enabled enabled enabled but unmanaged [root@localhost ~]# nmcli d DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION enp0s25 ethernet connected enp0s25 lo loopback unmanaged -- wlp12s0 wifi unmanaged -- I always start from a minimal install. Then I install X Window packages, and Mate The only difference I can think of, is that I now installed from Centos7.1 minimal install media, and before from Centos7 DVD. Effectiveness of CentOS vm.swappiness

Hi all, This might not be CentOS related at all. Sorry about that. I have lots of C6 & C7 machines in use and all of them have the default swappiness of 60. The problem now is that a lot of those machines do swap although there is no memory pressure. I'm now thinking about lowering swappiness to 1. But I'd still like to find out why this happens. The only common thing between all those machines is that there are nightly backups done with Bacula. I once came across issues with the fs-cache bringing Linux to start paging out. Any hints, explanations and suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers, Shorty

sudoers

My experience with RHEL and CentOS is quite limited, andwould classify me as novice. I have been running CentOS 6for a little over a year and recently brought up a CentOS 7system as a virtual machine under Windows 7. One of the first things I usually do after installation isedit the /etc/sudoers file using visudo to give a specificuser or specific users privileges as indicated in the fileexcerpt below. The visudo editor issued no error messageswhen creating the line for sarah. ## user MACHINE=COMMANDS ## ## The COMMANDS section may have other options added to it. ## ## Allow root to run any commands anywhere root ALL=(ALL) ALL sarah ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL On our CentOS 6 systems, the NOPASSWD option works as itis intended to work. No password prompt is presented for commands such as "sudo cat /etc/sudoers". On CentOS 7,the NOPASSWD option does not seem to work, and a promptfor sarah's password is always issued. Can someone help solve this CentOS 7 mystery? Thank you and best regards.

newbie question on installation over existing Linux

If I choose to do a fresh install of CentOS 6 with "replace existing Linux systems", will it also wipe out my /home directory? In the past when I've done this with another Linux distro, /home was not affected. Or, would I need to do "fresh" install and then muck with partitioning using a Custom Layout? Right now, it's kind of looking like the latter to me, and if so, will I lose data? I spent some time on the Forums and reading the RH documentation, but, no real answers to this specific question. Centos7 - Mate - Zombie printer icon remains after printing

Hello All, I have the problem described in this bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1116756 It is also descibed in some detail here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1264811 After printing, the print icon stays in the system tray until I logout. Why is sha256-generic preferred over sha256-ssse3?

The newly-released kernel v2.6.32-504.23.4.el6 includes the back-ported SHA256-SSSE3 driver. Why is the generic version of the SHA256 driver selected at runtime instead of the SSSE3 version on this x86_64 system? Yes, my CPU does support the SSSE3 instruction set, and the use of SHA256 is invoked by the LUKS "cipher=aes-cbc-essiv:sha256" option. On the running system I see that the sha256-ssse3 driver is not loaded. Further evidence that the generic driver is in use: # grep sha256 /proc/crypto name : sha256 driver : sha256-generic So... what's the trick to using the sha256-ssse3 driver instead of the generic driver? Resize KVM NTFS file system

Hey all, I resized a partition inside a KVM RAW file system disk image. When I start the Win7 virtual machine it does not report the new partition size. It shows the file system as 15GB instead of the 50GB size of the partition that it lives on. I gather from hours so reading the manual that I need to increase the NTFS file system size to fill the new larger partition where it lives. The ntfresize command does not seem to be compatible with disk image files. Do I have to mount the disk image file with a loopback first? I tried doing it inside the Win7 VM using the disk management tools but that didn't work either. how do I make my headset work

How do I make my headset work. Before I try it with anything else, I'd like to make it work with arecord and aplay. VLC and movie player can make sounds with my external speakers. though not in my headset yet. I've got an insignia NS-PAH5101 headset. As directed, the red connector is in the pink spot and the green connector in green spot in the back of my computer. arecord folloed by aplay just gets me static. To the best of my knowledge, my singing is distinguishable from static. hey guys, I'm trying to do an rsync of the entire /var directory, but exclude just the /var/www directory. So far I've tried these approaches: rsync -avzp --exclude-from=/var/www /var/ /mnt/var/ rsync -avzp --exclude=/var/www /var/ /mnt/var/ But neither has worked. rpmforge vs epel

I've been informed that rpmforge and epel do not play well together and that if I use both, epel should have the higher (lower numbered) priority. Alas I had it the other way around. rpmforge messed up my effort to get audacity. I no longer need audacity, but would like to fix the situation before some other problem crops up. Install using "yum localinstall". The resulting build of less works wonderfully on my C6 boxes, consistently with the versions on C4, C5 and C7. I'm sure there must be other people who would find the corrected RPMs useful, so my questions now are: a) Is there a contributors repo to which it would be appropriate to submit them? b) Is there a better way to number the release for this version? Everything seems to be working fine, except that while spam is being marked as ***Spam***, it is ending up in ~/Maildir/cur/ . I'd like to divert it to ~/Maildir/.Spam/ (where I can examine it with sa-learn). Thanks for the suggestions. My case ended up being a large local variable (stack data)that was fine before and not fine on CentOS 7. If found it by #ifdef entire main function, my program then ran. I then just started letting in chunks of code to narrow it down. jerry

I find the guest CentOS can works OK when using ethernet cable, but can't get IP address via wireless network. Mail Merge data to a pdf file by overlaying the data on the image

Everyone, I am looking for a utility that I can use to do a mail merge of data to a pdf image file. The image file does not have any active fields, but will be just an image file. I would like to overlay names addresses etc. We currently do this with a pcl file by just overlaying the data with pcl print positions. However, in order to get the pcl file from an original pdf file we have to use gimp to convert the pdf to pcl file, and we always lose a little resolution. I was wondering if anyone knows of a utility to perform this function without first converting the image to a pcl file. Thanks, -- Greg Ennis

less for CentOS6 with POSIX regex?

When I started using CentOS 6 instead of CentOS 5, I discovered that "less" no longer understood \< and \>, which I had been used to using since almost forever. Eventually research revealed that in the Fedora version on which RHEL 6 was based, "less" had been built with the PCRE regex library instead of a POSIX one. So instead of \< and \>, I had to use \b. I found a bugzilla entry about this, which showed that the change had been reverted in a later Fedora release. So I tested CentOS 7, and found "less" has been reverted to using POSIX regex, which I'm glad about. What I want to know is: do any repos have a replacement version of "less" for CentOS 6 that has been built with POSIX regex, so that I don't have to keep switching between the two styles when working on different CentOS versions? In the past I've booted up with a GNU/Linux live CD that has GParted and enlarged the partition that Windows occupies. Expect Windows to do a check disk (I think) following the resize. Or [instead of using GParted] I'd expect you could boot to a live environment and use fdisk to delete the Windows partition (after marking down the start of the existing partition). Then create an NTFS partition in the same place that is of the larger desired size. From there you might be able to boot your Windows OS and have it resize ... but I don't know for certain (though worth a test if you have a backup and don't mind testing it!). If you were feeling adventurous, you could also loopback mount it and choose my second suggestion with fdisk. But if you had gparted or ntfs-3g you could also use utilities to manipulate the disk and file system. I installed CentOS 7 from the DVD iso file: CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1503-01.iso Yum update was used (with no update issues) to install and update many packages. The installer is significantly different from CentOS 6 where one can basicallychoose to "install everything" if one has the patience to check all productsand all software options within those categories. During the CentOS 7 install,the "Development Workstation" was selected with all options checked. The new gnome Desktop menu bar still has Applications and Places, but the Systemmenu is gone. I even tried installing the minimal CentOS 7 system and then addingthe gnome, but that yielded the same result, still no System menu item on the bar. One interesting fact is that the RH admin guide actually refers to the System menu and other items on the menu bar but some of them are actually absent. Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-7-Desktop_Migration_and_Administration_Guide-en-US.pdf Can anyone provide assistance in getting the system menu back in gnome. Thanks

What has happened to the CentOS logo?

Has the CentOS logo disappeared from CentOS-7? I thought the logo in CentOS-6 was very pleasant. Also I liked the way in which one increasing circle inside another showed how the boot was progressing. The dots going round and round in Microsoft fashion in CentOS-7 is a retrograde step, I think. creating RPMs from CRAN tarballs

This is not specifically a CentOS question, but I am creating RPMS for CentOS 6 from some CRAN tarballs. I run R2spec -s tarball to create a spec file, and most of the time it works ok, but sometimes (RPostgresSQL, Rcpp for example) the package has test or example programs that start with #!/usr/bin/r with lower case r, and the resulting package then winds up with a dependency on /usr/bin/r, which can't be resolved. So far I have solved it by editing all the files and replacing with /usr/bin/R, recreating the tarball and going through the process again, but I have to believe there is an easier way. Is there a option to not create the dependency? Thanks Tony Schreiner

Migration to centos 7 and program seg faulting

Everything on Centos 7 seems fine - except - my program. I am trying to compile and run on centos 7. Everything compiles/runs on C6, the executable from C6 runs on C7. when I compile and run on C7 - I get a SEG fault. when I debug: gdb program break main run I get a seg fault at or before main What might I be looking for in this case? Bacula + Nagios

Hi list, I'm trying to monitoring bacula (dir, sd and fd) with nagios and plugin check_bacula. check_bacula was installed from repo base, current OS C7.1. When running check_bacula I get error with authentication: "BACULA CRITICAL - Cannot authenticate to Director: 1999 Authorization failed." and from bacula.log: Unable to authenticate console "not real" at client:127.0.0.1:9101. I suppose that It can be a password mismatch but all password/name combination are correct. Anyone has the same problem? Thanks in advance.

managing logins for different classes of servers

Our environment has several "classes" of servers, such as "development", "production", "qa", "utility", etc. Then we have all our users. There's no obvious mapping between users and server class. Some users may have access to only one class, some may span multiple classes, etc. And for maximum complexity, some classes of machines use local (i.e. /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow) authentication, others use Kerberos. With enough users and enough classes, it gets to be more than one can easily manage with a simple spreadsheet or other crude mechanism. Plus the ever-growing risk of giving a user access to a class he shouldn't have. Is there a simple centralized solution that can simplify the management of this? One caveat though is that our "production" class machines should not have any external dependencies. These are business-critical, so we try to minimize any single point of failure (e.g. a central server). Plus the production class machines are distributed in multiple remote locations. Any thoughts?

daemon in /etc/init.d/functions creates no pifile?

Hi, we started using centos7 to run kvm+libvirt. For novnc to virtual machines I like to start websockify as a daemon by libvirt (as a hook) Under Debian I used the line: # start-stop-daemon --start --chuid $RUNUSER --make-pidfile --pidfile $PIDFILE --startas $PROGRAM -- $OPTIONS which creates a nice pidfile. In Centos I figured out, to include /etc/init.d/functions and I tried: # daemon --user $RUNUSER --pidfile=$PIDFILE $PROGRAM $OPTIONS But this seems not to create a pidfile at all. It checks only if a pidile exist already. This is executed at the end # $cgroup $nice runuser -s /bin/bash $user -c "$corelimit >/dev/null 2>&1 ; $*" Am I missed something? Native ZFS on Linux

I have a question that has been puzzling me for some time ... what is the reason RedHat chose to go with btrfs rather than working with the ZFS-on-Linux folks (now OpenZFS)? Is it a licensing issue, political, etc? Although btrfs is making progress, ZFS is far more mature, has a few more stable features (especially Raid-z3) and has worked flawlessly for me on CentOS-6 and Scientific Linux-6. I used ZFS for a couple of large file servers with no problems. The only annoying part was having to manually install the kernel module each time a kernel update was issued. Because FreeBSD has built-in drivers for LSI cards (I use JBOD mode) and strong ZFS support, I've switched to FreeNAS with it's default native ZFS and driver support for LSI. I would have preferred to stick with CentOS, but FreeNAS just made things easier to manage. It also seems about twice as fast as ZFS on Linux (same hardware), but that may simply be a tuning issue. Is there any chance that a native ZFS (rather than btrfs) will ever emerge in RHEL/CentOS? Just curious, because I'd love to return to CentOS/SL next time I build large file servers. As an aside, I have used only WD Black and WD RedPro drives for RAID, and not had any issues. Green drives are scary :-) Chuck

[OT] recover/reset 'owner' password on win7 os

i inherited a toshiba satellite l455d with win7 installed, install cd lost. 'owner' passworded, forgotten by previous owner. 'guest' is does not have a password. i want remove unneeded music software and files and other crud before i defrag the drive so as to have more room to dual boot linux. i would wipe win7, but not an option at this time. i booted laptop, pulled 'ntpassword', copied files to a usb stick, tried to run; X:syslinux.exe -ma X: as 'guest', it failed. how can i make usb stick bootable from linux? any/all suggestion/help is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance. -- peace out. Project Management Software

I have a need to use a project management software package under Centos 6.6 and have started looking at ProjectLibre which is a Java package. Unfortunately it seems to have shortcomings when it comes to following up projects and my current understanding is that it falls short of Microsoft Project 2010, i.e., a previous version. Does anyone have experience with this type of software and what would you recommend? Thank you in advance.

Redistributing CentOS as part of a package

Hi all, I'm developing a program that is not a distro, per-se, but sort of acts like one. Basically, it's a modified CentOS ISO with some extra RPMs added, unneeded RPMs removed and containing a modified boot screen and install selection list. The list says "CentOS", so a user knows the installed appliance will be based on CentOS, but it also has our project's branding along with it (splash screen, our custom installer's images and text, etc). We do not modify /etc/issue, /etc/redhat-release or so one. So I wanted to ask the community if this is OK, as I think I'm sitting in something of a gray area between a straight custom CentOS ISO and a new distro. If this isn't the right place to ask, a pointer to the right place would be much appreciated. I am happy to answer any further questions (here or in private) from the CentOS team if it would help clarify things. Using Mariadb databases from old server

I'm running CentOS-7, but I left some MySQL databases on my old CentOS-6.5 partition which I'd like to retrieve. I assume they are contained in the file /var/lib/mysql/ibdata1 ? Could I just copy this file to /var/lib/mysql in CentOS-7? Redistributing pre-installed CentOS

Hello List, I've got a project that will involve distributing pre-configured CentOS servers to customer sites. No packages have been modified, and it's a pretty straightforward content caching server. The packages are all from CentOS repositories, nginx from EPEL, and Puppet packages from Puppet Labs. The only shell on these boxes is pretty locked down however, and I know some licenses, like Apache for example, require displaying the license. Any tips on the least cumbersome way to avoid violating any of the involved licenses? I remember many years ago, I think Debian had a command to display various licenses in a consolidated way. Is there a similar facility available, or a page we could link to? -Matt

VNC Server Centos 7 specify window manager

I have a simple question, how do I specify a gnome session with VNc Server. I correctly setup up the connections but when I log in all I get is a blue screen with a checkbox in the upper left corner saying "Accept clipboard from viewers". My guess is that I am loading generuc X11 by default. How do I specify in the etc/systemd/system/vncserver@:4.service file that I want it to load gnome? I tried editing my .vnc/xstartup file but that seems to have no effect. my xstartup file #!/bin/sh exec gnome-session & ~

Getting Megaraid Software Manager Installed On CentOS 7

Well I'm pleased that my raid card post brought all the enthusiasts out of the woodwork. So who has installed LSI's MSM software under CentOS 7? I've downloaded the linux-x64 package from: http://www.lsi.com/products/raid-controllers/pages/megaraid-sas-9361-8i.aspx Extracted the files and run "install.csh -a". This installs vivaldiframeworkd under /etc/rc.d/init.d and that runs fine. I can access the host from a Windows install of MSM just fine. What seems to missing is the monitoring software. I think the run-time script is called mr_monitor. It doesn't seem to be installed. Attempts to configure monitor alerts from Windows returns "monitor is unreachable." Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Booting back into CentOS-6

I'm currently running CentOS-7, but I'd like to re-boot into CentOS-6.5 which I have on another partition. Although this OS is in the grub list when I boot, if I try to run it I get a segfault. I guess this is something to do with the change from grub to grub2? This, IMHO, is one of the more annoying bugs with the newer GRUB (which i assume is the bootloader you are using). Specifically the newer grub can't, won't boot from a drive other than the one grub is on. suggest you revert to grub 0.97 or, if any boot loader is or can be put on the drive with the 6.5 distro you can make that drive the boot drive in the bios, which is how i do it. i.e. i just put grub on any drive i might want to boot from and install etc. with the drive i want to be able to boot to set as the boot drive in the bios. of course, depending on how you are mounting drives this may break links etc. since the bios will have different names for the drives due to the different order of the boot media list in the bios. hope that helps, it is highly annoying. Hi, I try to add a certificate to a fresh certificate db, but the trust attributes are not set as expected. Neither can I change tham. New controller card issues

Running CentOS 5 (long story, will be updated some day). A 5 yr old Dell PE R415. Whoever spec'd the order, they got the cheapest, embedded controller. Push came to shove - these things gag on a drive > 2TB. So, we bought some PERC H200's for it, and its two mates. This morning, I brought the system down, and put in the card, and moved the SATA cables. This did not end well. The new card seemed to see the drives, it loaded the initrd... and kernel panic'd every time when it went to switch root. I went into the card's firmware and set the first drive to boot. No change. Upshot was that I actually had to pull the card - once it was in, and set, it insisted that it was 0 in boot order, and would not let me take it out, even though I'd reconnected the SATA connector to the on-board one. So: my manager and I are suspecting that the initrd simply doesn't have the driver for the card. I'm going to rebuild the initrd (once I figure out how to do that without the card in the box). The reason I'm posting is to ask y'all if anyone out there has some *other* thoughts as to what the problem might be, other than the initrd. Thanks in advance. mark
