NUX Skype for Linux

I had cause to install the Skype for Linux package from the NUX repo. I discover that this package is configured to automatically start Skype whenever one logs on to the Gnome desktop. This behaviour I do not wish. However, there seems to be no option in Skype to turn that 'feature' off. Is there any way to disable this in Gnome or elsewhere? How can I get .xsession-errors back?

I did some research and see a LOT of folks would love to get rid of their .xsession-errors file and I'm in the opposite situation -- where is mine? Do I have to install or enable something special to get this back. All my users are starting X with startx and the default .xinitrc. Drive problem

I was rsync'ing data from one system to another, and the recipient suddenly started throwing DRDY errors. Now, it's a fairly new WD Red 3TB, and I'd think it was just a bad drive... but I'm really confused by this, from the logs: Jun 15 15:34:43 <servername> kernel: ata3: SError: { Dispar } Dispar? And googling, every reference I find to that word always has something else there. System's running 5.11. Filesystem's xfs. Any thoughts? mark

gvim current directory

When I gvim a file from gnome, gvim's working directory is always my home directory. That is not what I want. It is inconvenient for :vi , :r and :w something.else . Is there a way to automatically cause gvim's current directory to be the directory of the edited file? I am aware of workarounds involving the command line. I am aware of gedit. Two partitions with samd UUID??

I seem to have partitions on two different disks with the same UUID: [tim@helen ~]$ sudo blkid /dev/sda2 /dev/sda2: LABEL="/boot1" UUID="5bbc8e95-6108-41f5-bc0e-5b5f8df5ce03" TYPE="ext3" [tim@helen ~]$ sudo blkid /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdb2: LABEL="/boot1" UUID="5bbc8e95-6108-41f5-bc0e-5b5f8df5ce03" TYPE="ext3" This is causing some confusion, as these are boot partitions, and grub2 seems to be choosing the wrong one. I wonder how this occurred; I thought different partitions on different disks necessarily had different UUIDs? Maybe I used dd at some point. Centos 6.6 not booting on Virtualbox on Windows host

Hi, I downloaded the QuickStart VM from Cloudera that has preinstalled Spark/Hadoop etc. I have been working on that for the last 4-5 weeks and it was running absolutely fine, but recently I had to restart my VM. Since, then the VM does not restart. It shows the loading bar but after that it seems as if it stopped responding. It only shows a small black screen <http://i.stack.imgur.com/g4JKZ.png> and does not go anywhere from there. The log <http://i.stack.imgur.com/KVYxV.png> hangs at Setting up logical volume management : 3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vol group" now active. I tried logging in using the Single User Mode but still the system hangs at the point. I don't know what is going wrong?

NIC recongized but cant ping

Hello, I am having a weird networking issue. Now I know this is a centos mailinglist, and the system I am having issues with is proxmox ve 3.3 (debian based) but I am sure one of you guys faced this issue. So I am having an issue of no connectivity with my NICs. I have manually configured and I have tried dhcp. The OS sees the NICs loads the drivers, but I cannout ping anything on the lan. The only card that works out of the box is my only PCIE intel dual 1000 nic. my PCIX based intel pro 1000 nor my realk r8169 nics work, yet debian sees the NIC. I can bring them up and configure no errors. I just cannot ping anything on my lan any help would be appericated Thanks

Any alternative to Single User Mode

Hi, I am working on Centos6.6 on a VirtualBox on Windows Host. Today I started to have booting issues in the OS. It won't get past the loading screen. I checked and found that the files related to the user "cloudera" on the system were not accessible. Only the files related to root were accessible. This is why I was am not able to do a single user login but an emergency login was possible. This is just a guess. This all happened due to some update in the Virtual Machine that I use to run CentOS. Is there any workaround for this issue? Thanks and regards, Animesh Pandey

2 or more bridges not working

Hi, Adding one bridge to cent7 works fine. But when adding a second bridge it either takes the IP from the First bridge and stops the first bridge from working or Stops the first bridge from working and does not work for either bridge I’m adding BRIDGE=br3 to ifcfg-eth0 and then creat ifcfg-br3 and adding the necessary requirments TYPE, BOOTPROTO, DELAY Is there a reason why Cent7 won’t except two or more bridges? I’m using NM after a yum update. Best, Steve

Thunderbird question

I was looking at the output of thunderbird --help and I see there is no cli arg that makes it start with a specific profile (which can be any one of n profiles) - unless I am not reading the output properly :) I am trying to avoid having to select the profile when starting thunderbird on different worspaces for different profiles.

I displayed, as a web page, a list of search results created in PHP, from MySQL. Firefox prevents me looking at the web page's source coding. Right-click, view source, produces this display:- "Document Expired "This document is no longer available. "The requested document is not available in Firefox's cache. " As a security precaution, Firefox does not automatically re-request sensitive documents. " Click Try Again to re-request the document from the website." CTRL-U produces the same message. centos 7 will not install :(

Please ... any info on how to proceed??? After I made sure it had the correct sha256sum, and after I burned it to DVD, and and dd'd the DVD back to a temp file and again checked the sha256sum of the temp file, all was OK. Same sha256sum. So, I rebooted the machine and it booted up from the DVD. I got a message that it was not using VNC, Then after that immediately an error came out saying something about xbi...something not working. Machine did not proceed any further. I rebooted agian and agian, same error. The machine is a Dell Latitude E6500, Dual Core 2.8GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HD. Any info on this? On my phone, I have an image of the screen when the error is belched out. I have to yet be able to extract it out of the phone. Since I have no OS to run on my machine, I am using the live Knoppix, which has no sense to mount the storage of the android phone; so the I am unable to attach it, nor a way to upload it to a free upload site.

How to preserve the login session's running apps without hibernation

When I was running mate on another computer, I would log off or shutdown, and power up and login again and mate would restore all the gui apps in all the workspaces. Gnome does not do that. Also, I do not have a way to upgrade to Centos 7 because 1. graphic installation fails (as I have posted here before). 2. I do not want to do text install because it will clobber my existing partitioning scheme and does not provide for modifying the automatic partitioning scheme.

Hi All, smplayer has no mailing list. I tried to register at http://forum.smplayer.info/ucp.php?mode=register but the capchas are so incredibly impossible to discern that I gave up after 5 tries. I tried the audio option, but the audio option plays so garbled it is impossible to understand. My audio is great. I play youtube vids with great clarity. So I am hoping someone who is on that forum to inform the registration web page's designer to do something about this problem. Thanx to all who show some info on how to get this done.

NetworkManager / wireless on latest Centos7 installs

Hello All, on the latest installs I've done, on 2 different types of Latitude laptops, with 3 different wireless cars, of Centos7 and Mate desktop, it looks to me like NetworkManager is nog managing wireless. When clicking the nm icon in the top right corner, I'm not seeing access points. Wifi seems enabled [root@localhost ~]# nmcli g STATE CONNECTIVITY WIFI-HW WIFI WWAN-HW WWAN connected full enabled enabled enabled enabled but unmanaged [root@localhost ~]# nmcli d DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION enp0s25 ethernet connected enp0s25 lo loopback unmanaged -- wlp12s0 wifi unmanaged -- I always start from a minimal install. Then I install X Window packages, and Mate The only difference I can think of, is that I now installed from Centos7.1 minimal install media, and before from Centos7 DVD. Effectiveness of CentOS vm.swappiness

Hi all, This might not be CentOS related at all. Sorry about that. I have lots of C6 & C7 machines in use and all of them have the default swappiness of 60. The problem now is that a lot of those machines do swap although there is no memory pressure. I'm now thinking about lowering swappiness to 1. But I'd still like to find out why this happens. The only common thing between all those machines is that there are nightly backups done with Bacula. I once came across issues with the fs-cache bringing Linux to start paging out. Any hints, explanations and suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers, Shorty

My experience with RHEL and CentOS is quite limited, andwould classify me as novice. I have been running CentOS 6for a little over a year and recently brought up a CentOS 7system as a virtual machine under Windows 7. One of the first things I usually do after installation isedit the /etc/sudoers file using visudo to give a specificuser or specific users privileges as indicated in the fileexcerpt below. The visudo editor issued no error messageswhen creating the line for sarah. ## user MACHINE=COMMANDS ## ## The COMMANDS section may have other options added to it. ## ## Allow root to run any commands anywhere root ALL=(ALL) ALL sarah ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL On our CentOS 6 systems, the NOPASSWD option works as itis intended to work. No password prompt is presented for commands such as "sudo cat /etc/sudoers". On CentOS 7,the NOPASSWD option does not seem to work, and a promptfor sarah's password is always issued. Can someone help solve this CentOS 7 mystery? Thank you and best regards.

newbie question on installation over existing Linux

If I choose to do a fresh install of CentOS 6 with "replace existing Linux systems", will it also wipe out my /home directory? In the past when I've done this with another Linux distro, /home was not affected. Or, would I need to do "fresh" install and then muck with partitioning using a Custom Layout? Right now, it's kind of looking like the latter to me, and if so, will I lose data? I spent some time on the Forums and reading the RH documentation, but, no real answers to this specific question. Hello All, I have the problem described in this bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1116756 It is also descibed in some detail here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1264811 After printing, the print icon stays in the system tray until I logout. Why is sha256-generic preferred over sha256-ssse3?

The newly-released kernel v2.6.32-504.23.4.el6 includes the back-ported SHA256-SSSE3 driver. Why is the generic version of the SHA256 driver selected at runtime instead of the SSSE3 version on this x86_64 system? Yes, my CPU does support the SSSE3 instruction set, and the use of SHA256 is invoked by the LUKS "cipher=aes-cbc-essiv:sha256" option. On the running system I see that the sha256-ssse3 driver is not loaded. Further evidence that the generic driver is in use: # grep sha256 /proc/crypto name : sha256 driver : sha256-generic So... what's the trick to using the sha256-ssse3 driver instead of the generic driver? Resize KVM NTFS file system

Hey all, I resized a partition inside a KVM RAW file system disk image. When I start the Win7 virtual machine it does not report the new partition size. It shows the file system as 15GB instead of the 50GB size of the partition that it lives on. I gather from hours so reading the manual that I need to increase the NTFS file system size to fill the new larger partition where it lives. The ntfresize command does not seem to be compatible with disk image files. Do I have to mount the disk image file with a loopback first? I tried doing it inside the Win7 VM using the disk management tools but that didn't work either. How do I make my headset work. Before I try it with anything else, I'd like to make it work with arecord and aplay. VLC and movie player can make sounds with my external speakers. though not in my headset yet. I've got an insignia NS-PAH5101 headset. As directed, the red connector is in the pink spot and the green connector in green spot in the back of my computer. arecord folloed by aplay just gets me static. To the best of my knowledge, my singing is distinguishable from static. exclude directory from rsync

hey guys, I'm trying to do an rsync of the entire /var directory, but exclude just the /var/www directory. So far I've tried these approaches: rsync -avzp --exclude-from=/var/www /var/ /mnt/var/ rsync -avzp --exclude=/var/www /var/ /mnt/var/ But neither has worked. rpmforge vs epel

I've been informed that rpmforge and epel do not play well together and that if I use both, epel should have the higher (lower numbered) priority. Alas I had it the other way around. rpmforge messed up my effort to get audacity. I no longer need audacity, but would like to fix the situation before some other problem crops up. I found that it was easy to fix the C6 less to use the correct POSIX regex engine as follows: 1. Copy less-394-search.patch from the C7 SRPM, and add it back into less.spec as Patch2. 2. Remove the line "BuildRequires: pcre-devel". 3. Remove "--with-regex=pcre" from the %configure line in less.spec. 4. Change the release number. I changed 13 to 13posix, so that the resultant RPMS have names like less-436-13posix.el6 instead of less-436-13.el6 5. Rebuild RPMs and SRPM using "rpmbuild -ba less.spec". 6. Install using "yum localinstall". The resulting build of less works wonderfully on my C6 boxes, consistently with the versions on C4, C5 and C7. I'm sure there must be other people who would find the corrected RPMs useful, so my questions now are: a) Is there a contributors repo to which it would be appropriate to submit them? b) Is there a better way to number the release for this version?
