Both can be configured to check a port every X amount of time and report back.

Pipes (fifos) not working in concurrently

Hello I have a large list of URLs (from a database, generated automatically during tests) that I want to download using several wget processes at the same time. With our internal web servers, this will be a lot faster than downloading the pages one at a time with a single process. So I create 20 pipes in my script with `mkfifo´ and connect the read end of each one to a new wget process for that fifo. The write end of each pipe is then connected to my script, with shell commands like `exec 18>>fifo_file_name´ Then my script outputs, in a loop, one line with an URL to each of the pipes, in turn, and then starts over again with the first pipe until there are no more URLs from the database client. Much to my dismay I find that there is no concurrent / parallel download with the child `wget´ processes, and that for some strange reason only one wget process can download pages at a time, and after that process completes, another one can begin. My script does feed *all* the pipes with data, one line to each pipe in turn, and has all the pipes written and closed by the time the first child process has even finished downloading. Do you know why my child processes manifest this behavior of waiting in turn for each other in order to start reading the fifo and download ? I figure it must be something about the pipes, because if I use regular files instead (and reverse the order: first write the URLs, then start wget to read them) than the child processes run in parallel as expected. The child processes also run in parallel if I open the write end of the pipes first, and the start the wget processes for the read end. They even run in parallel with my pipes, but I could see them run like this only for once in all my attempts. I do not know what was special about that attempt, it happened at the beginning of the day, and the computers where not restarted nor logged off over night. The pipes are created and deleted on ever run, with mkfifo and rm. Is there something special about fifos to make them run in sequence if I open the read end first ? My script is attached here, I believe it is nicely formatted and clear enough. Thank you, Timothy Madden

Add new host to /etc/libvirt/qemu/networks/default.xml without virsh net-destroy?

Hi, When I setup a new KVM guest and add it's mac address to the default NAT'ted network, it would be nice to have that become active without having to destroy the network and recreate it - as that tends to make the other guests rather upset. Anybody knows how to achieve that? I've tried virsh net-edit but that doesn't seem to do anything useful :-( BR Bent

CentOS fileserver migrating to ZFS appliance

Hey folks, I've got a CentOS / RHEL (5.x) environment and am in the process of migrating the 5.3 file server over to an Oracle/Sun 7120 appliance. I want to keep my main 5.3 server as our NIS server but am moving NFS and Samba functions over to the appliance. NFS was a no brainer as one can imagine. Samba seems a bit trickier because of the authentication requirements in the ZFS server. They seem to want a domain controller which we don't have. I'm trying to update from the cr repo, but yum-plugin-fastestmirror gets it totally wrong; it selects a mirror in .hk that deliveres bytes per second, and as far as I can tell, most or all of the timedhosts.txt entries are in the Middle or Far East. What's going on? Now if I connect with any user without entering the shared folder (I get a netbios connection to port 139) I can enter to the shared folder of user A and B without entering their credentials. A netstat -an shows me a connection to port 139 and 445 per user. After a while (too I think) connections over ports 445 and 139 are automatically cuted and I have to authenticate again. How I can force always the request of login and password? Applications on different deskops at startup

Hi, I've just converted my laptop to Centos 6 from Fedora ( gnome 3 made the latest fedora unusable ) and I have one problem. I have several desktops with applications running on them, mainly terminals. At login all the terminals start on desktop 1. How do I get them to start on the desktop they were running on at logoff. That's how it worked on Fedora 13/14 so it must be popssible ;-) just can't find the magic. Thanks,, Tony

Not understanding the -B option is probably the least of its problems. :-) Until the RPM gets fixed, you can manually correct the bad symlink with: ln -sf /etc/alternatives/bacula-dbcheck /usr/sbin/dbcheck HTH T.

SSD diagnostics / test suite?

Hey folks, I looked back through the list archives and there are surprisingly few threads with "SSD" in the subject. In my new job I've been handed over a number of things that were outstanding with the previous Sys Admin, and one of them was an SSD that was suspect. I just plugged it into a diagnostics laptop to use the Linux Smart software to check it - and it all seems fine even after running the disk test suite from the GUI. In digging for more info I discovered that the errors were actually coming from the RAID controller - and the SSD has obviously been removed from there for the time being. While I have it in my hands I'd like to do some kind of complete test / diagnostics suite on it. Preferably Linux based since that's what we have here. I found a few windows-based tools with my googling. I did stumble upon this page which looks like it has a few useful tips for using SSDs on Linux http://danweinreb.org/blog/using-solid-state-disks-on-linux Now, what about comprehensive suites? Should I just run some IO suites on it like bonnie++ or something like that, and see what SMART says in the process? Problem with gdb or maybe gcc

I have CentOS 5.7. Before the last updates, when I ran gdb with a program name gave a breakpoint and then typed run it would stop on that breakpoint. Now it prints the message "Warning: no loadable sections in added symbol file." It then just runs the program without stopping. What could have changed? Are there some flags that need to be set when invoking gcc? Thanks, John -- John J. Corosync init-script broken on CentOS6

Hello all, I am trying to create a corosync/pacemaker cluster using CentOS 6.0. However, I'm having a great deal of difficulty doing so. Corosync has a valid configuration file and an authkey has been generated. When I run /etc/init.d/corosync I see that only corosync is started. >From experience working with corosync/pacemaker before, I know that this is not enough to have a functioning cluster. For some reason the base install (with or without updates) is not starting corosync dependencies. I've even tried using corosync/pacemaker for the EPEL 6 repo, and still the init-script will not start corosync dependencies. bind slave sync takes long

Hi, I do have two DNS servers running bind 9.7.3. One master, one slave. If I add/update a record on the master, it takes up to more or less 20 hours until that change is transferred to the slave. That is a long time for me :-) May be I got some settings wrong which would sync much faster ... ? What could be wrong? What might I check? Thanks for any suggestion and hint! Regards . I'd check the NS records first to make sure both master and slave are listed. Is this server providing external DNS behind a NAT? It could be that you are trying to to zone transfers over the external IP to 2 servers on the same external firewall. in this case, you can add the also-notify { internal ip of slave}; stanza to the named.conf to force it to notify the slave on updates. CentOS 6 x64 - Changing /var folder to raid 1 disk after install

Hello, I have fresh install CentOS 6 x64 running on my server. I have a raid 1 drive 3 tb ready to be mounted. I want to mount this as var folder, could achive this but after reboot, server didn't start, maybe i had problem with command cp -rf. Is this possible to do in a proper manner, with what commands? I used rsync and diff game me like 10+ output. Best regards

not using LVM for Linux VM guests?

I came across an old post comment yesterday (from http://echenh.blogspot.com/2010/04/how-to-extend-lvm-on-vmware-guest-os.html ) discussing the "hack" of LVM on Linux VM guests and whether it's better not to use it to simplify disk management. I've re-posted the comment below, does it sound reasonable? Is it better to not use LVM on Linux VM guests? --Russell ----------------------------------------------------------- At my job, after doing the same kind of procedure graph, we began to ask ourselves, why are using a LVM on a Linux VM guests? Since we're no longer living in the physical OS world, we didn't need to use the OS hacks(LVM) to overcome physical disk limitations anymore. We decided to Just let the hypervisor and virtual storage do that work for us. For example, in our production setup (3 tier commerce with VMs for database , webserver, and appserver), we're see a great improvement in managability and performance (>10%) by just dropping LVM, and most partitions. In your example, the resize process is 7 functional steps: 1. Increase size of VMDK 2. In VM OS, Create Partition (??) 3. REBOOT (!!) 4. PVCreate 5. VGExtend 6. LVExtend 7. Resize2fs Going to a LVM/partition-less setup reduces expansion to 3 steps and we don't need to take the VM OS offline! 1. Increase size of VMDK 2- Inside the VM, OS, rescan the scsi drive with:'echo 1 >/sys/class/scsi_device//rescan; dmesg' (dmesg will check that you drive isize has grown) 3- Resize2fs. Our current disk arrangement has 3 VM HD devices 0 - small device (100M) with a single BOOT partition 1 - entire device is / 2 - entire device is SWAP Doing this has simplified resizing so much, I now let the junior admins and my manager expand drive space as needed. It's also let's us really be spartan on space since expansion is so quick. Having less languages in Firefox (hunspell dictionaries provide too many locales)

Hello, on CentOS 6, I am routinely writing mails in English, German and French and using the related hunspell dictionaries for the spelling in Firefox (I'm using Google Apps). This works fine but the problem is that languages are added for all the possible locales (English US, UK, Philippines, Bostwana, Trinidad and Tobago, Denmark (sic!), ... and German Germany, Austria... and French France, Canada, Belgium...). So each time I want to switch from one language to the other (which sometimes happens every few minutes), I need to choose in a very long list (with non-deterministic ordering). First I thought it was no big deal, but with time I realize this is a loss of time and concentration which while not big is recurrent. Does anybody knows how I could reduce the list to English UK, German Germany and French France? (no offence to the other locales) An option would be to uninstall the hunspell dictionaries and install the dictionaries manually as Firefox addons, but I find it nice to have them provided by the base OS, and anyhow, I don't think that it is possible for English. serial console oddities with CentOS Linux release 6.0 (Final)

It seems as if /etc/inittab has undergone some changes. That doesn't seem to be related to my issues however. I am able to setup the grub.conf ( menu.lst if you like ) to use the serial console ttyS0 at 9600 baud and the usual bits. However I can not actually see the GRUB menu at boot time. I see nothing until the server begins to boot and then I can see everything. However the grub menu is absent entirely. Setting up a Virtual Machine

I have CentOS 5.7. How would I go about setting up a virtual machine so as to run another Linux distro on top of it? Specifically Scientific Linux or Vinux, a special distro for blind users. 2 network card setup

Dear all, I have a question regarding 2 network card setup, when e.g. using dhcp. Until a few months ago, I worked with OpenSuse. There in firewall config, you had to assign each NIC to a zone, either internal, external, DMZ or custom. Without it not much would work. I don't seen anything on CentOs in firewall config. build postfix spec w/ mysql

hello list! I am attempting to build an rpm of postfix that includes support for mysql. I've done this before with earlier versions on postfix but I am staring at this spec file until my eyes bleed and I just don't see why when I build the spec with rpmbuild mysql support isn't there. After I install the rpm I have a look at the modules as such: ldd $(which postfix) | grep -i mysql and nothing's there. high availability ideas

Hi, I'm looking for some recommendations. I need to have some sort of high availability for a set of php & mysql web sites, they must be hosted on 2 servers, in separate data centres and obviously on differrent IPs. I can't use a load balancer because that will introduce a single point of failure making the "distributed setup" useless. I was thinking some sort of drbd/glusterfs/mysql-master-master replication and figure out how to make the dns system responsible with the fail over. Am I going too far with this? Thanks.

These seems to me to be the first message in the series and provides a really good summary of the changes at Red Hat which seem to be making life a lot more difficult for CentOS. Just figured I'd pull it out of that thread and change the subject line. Below Johnny's email I've copied another from the original thread, written by Lamar Owen, which gives some good explanation on how Red Hat is able to get away with this. Basically from what I gather, while Red Hat cannot restrict access to sources, they can restrict access to binaries. And since CentOS has a goal of binary compatibility with upstream, they are essentially left trying to hit an unknown target. But (now I'm stretching my limited knowledge even further) Scientific does not have this restriction since they are less concerned about exact binary compat. The RHN AUP simply says that if you redistribute information from RHN you lose access to RHN. It does not restrict your right to redistribute anything; it restricts access to future information distributions from RHN. I know that's splitting hairs, but it does seem to meet the letter of the license. After all, RHN access is not required except for updates; if I really wanted to do so I could redistribute everything I have from RHN at this point in time and upstream has no legal recourse against that distribution that I know of (but I am neither a lawyer nor a paralegal; Russ on the other hand knows of what he speaks....). They can, however, choose to not distribute anything else to me in the future, and nothing in the GPL or any other license used by upstream forces them to distribute anything new to me. And that's the gestalt of the RHN AUP; it states under what conditions RHN will distribute the compiled binary code (treated specially by GPL and not as a derived work) to you, its customer. Once you have received the binary of a particular version you have the right, under GPL and only for GPL-covered packages, to receive the source code for that particular version of that package. Upstream is very gracious (in my opinion, at least) and distributes all of its source, not just GPL source and not just to customers but to the public at large (I say all; I haven't personally verified that all source in any given RHN channel is indeed available publicly on ftp.redhat.com, primarily because I don't have access to all channels). They could distribute only the source that they legally have to under those licenses that require it, but not for the source covered under other licenses that do not require redistribution of source plus modifications. But just because I have version 1.2.3 of a package does not give me a guaranteed right under GPL to get 1.2.4 from them. And just because I can get the source to the 1.2.4 package they distribute does not give me an automatic right to the corresponding binary as the GPL does treat the compiled code specially. If you get the binary, you have the right to the source; if you have the source it is assumed you can generate the binary yourself (as is proven by the various EL rebuilds). The level of difficulty required to generate the binary is not specified or even addressed by the GPL, nor does the GPL guarantee your ability to generate the exact same binary as someone else distributes..... nor is the distributor of the binary restricted at all in how difficult generating their exact binary, or a 100% compatible binary, can be. This seems to be the current holdup with C6.1, in my opinion; you can build *a* binary but will it work just like *the* binary? Upstream can make it even more difficult than they already have (and I know it's currently very frustrating to the CentOS team just from reading this thread!). Russ, is that summary even close to accurate in your opinion? These are the facts of life for an EL rebuild distribution user. If you want a primary access distribution (rather than a secondary rebuild) you need to find one that meets your needs, either by paying up for upstream or by going to something else (and there are really only two suitable enterprise choices for 'something else' in this case (and in my opinion): OpenSuSE or Debian Stable). I'm evaluating Debian Stable on IA64 myself, as Debian Stable is the only actively maintained enterprise-grade distribution (again, in my opinion) freely available for IA64 (yes, upstream's EL5 is still available and is still maintained, but it costs six arms and eight legs to purchase for the machines I have; SLES likewise). And I don't really currently have the time to rebuild C6 for IA64 myself. I'd love to, and I've had conversations with like-minded people, and I don't really want to go to Debian on it since I really want the IA64 boxes to work like all the other servers here which are running upstream EL rebuilds. Hi all, I have this network: 10.1.20.0 - 10.1.23.0 /22 Broadcast 10.1.23.255 Say I have a machine with IP: 192.168.1.1 Now, I want to create virtual IP on it with ip command: 1. Is this ok? ip addr add 10.1.22.100/22 dev eth0:1 2. Should I define the broadcast too in the above command? If I don't define it, will the above command means the broadcast would be 10.1.25.255? nfs4 problem in CENTOS6

Hi, This is slightly offtopic, but I have been trying to resolve that problem for two days now without much success. It looks like this may be something that works with CENTOS5, but not with CENTOS6! I have two machines, fileserver1 and server5. fileserver1 runs on CENTOS6 (virtualized, if this is important), server5 runs on Centos5. Both are running with the most recent updates. Server5 is a machine to store backups on. Several servers, including fileserver1, are mounted with nfs4 on server5. fileserver1 has this /etc/fstab: ---8<---/etc/fstab--- UUID=73254e19-895f-4190-b2e3-13a2b0bec9ce / ext4 defaults 1 1 UUID=ac658802-73e4-4c87-bb03-6f9af1ebc4f8 /mnt/data ext4 defaults 1 2 UUID=4836335a-2d66-4d12-9dec-7197dc772d77 swap swap defaults 0 0 tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /mnt /mnt dazukofs / /nfsexport/root none bind 0 0 /mnt/data /nfsexport/data none bind 0 0 ---8<--- AS you can see, /mnt/data is a partition mounted below /. On server5, I entered [root@server5 ~]# mount -t nfs4 192.168.1.202:/ /mnt/nfs/fileserver1/root successfully and [root@server5 ~]# mount -t nfs4 192.168.1.202:/mnt/data /mnt/nfs/fileserver1/data returns: mount: pinging: prog 100003 vers 4 prot tcp port 2049 and hangs. ctrl-c returns me to the prompt, but /mnt/data is not mounted. The active mount /mnt/nfs/fileserver/root is working nicely, but if I cd into /mnt/nfs/fileserver/root/mnt and enter ls there, the console hangs infinetly. As I wrote, server5 also mounts other servers filesystems without problems. All working systems are CENTOS5, the one not working is CENTOS6. Any idea? best regards --- Michael Schumacher

How can I create raid 1 - Centos 5.7 64 minimal installation

Hello, I have a server working on centos 5.7-64 minimal installation. I have 3 separate physical drives: 120 gb ssd, 2x 3tb disks for storage. My linux installation is on ssd disk, and I want to make raid 1 for these two 3tb disks and store data, like under /mnt/data. Can you please tell me the path how this is possible? CentOS 6 smb authentication?

I have some services on Centos5 boxes that use smb authentication against the Windows domain as a low-maintenance way to handle most of our office users for things that don't need home directories (web/file shares, etc.). Running authconfig is all it takes to add it to PAM, then adding mod_auth_pam to apache makes it work with that and local users. This all works without any particular involvement with the Windows group or administrative access there. Is there a better way to do this on C6 that does not involve 'joining' the windows domain? And is there a way to make samba (C5 or 6) work with Windows7 other than configuring every client to to send NTLM authentication when requested? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Difference in gnome between centos <> fedora

Hello, I've on my home PC CentOS 6 and Fedora 13 on different disks. When I log on the gnome enviroment at Fedora knows exactly which programm was started at which desktop (for example: thunderbird on desktop 1, firefox on desktop 2, nautilus on desktop 3, ..). The same procedure on Centos takes all programs on the first desktop, so I must arrange the programs on the right desktop. Question: why kows the gnome of Fedora al the postions and the gnome from CentOS doesn't? Is there a way to automaticly arrange the programs ? I have an ethernet device in my lan with a primary address 192.168.5.205 and a secondary address .217. Then I add a new route via a network gateway but I want the route to use the secondary address as a source. # ip route add 11.11.11.11 via 192.168.5.148 src 192.168.5.217 And the ip route show command shows that it knows the source. # ip route show 11.11.11.11 via 192.168.5.148 dev eth0 src 192.168.5.217 But where is the source address kept? If I look at /proc/net/route, it shows the route (0B0B0B0B = 11.11.11.11), but not the source address. # cat /proc/net/route Iface Destination Gateway Flags RefCnt Use Metric Mask MTU Window IRTT eth0 0B0B0B0B 9405A8C0 0007 0 0 0 FFFFFFFF 0 0 0 ... Hi, I'm trying to install RPM package Adobe Reader on Centos 6. lm_sensors on Sun (x86) Hardware

Hey folks, I'm running RHEL 5.3 on 6 boxes - and on every one of them sensors-detect finds nothing. 5 of them are Sun fire 2250 machines, and 1 is Sunfire 4170. Googling and searching this list does not seem to find anything. When I log into the Sun hardware management interface (web interface) I see that it of course is correctly detecting various temperatures of things. But for some reason Linux is not. Hey folks, I just went through the archives trying to find some info on this but did not come up with much other than it seems there are a few experts here on the list. I have no experience with clustering and have just taken over a Stem Cell Research Lab that has a Grid Engine cluster. I have not yet dug into the details of Grid Engine (only been here a week now) but am just trying to get up to speed on clustering in general. I was just looking at Red Hat's site and they have this HPC thing http://www.redhat.com/promo/mrg/ but damned if I can find any actual details on it there - that data sheet they link to is just a bunch of marketing gobble-de-gook as far as I can make sense of it anyway. Quick question : what are Red Hat using to do that, and can CentOS do the same thing? How hard is it to configure? How does it compare to Grid Engine? I have to say I'm a bit hesitant about Grid Engine because of the whole Oracle takeover. I just don't trust Oracle. Basically I'd like to get up to speed really quickly on different clustering technologies, and maybe even set up a CentOS (or Scientific) based cluster in a sandbox to play with.
