Radeon driver under CentOS-6

I wonder if anyone has CentOS-6 working on an HP MicroServer? I'm having a problem with the graphics driver for the Radeon HD 4200 graphics card. CentOS-5.6 is working fine on this machine; but at present I only have CentOS-6 running in text mode. I'm wondering if I could try the old radeon module, and if so how? Are there any documents that might help me determine the problem, and hopefully solve it? I don't see any errors listed in /var/log/messages, or in dmesg. CentOS 6 + XEN problem

Hi, Does anyone know what version of XEN works fine with CentOS 6? Migration Assistance

Good Afternoon, I have been tasked with migrating a machine sitting on RHEL 5.6 off a rackspace cloud server to a local machine. In order to cut costs we would like to utilize Centos 5.6. I have done quite a bit of research and have as of yet been able to find a clear answer on how to accomplish this. I have installed Centos 5.6 locally and am in a time crunch to complete this. I am hoping that someone can explain how to achieve this requirement. I did create a .tar file of the / partition of the RHEL remote server and rsync'd it locally. Hopefully I can just copy certain files from this .tar file to the new machine. Any and all assistance is tremendously appreciated. Best. Brian

to date, I've done all my administration on a manual 1 at a time basis, as each system has been pretty much unique. its looking like I might need to setup a deployment of a dozen or 2 basically identical machines, all running pretty much the same sorts of stuff. I have zero experience with the sorts of management tools folks use to automate this type of configuration, both initial setup, and ongoing management (system updates, user application updates, configuration changes, etc). anyone care to suggest any such tools, maybe some real-world pros and cons? of course, being centos, I prefer FOSS tools. for various reasons, this environment likely will NOT be virtualized (although I may emulate a test setup with vmware). -- john r pierce N 37, W 122 santa cruz ca mid-left coast

libxml for CentOS6?

Hello there, I'm struggling w/ my Canon Pixma iP1600 printer on a 64bit CentOS. I've installed all the necessary 32bit rpms to make use of the 32bit IP2200 driver found on Canon's side, but I'm missing libxml v1 (recompiling a src.rpm fails on at link against -lxml). I could not find a libxml package for CentOS6.. does anyone know a source where I could find it? It's not available from epel, atrpms, rpmforge, puias, remi. Regards, -- wwp

Fiel uploading framework

I need to setup something for a group of CAD guys to provide a web interface for clients/customers to send files to them. I was hoping to have an interface where the customer would be given a logon and it would email a link to the employee upon his successful upload. This would require an internal facing site to provision a slot to give to a customer. Anyone know of a project like this so I wouldn't have to manage any aspect of it? Thanks! jlc

Boot from that CD. It runs in RAM. After setting the screen size form an icon on the left side, run GPARTED which will give you a clearer understanding of your hard disk drive. I hope you have good backups, print the partition table and reload the OS in the box...check the logs maybe someone hack your box and changed things around. Centos 5.6 : Apache bug fix = PHP Exec no longer works

A few days ago I upgraded from the Centos 5 CR repository software including Apache. The Apache on my development server is: Apache/2.2.3 Aug 31 2011 20:18:21 httpd.x86_64 0:2.2.3-53.el5.centos.1 A previously working PHP Exec(...) command on a web page no longer works. After spending 7+ hours Googling, checking file and directory permissions, whether SELinux is on or off and doing numerous tests my once very nice routine will not work because the Shell processing by Apache seems to have altered. The consistent error message always includes: No such file or directory or command not found I have downgraded to httpd.x86_64 0:2.2.3-45.el5.centos.1 and restarted httpd but the problem persists. It appears to me, the PHP EXEC command is being executed in a 'black hole' with no access to the directory structure and that is why the weird error message occur. Helpful comments appreciated. Question on CR

I've been re-reading http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2011-August/017689.html I'm not clear as to when an update would go into the normal updates repository and when it'd go into the cr repository. Please don't take this the wrong way; I'm not attacking; I'm just trying to understand how this works. My best guess is that upstream is now 5.7 and bug fixes would be against 5.7, but since we're at 5.6 those fixes don't specifically apply, and so the cr is a temporary holding place for packages (and their dependencies) which would normally be in 5.7 but that need an earlier release (eg security). In this way cr is an attempt to provide timely security patches while the new release is still being prepared and validated. Is that correct? Are cr packages still validated as strictly as every other package? Are there any potential negative consequences of using cr? (Of course that posting - Aug 15th - hoped 5.7 would be out by 25th :-)) Thanks! -- rgds Stephen

Dear All Is there any reference link that lists the centos rpm packages by their description? As I know, we have reference sites like rpm.pbone.net and dag.wieers.com etc that we can search for an rpm package by its name. But what we have if we want to find a rpm package by its description rather than its name? Say we want to find how many solutions do we have for Image processing or Speech processing on centos, so if we know the solution is GIMP so we can search for its rpm package on the mentioned sites but what we can do if we just know the rpm package description? CentOS 6.0 and 3ware 9650SE series RAID Performance

Hello, Does anyone have experience using a 3ware 9650SE series raid controller on CentOS 6.0? I am getting very sporadic throughput with moderately sized files (0.5-2GB) on ext3. I have tried most of the mount time tuning options: * noatime * trying different journal types * setting commit=120 - helped a little Even after these optimizations it doesn't seem like the raid array is working as it should. After a few 1GB writes (dd from /dev/zero to the raid) kjournald runs for an hour and later writes are really slow. Not only that, using tw_cli is very slow ... whereas tw_cli is superfast if kjournald is not churning away. So it goes something like this * write one 1GB file (486 MB/s) * writes another (223 MB/s) * any writes before the 120s commit kicks in, is ~200MB/s * commit kicks in and kjournald starts churning * writes are all over the map - 6-85MB/s Maybe this is just the way it is, but it did not seem to be the case this same hardware was running Fedora (Core) 9 and I have a similar machine where this does not seem to be the case (I can't experiment on it at the moment). The one thing I do not know, since I did not create the RAID or ext3 filesystem is whether the stride and stripe-width were properly selected to match the 64k chunk size of the raid array. I don't know how to tell from tune2fs ... output below ... its either not there or by another name. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. how to install packages via yum using dvd as repo?

VMware tools 1.0.10 on Centos 6?

I have an instance of VMware server 1.0.10 hosted on CentOS 5, and it runs fine, with guests of CentOS 4, CentOS5 or Win2000. I have just created a new VM and installed CentOS6 on it, which also runs fine, except that I can't build the VMware tools on it. I get compilation errors when compiling the kernel modules, due to changes in the definition of struct net_device among other things. I saw a suggestion to use open-vm-tools, but looking at the RPMs on the Lucid site, it only talks about versions for ESX. I could try compiling from source, but I wanted to check first whether anyone here has succeeded in installing VMware tools on CentOS 6 for VMware Server. New wireless controller

I just installed an Asus PCE-n13 wireless card into one of my CentOS 5.6 systems. It uses the RaLink 2680 chip set and I was able to get the driver loaded using modprobe rt2x00pci.ko. I saw no error and now see that the module is loaded along with mac80211 and other dependencies. Now I need to know how to create the wlan0 device. I can find nothing via Google searches on how to create that device. I assumed the driver would do that upon loading, but now I expect some ioctl to the driver command may be required. I created an ifcfg-wlan0 file, but of course ifup wlan0 always returns device not found. Can somebody tell me where to start on getting the wlan0 device created? Emmett

Now I know there are a lot of different ways to partition the system and different opinions depending on the use of the server. I currently have a quad core intel system running 8GB of RAM with 1 TB hard drive (single). In the past as a FreeBSD user, I have always made a physical volume of the root filesystem (/), SWAP, /tmp, /usr, /var, and /home. In the partitioning manager I would always specify 10GB for root, 2GB or so for SWAP, 20GB var, 50GB usr, 10GB /tmp, and allocate all remaining space to my home directory as my primary data volume (assuming all my applications are installed and ran from my home directories). I was recently told that this is an old style of partitioning and is not used in modern day Linux distributions. So more accurately, here are my questions to the list: 1) What is a good partition map/schema for a server OS where it's primary purpose is for a LAMP server, DNS (bind), and possibly gameservers 2) CentOS docs recommend using 10GB SWAP for 8GB of RAM. 1X the amount of physical memory + 2GB added. (Reference: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Installation_Guide-en-US/s1-diskpartition…) I was told this is ridiculous and will severely slow down the system. Is this true? If so, what is a good swap space to use for 8GB of RAM? The university of MIT recommends making MULTIPLE 2GB swap spaces equaling 10GB if this is the case. So more accurately, here are my questions to the list: 1) What is a good partition map/schema for a server OS where it's primary purpose is for a LAMP server, DNS (bind), and possibly gameservers 2) CentOS docs recommend using 10GB SWAP for 8GB of RAM. 1X the amount of physical memory + 2GB added. (Reference: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Installation_Guide-en-US/s1-diskpartition…) I was told this is ridiculous and will severely slow down the system. Is this true? If so, what is a good swap space to use for 8GB of RAM? The university of MIT recommends making MULTIPLE 2GB swap spaces equaling 10GB if this is the case. Update to CentOS 6.0 without CD/DVD reader

I've had a disaster on my home network server; the partition table on the disk containing / has become corrupted, and testdisk has not enabled me to recover the table. If anyone can help with this I should be grateful. However, that is not what I am writing about. I've installed a substitute box - and HP MicroServer - which by a miracle has CentOS-5.6 installed on it. Now I'm wondering what is the best way to install CentOS-6, given that there is no CD/DVD driver on this machine. I have access to the internet, so I can download the CD/DVD . I know I could install through a USB stick; I'm just wondering if there is a more direct route. First, I realize this might not be the right group. Please feel free to redirect me :-) I recently upgraded from CentOS 5.6 to 6.0. Since the upgrade, Xvfb will, on occasion, "just stop" (ie the process disappears from the system, as opposed to still being there but not working). I can't find any tracks anywhere that it might have left behind that might be clues as to why it stopped. There's nothing in /var/log that looks promising (nothing in messages or Xorg.0.log). Any other clues about where to look or command line options I should add? Thanks in advance, Bruce

Managing permissions for web folders

We have a web folder /var/www/somesite that's a root for one of the sites. Apache serves files out of here. It is an svn checkout, so that updates could be done by using svn up. Everything has been going great when I use the root user to update, but now I need to give access to other people to make deployments, and it doesn't seem to be easy to do using regular users. I have created a group called staff and added the new user to it, lets say user1. I ran the following commands to set the permissions find . -type d -exec chmod 2775 \{} \; find . -not -type d -exec chmod 0664 \{} \; chown user1.staff . This allows the user to make deployments. Now comes in user2. User2 is also a member of group staff, so he can also make deployments. We haven't ran into any issues yet, but I believe as long as the files are owned by staff, both users can change the files, no matter which one of them owns it. Now we also need to give apache write access to a folder. Lets say /var/www/somesite/files. There are several options here. - We can add apache to the staff group, but this would give apache access to the whole /var/www/somesite tree. - We can change the group to apache. We will need to add user1 and user2 to the apache group. One of the problems with this is that the users would have access to everything that apache has access to. Another problem is that while user1 can run chmod -R user1.apache files, it will fail if the files are owned by someone else (like user2 or apache). Is there a way to get around this? Am I going about this the wrong way? Russ

Hello all, I am interested in personally hosting a mirror for CentOS 5 and 6 (not at home, but in a DC, with the future of going colo whe I have the monetary funds to do so). Would anyone have any recommendations on this and whether or not I should set the cron to use the rsync command or have the rsync command in a batch file and tell cron to execute the batch job. I am thinking the second option, simply out of convenience. Unless anyone can see an issue with this. Now, I realize that some mails go out from noreply, but other than that, is there a good reason why a mailserver would not be configured to send delivery failure to *both* Reply-To and From? mark

Centos 6, KDE 4: canot manage network

In KDE 4, I click: Kickoff > System Settings > Network & Connectivity > Network Settings > Network Settings I get a popup informing me that my system is not supported. (This did not happen before.) I am offered choices. I choose RedHat 6.0 (Is this wrong? I also tried RedHat 9.0.). I select Network Interfaces. I see nothing on the list *** even though I am presently running eth0 and can successfully ping google.com through it.***. Now I set that interface using a GUI just a few days ago. Just wondering how to run 2 versions of Apache on the same server, listening on different IPs and both on port 80. Does one give them, the httpd, different names and effectively duplicate most of the Apache set-up ? I use Apache;s virtual hosts facility for normal purposes but this is for a different project. Cannot start SSH at boot

Maybe I missed something, but it appears that the CR repository is not compatible with yum priorities & possibly repository protection. I had priority=1 set on [base] and [updates] and no updates appeared. However, when I removed priority updates from cr became visible. Is this expected? CentOS 6, KDE 4: bad DNS traffic

On my new CentOS 6, KDE 4, running WireShark I see what appears to be frequent nonsensical DNS queries, for example: "settings-personal.desktop" and "settings-system.desktop". The DNS response is always:"No such name". Do tell! These appear especially when I click on things on the KDE menus. On my old CentOS 5 box, on the same LAN, I see no such thing. I note that I have replaced the original /etc/hosts with my own. Might these have been resolved in the original? Thanks for your comments. Mike.

[0] [1] It builds flawless on several machines I tried (Scientific Linux 6, CentOS 5 and 6). Question is: Should one deploy a self-build RPM or will there be an update in the next... "time"? (Given that 5.7 is still to be done, 6.1, etc., and due to the fact there is "no such thing as a CentOS community", as was discussed end of 2010/early 2011. Error installing latest CentOS kernel from %post section of kickstart

I'm running the command "yum -y update" from a script called from the the post section of my kickstart config file, and I get the following error: Installing : kernel-2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.i686 185/378 grubby fatal error: unable to find a suitable template After the install, if I log in to the system and remove that RPM and then re-install it with "yum install kernel", the grub.conf file is updated correctly. Any ideas why this might be failing from kickstart? Anyone else seen this? Alfred

Centos VPS Kernel 2.6.35.4 & 'string-less' IP tables

On a VPS I wanted to add to IP tables:- iptables -A XXXX -p tcp -m string --algo bm --string 'login' -j DROP I got: iptables: Unknown error 18446744073709551615 uname -a = 2.6.35.4 #2 (don't know how this got installed) lsmod | grep ipt = ipt_LOG 5419 2 yum upgrade iptables* = nothing to install. --------------------------------------- On a standalone server (C 5.6) iptables -A XXXX -p tcp -m string --algo bm --string 'login' -j DROP is accepted. uname -a = 2.6.18-274.el5 #1 lsmod | grep ipt = ipt_LOG 39617 1 iptable_filter 36161 1 ip_tables 55457 1 iptable_filter x_tables 50505 6 xt_string,xt_state,ipt_LOG,xt_tcpudp,ip_tables,ip6_tables ------------------------------------------------ Appreciate suggestions on how to get kernel 2.6.35.4 to install the whole IP tables package, especially the STRING and RECENT options (in -m). Help integrating CentOS 6 with existing network login infrastructure

I've updated my kickstart configuration files to work with CentOS 6 and am most of the way there integrating a CentOS 6 system into our LDAP/NIS environment. My authconfig line in the kickstart file is as follows: authconfig --enablemd5 --passalgo=sha512 --enablenis --nisdomain=XXX --nisserver=nis.XXX.com --useshadow --enablekrb5 --krb5realm=XXX.COM --krb5kdc=ldap.XXX.com --krb5adminserver=ldap.XXX.com This is virtually identical to the authconfig line I was using in CentOS 5. My issue is that users cannot log in with their network (NIS) usernames and passwords. If I log in as root, I can do a "su - username" and get the user's automounted home directory with the correct uid/gid, but if I try to log in as the user, or do a "su - username" as a non-root user and have to enter the password, authentication always fails. The entries in /var/log/secure just say "su: pam_unix(su-l:auth): authentication failure". I'm not a pam expert and don't know how to debug this. Anyone else run into this and/or know what might be the problem? This works just fine in CentOS 5. Alfred

Question re: CentOS-6.0, KVM, and /dev/sr0

I am experimenting with KVM and I wish to create a virtual machine image in a logical volume. I did a manual disc configuration on initial install but I do not recall specifically dealing with /dev/sr0 at any point. Can anyone explain to me what is happening here and what I should do? Am I constrained to reboot the server each time that I make changes to an LV? Is there some configuration change I need make to the base system? (Centos 5.6) Server Time NTP Facility

Curiously examining some of the blocked IP addresses in the daily Logwatch report, I notice strange sites attempting to connect to our servers on port 123 (the time port). I also notice our servers successfully contacting official time references centres which are not those sites trying to connect to us. I notice too the installed time software is listening on every available IP. I can not identity any options in any configuration files to turn-off this listening. Why are unknown sites attempting to connect to our server to, I assume, sample the time and how does one turn-off the software's listening on every IP address, including 127.0.0.1 ? Thanks, Paul.
