Centos convert to rhel?

Hate to ask, but after reading the last few months of centos history online I am worried. And to learn the lead guy seems to have absconded with the cash and left all the hard working devs high and dry..well that is scary. They all worked so hard and who knows what will happen now. If centos falls I have no choice but to go to redhat. I am wondering if the conversion will be easy or a complete reinstall. I ponder the worries I think we are all faced with here. I think all of us would follow a fork... Whatever they end up calling it. But I am worried about the immediate future for the project. None of those guys deserve what is happening to them and all of us are affected. If anyone lives near Lance, perhaps a good call to the local news station and some you tube stuff may get him to release the project to the team who wants to continue. But an option to go full redhat is one I am now considering.. Discuss?

Since 2004 or so, I have donated each year to the CentOS project, at the requested rate, for each of our servers. While I never really gave the matter any thought (fool that I am) I presumed that any organisation that solicited funds would, at a minimum, be incorporated, have a board of directors, duly appointed officers and hold all corporate identity elements such as internet domain names, brand trademarks and such as corporate property. Evidently, my beliefs in this matter were sadly unfounded. Now, I appreciate that whilst somewhat embarrassing, the immediate matter is easily resolved, turning as it does on retention or depreciation of the centos.org domain. Presumably those who donated bandwidth and servers to the CentOS.old project will in the main continue to support the CentOS.new project. Equally, unless some injury that has not yet come to light has been done to them, it seems likely that most of the current maintainers will move their loyalties and future technical contributions to CentOS.new. However, having been bitten once, I feel that I must ask this more formal question. What steps, if any, have been taken to establish the CentOS project as a separate legal entity distinct from any individual contributor? What protections are being put in place to prevent future misappropriations of donations and advertising revenue, even if it turns out that no such thing has as yet happened? Sincerely,

how to disable scim

Hello: I keep getting these An IOException occurred at scim_bridge_client_imcontext_set_cursor_location () messages -- and I'd like to turn them off. I won't mind having scim just plain turned off. However, in using Google, I find a hint such as "right click on the tray, ..." -- so where's the tray? A second part of that hint suggested using System:Administration:Language Support -- there's a "Language" (which allows me to select my default language) but nothing about scim. Upgrade fm 4.7 to 5.3: mptscsi module?

First issue: I did an upgrade from 4.7 to 5.3 on an HP DL380G3 box. I got yum working again and upgraded 160+ packages. LDAP howto using ds-base and ds-admin and related consoles

Hi, I have previously used openLDAP and read many of their howto documents for establishing an LDAP server. RH and CentOS provide <brand>-ds-base and related rpms and I like what I see and read about the product. I found the wiki article on installing the rpms and getting it running on a server - so far so good. Then I fall into a big hole. What are the key items that need to be put in place to actually make it useful for my domain? Is there a document somewhere for those of us that want to bridge from openLDAP to the RH based product? I have read many hundreds of pages, have purchased O'reilly's LDAP System Administration but cannot seem to get my dirsrv based LDAP to function. I do understand that ds uses LDIF files to store and set things up, but seem unable to grasp the arcane entries that need to exist so I can access it with a basic LDAP client to load my users etc. Also I guess there are certain schemas that need to be used to allow basic functions to work. My wish list: linux user authentication and authorization windows user authentication and authorization (via samba?) customer contact list (name, address, company, phone numbers, email addresses) - this last one to be used by Thunderbird and my SIP phone system - both of which profess to speak LDAP I'm sure there are many small business folk that would like something like this, however I cannot find a template with all my searches, so for those of you with better LDAP and or google skills - please point me in the right direction. files not showing up in an nfs mounted filesysetm in timely manner

We have and nfs mount from a windows pc nfs server. A file is created on the server, but can take as long as 50 seconds to become available on the client. We are running Centos 5.2 (final), using NFS version 3. Is there anything we can do from the client side to see the file more quickly. X Crashing on 64 Bit CentOS

Hi People, I have a user who is regularly having X Crash. This seemed to happen once a month but has increased to once or twice a week. It doesn't seem to be application specific. The only information about whats causing the crash is from the X log. But this doesn't really give much to go on. ssh -X not shutting down

Occasionally I ssh into my server to check something, and if it needs the gui I use 'ssh -X'. Until recently there was no problem. Exiting simply dropped me back to my local konsole. Worried, ran yum -y update expecting to get the bind update but am concerned as to why the following instant messaging packages were installed as dependencies. All of the following are instant messaging related except cyrus-sasl. Are there any more details, mainly along the lines of CentOS sticking around - I know you folks all work really hard on this, and you know better than me how many others depend on you - but - there's that little specter of doubt yelling in my virtual ears (has to yell 'cuz it's really tiny) and I'd like nothing better (well, almost) than to gag it. sendmail slow to response

Dear All, I am sorry for the post here but really apprecite if someone could help me or advise. actually i just could not subscribe to sendmail mailing list I have the following setup for a long time on a single computer Centos server running as my primary Mail & Dns server CentOS release 5 (Final) sendmail-8.13.8-2.el5 bind-9.3.4-6.0.3.P1.el5_2 MailScanner (4.76.25) Mailwatch 1.0.4 I had also running Squirrel mail on the same computer ver 1.1.17 which had been upgraded as per new releases all this had been workin grt until recently some users complined that MSOutlook or Outlook expreess is very slow (a simple text mail remains 2 to 3 minutes in outbox) and then sent actually abt 80 % users use squirrel mail and there is absolutley no problem after i started to check this problem i finally concluded that a telnet the server ip:25 from a client took a long time for sendmail to respond. the client is on local lan after loggin into the server itself a telnet to the server ip on port 25 was just instant also netstat -nl shows me tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:25 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN i have not changed any settings in sendmail.mc file or regenrated the sendmail.cf file just wondering what could have gone wrong would really apprecite your help and advice as to wht i could do to troubleshoot this rpoblem Regards simon -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Let's try this again :) I am running CentOS 5 (core pkgs) / x86_64 using grub 0.97 and I am trying to configure a fallback between two partitions on my local disk, each installed with a CentOS image. The idea is to be able to install a new test OS image and fall back in case of a problem to the default image. This is a great grub feature ! Except it does not work for me :( grub.conf: #----------------------------------------------- default saved timeout=5 fallback 1 title NEW OS root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-new root=/dev/sda1 panic=5 initrd /boot/initrd-new.img savedefault fallback title DEFAULT OS root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-default root=/dev/sda2 initrd /boot/initrd-default.img savedefault #----------------------------------------------- Grub is installed on /dev/sda1, but not on /dev/sda2. /dev/sda1 is the primary boot partition. Both partitions are formatted with ext3. The problem is that the fallback does not work for me. For instance, if I specify on purpose a wrong root device with the NEW OS, e.g. root=/dev/sda3, then the kernel panics and reboots properly after 5 sec. However, grub then attempts to boot the NEW OS all over again. The same is true when I fully boot NEW OS with the right root device and then panic the kernel on purpose. Now, I have read somewhere that grub requires a default file to get the savedefault feature working. However, I could neither find the 'savedefault' command nor the grub default file under /boot/grub or anywhere else. One more thing, when I choose the boot title manually then grub seems to remember my last choice. In other words, grub is preserving my last choice from a previous boot. Am I doing something wrong ? Do I need to install something in addition to grub 0.97 ? LSI MegaRAID system status

Dear list, I have inherited a CentOS-5 box with a LSI Sata Raid controller. It is configured as a RAID5 w/hot-standby. My concern is that I have no present means of determining the RAID status w/o downing the system and going into the bios to get status. If a disk has failed and brought the standby disk online, I would like to know about it, the day it happens by seeing it in syslog or getting an e-mail message. The only solution I have found is on the LSI web-site. It is tool called "MegaMon for Linux". It most recent release was in 2005 and it requires that I use their driver. Just the package title gives me chills. It runs as a daemon and is almost constantly polling the h/w . I would much prefer a simple command line tool that I can wrap a script around and run it under cron. My questions are: 1. Does anyone know of a command line tool ? 2. Color Coded Labels (Like OSX)

Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to do something similar to Mac OSX color label, where you can highlight a file or group of files and assign them a color, making different files more obvious. For example, my files which are finished with are colored green and those which haven't been worked on are red, etc. This means, even with files of the same type, I can clearly see which ones need work doing to them. I'm not expecting you to do it or even explicitly explain how it would be done, just a pointer to the right files and any quick thoughts you might have about implementing a system like this will do!

DRBD very slow....

Hello all, we have a new setup with xen on centos5.3 I run drbd from lvm volumes to mirror data between the two servers. both servers are 1U nec rack mounts with 8GB RAM, 2x mirrored 1TB seagate satas. The one is a dual core xeon, and the other a quad-core xeon. I have a gigabit crossover link between the two with an MTU of 9000 on each end. I currently have 6 drbds mirroring across that link. The highest speed I can get through that link with drbd is 11 MB/sec (megabytes) But if I copy a 1 gig file over that link I get 110 MB/sec. Why is DRBD so slow? I am not using drbd encryption because of the back to back link. Hi Guy, I'm curious if you found a solution to the headless automount problem on centos? I'm running into a similar problem, though I am not using VNC. My machine is simply headless, with only network and power supplied, and I'm trying to trigger a bash script to run when a new device is added (like USB, DVD, CDROM, etc) using a custom udev rule. Automount seems to only work for removable devices if a user is logged in locally on the console, not via ssh. Something about the tty nature of the login seems to be affecting how udev handles these removable devices. When a user is logged in locally, it fires the udev rules, and will run my udev rule which triggers other actions. I can't get this to work without the local login though. any ideas or pointers? thanks, Jason

hi, Whats the 'robust' way to make sure email to a specific destination is only accepted if it came over the localhost:25 or /usr/sbin/sendmail route ? anything else should get a 5xx error. DRBD on a xen host: crash on high I/O

Hello, I have a couple of Dell 2950 III, both of them with CentOS 5.3, Xen, drbd 8.2 and cluster suite. Hardware: 32DB RAM, RAID 5 with 6 SAS disks (one hot spare) on a PERC/6 controller. I configured DRBD to use the main network interfaces (bnx2 driver), with bonding and crossover cables to have a direct link. The normal network traffic uses two different network cards. There are two DRBD resources for a total of a little less than 1TB. When the two hosts are in sync, if I activate more than a few (six or seven) xen guests, the master server crashes spectacularly and reboots. I've seen a kernel dump over the serial console, but the machine restarts immediately so I didn't write it down. Unfortunately I cannot experiment because I have production services on those machines (and they are working fine until I start drbd on the slave). drbd configuration is attached. Anybody has an idea of the problem? The crash is perfectly reproducible, and drbd seems to be the problem (maybe the Xen kernel helps?). Now, according to the news clipping from computerworld.com, by installing this, one would still use the proprietary Broadcom firmware, which, I suppose, comes along with the driver released by Broadcom at: http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php Also, according to the Broadcom's README, all other "firmware kernel modules" have to be removed (or blacklisted) from kernel before installing this. A few questions for start: Ok, to build an rpm I need a spec file - this comes as a condition for packaging anything as RPM, right? Now, the only way to do everything else (i.e. blacklisting unwanted firmware files, importing kernel module, assigning modules to the devices ...) that I can think of, is via Bash script, or not?

Cleaning up some problems

Over the past year or so, I've collected several errors that some I have found the solution for, others, like the one below are quite befuddling. I get this one every week when /etc/cron.weekly runs. What the heck is the "S" or what it is looking for? Also, I've checked with cpan, and according to cpan, it says it doesn't know what NET::DNS is, yet if I do an i NET::DNS, it returns 150-some odd net::dns entries. I'm not totally familiar with cpan, and just started using it a short time ago. Still the man3/s is really screwey for some reason. There's not a package called "s" n the repositories is there? This is an x86_64 box updated as of yesterday after removing the httpd.1 stuff someone told me was the fix. Thanks again all.. Sam

install cups-devel error on CENTOS 5.3

I have CENTOS 5.2 on DELL server. I tried to install new HP3530fs MFP driver which I download from HP. It ask me install two dependency "cup-devel". while I try to install "cups-devel" from DVD and got error: # rpm -ivh cups-devel-1.3.7-8.el5.i386.rpm error: Failed dependencies: cups-libs = 1:1.3.7-8.el5 is needed by cups-devel-1.3.7-8.el5.i386 [root@MCG-ORA11 tmp]# rpm -qa|grep cups-lib cups-libs-1.3.7-8.el5_3.4 cups-libs-1.3.7-8.el5_3.4 the reason may come from "cups-libs" newer than "cups-devel". Anywhere I can download new version of "cups-devel"? Installing matlab on Centos5. command I typed: /media/MATHWORKS_R2009A/install & Error message I received: [1] 10759 [root@taro matlab]# bash: /media/MATHWORKS_R2009A/install: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Permission denied Google found no hits with this precise error message, but several similar hits when I leave out the matlab path. Solution: mount -o remount -o exec /dev/scd0 (scd0 is the drive where the DVD is inserted.) Hope this helps someone with the same problem.
