Hi, I'm trying to rebuild the kernel specifically on Centos7 from src.rpm but some packages are missing or too old. I managed to get them and compile on Centos8 though. kickstart storage configuration hangs

While playing with some CS9 kickstart installation attempts (manually/graphical works) I noticed following: What ever I provide as ks file "anaconda" outputs (text mode): <snip> Saving storage configuration ... Checking storage configuration ... . . .......................................................... <filling multiple lines> The ks file has nothing special, the storage related lines are: ignoredisk --only-use=nvme0n1 zerombr clearpart --all --initlabel --drives=nvme0n1 and then the part/volgroup/logvol lines. Does someone have the same issue? I guess anaconda is not ready? Because even the ks file from the manually installed system does not work ... -- Leon

Two labels, one mount point

I have a systemd mount unit that mounts an external drive by label. What happens if I plug in two USB external drives formatted with the same label? Does the last one discovered mount on top? I'm rotating backup drives and the backup software assumes the drive to be at a particular directory. Normally I'd stop the service, umount the drive (via systemd stop), unplug, plug the other one in, then start the service. (An automount unit will mount the replacement drive when the service touches the mount point.) But I'm wondering what happens if someone isn't careful and plugs in the 2nd drive before shutting down the service and removing the first one.

SELinux relabeling for a diffeerernt mount point

I'm preparing a disk mounted at /mnt/tmp to later be mounted at /var/lib/BackupPC. Is there some magic invocation to get the selinux labels for the structure I create to assume the final mount point, so that I don't have to relabel it when it's finally mounted at its target location? Or is there an argument to restorecon that will do the equivalent of chroot so that restorecon assumes the final location?

Updating a package to one from a different repository

At some point I updated fail2ban from a copr repo to get the latest release. That repo no longer exists but a newer version is available in EPEL. Is there a direct way to get yum to update using the different repo? Or do I need to save my config and DB, erase the old version, and install the new one from EPEL?

Cron and GNU parallel

I am using parallel-20190922-1 from epel and when I run a job in cron such as /usr/bin/parallel /usr/bin/bash ::: a.sh b.sh c.sh I don't receive any mail regardless of all three scripts generating output. All other jobs in cron generate mail if they write to stdout or stderr. When the above is run at a terminal, I get the output from all three jobs grouped in the order they complete. I can't find any documentation for parallel that states the behavior when not running with a terminal. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, jlc

TCP Sequence Number Approximation Based Denial of Service on CentOS Linux release 7.9.2009 (Core)

Hi, I have 3.10.0-1160.59.1.el7.x86_64 on CentOS Linux release 7.9.2009 (Core) running Nagios Monitoring system. We have run an external vulnerability scan today on this server. The vulnerability reports say the below details. I am not sure if I completely understand the below issue. CVSS base score:- 5.0 CVE-2004-0230 Severity : Medium TCP Sequence Number Approximation Based Denial of Service TCP provides stateful communications between hosts on a network. TCP sessions are established by a three-way handshake and use random 32-bit sequence and acknowledgement numbers to ensure the validity of traffic. A vulnerability was reported that may permit TCP sequence numbers to be more easily approximated by remote attackers. This issue affects products released by multiple vendors. The cause of the vulnerability is that affected implementations will accept TCP sequence numbers within a certain range, known as the acknowledgement range, of the expected sequence number for a packet in the session. This is determined by the TCP window size, which is negotiated during the three-way handshake for the session. Larger TCP window sizes may be set to allow for more throughput, but the larger the TCP window size, the more probable it is to guess a TCP sequence number that falls within an acceptable range. It was initially thought that guessing an acceptable sequence number was relatively difficult for most implementations given random distribution, making this type of attack impractical. However, some implementations may make it easier to successfully approximate an acceptable TCP sequence number, making these attacks possible with a number of protocols and implementations. This is further compounded by the fact that some implementations may support the use of the TCP Window Scale Option, as described in RFC 1323, to extend the TCP window size to a maximum value of 1 billion. This vulnerability will permit a remote attacker to inject a SYN or RST packet into the session, causing it to be reset and effectively allowing for denial of service attacks. An attacker would exploit this issue by sending a packet to a receiving implementation with an approximated sequence number and a forged source IP address and TCP port. There are a few factors that may present viable target implementations, such as those which depend on long-lived TCP connections, those that have known or easily guessed IP address endpoints and those implementations with easily guessed TCP source ports. It has been noted that Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is reported to be particularly vulnerable to this type of attack, due to the use of long-lived TCP sessions and the possibility that some implementations may use the TCP Window Scale Option. As a result, this issue is likely to affect a number of routing platforms. Another factor to consider is the relative difficulty of injecting packets into TCP sessions, as a number of receiving implementations will reassemble packets in order, dropping any duplicates. This may make some implementations more resistant to attacks than others. It should be noted that while a number of vendors have confirmed this issue in various products, investigations are ongoing and it is likely that many other vendors and products will turn out to be vulnerable as the issue is investigated further. If that port number is known to be used for port-forwarding, then it is the backend host that is really vulnerable. I'd like to echo this. `kscreenlocker_greet` doesn't show a password prompt and can't be unlocked, `loginctl unlock-session` just doesn't work, sddm just stops at a black screen and never displays the login prompt. Backed up to 348 and everything works fine. Turing Eret

ceph beginner, how to initialize a new node on a blank system?

Hallo, first steps in the ceph world. My question: Is there a way to initialise an empty system to be fully configured and active in a ceph cluster. My idea: Booting an empty system using an iso and everything is working some minutes later. DNS server app for Centos8

I have been running my DNS server on a Centos7-arm board for some years and it is past time I get up to date. Particularly get DNSSEC working. So I have plenty of cubieboards for running Centos8-arm, but I want to no longer hand configure. I want some help here; getting up in years and all that. I know there is the Webmin tool, but don't know if it supports dnssec. Looking for that in what docs I have found so far. But is there some other tool for this? I would start to import my zone files and then go from there. thanks

KVM virsh console to physical console?

I'm preparing to virtualize a Windows server onto a Linux system under virsh. Initial results are looking good, but an issue that's come up is the need to log into the Linux system prior to being able to access the Windows system for updates. Is there a way to "connect" the virsh console directly to a physical Linux terminal? EG: Ctl+Alt+F8 to access the Windows virsh console for Windows Server Thank you Ben Smith

CentOS Stream 8 dnf fails

Every time I run dnf, I get this: ========= [root@vmhost2 ~]# dnf upgrade CentOS Linux 8 - AppStream 70 B/s | 38 B 00:00 Error: Failed to download metadata for repo 'appstream': Cannot prepare internal mirrorlist: No URLs in mirrorlist ========= I tried disabling the repository, but that only gives me exactly the same error for the baseos repository. I doubt it is a problem in the .repo files. Something else is going on. Ping to mirrorlist.centos.org works on both ipv4 and ipv6, so I know that both name resolution and network connectivity are working. Thanks! ======== Bill Gee

stream 8 or stream 9 for new server

I'm replacing my ancient desktop home server (CentOS 7, email, dns, backup) with a new mini-server. I've been running stream 9 on the new toy for a couple of weeks and I find there are still a lot of incomplete or missing things. Enough to delay full implementation. Unless I do some workarounds or compile from source. On the other hand I've read there will be no migration path from stream 8 to stream 9. It will require a complete reinstall. Any guesses as to when the stream 9 repos (including epel) will be fairly complete? Just trying to decide whether to wait a bit or go with stream 8. Jon -- Jon H. LaBadie jcu(a)labadie.us

CentOS Plus 8-stream support?

Are the centos-plus packages for 8-stream no longer supported? I noticed that all of the repositories have removed the packages, but I have not heard any announcement that said they were going away. Does that include CentOS Plus for 8-Stream? I really just need CentOS Plus for the kernel-plus package for Wireguard support. The alternative would be to build it into kernel after each release myself, but that isn’t easily maintainable with multiple servers. Let me know if anyone has any insights. Thanks, Dan West

sdl not useable / are there any limits number of harddisks?

Hallo, I ve a system with disks sda to sdk runing as a nexus repo for docker an d kubernetes. Every repo-type has an own disk Everything is working fine. The problem: A new disk sdl can t be uses. fdisk doesn t recocnize the disk. Same problem using parted. The hardware (a vm) is ok because a) booting gparted from a iso gives me full acches b) while booting sdl is shown Centos 7 is in use. Thanks for hints Ralf

Any downside to mount -o noatime?

I'd like to reduce the wear-and-tear on my SSDs and eliminate the unnecessary metadata writes on my backup media that only slow down the backup process. So I want to add noatime to all my mounts. Is there any downside to this? At one time I remember atime being useful for tmpwatch, which removes files in /tmp that haven't been accessed in a week or two. But I can live without that feature.

You may get just as much SSD "savings" by putting /var/log and /tmp into a RAM disk. I do this with all of my Raspberry Pi's, since SD cards burn through pretty quickly, and I have several that haven't had their SD cards replaced in a couple years. Hello, We are testing an IPA/IDM infrastructure which is a mix of RHEL 8 and CentOS Stream 8 environments. The configuration has been completed since last summer, and it is working fine between updates. Currently, the CentOS Stream 8 IPA servers cannot upgrade. Hi, I am running the below open source components on CentOS Linux release 7.9.2009 (Core) 1. nginx service 2. mysql service 3. php framework 4. pph-fpm service 5. composer A Dependency Manager for PHP Is there a way to notify via email if there are any new security updates available for CentOS Linux release 7.9.2009 along with the above open source components which are running? Currently, I am manually running the *yum -y update* command to update the OS along with the above open source components. Hello. I had a CentOS Stream 9 installation in a KVM VM. Today a "dnf upgrade" lead to an unusable system: dnf, rpm commands complain that "glibc cpu does not support x86-64-v2" or "CPU ISA level is lower than required". The updates leading to this state seem to be: python3 3.9.10-1, glibc 2.34-21, rpm 4.16.1.3-10 What happened? Thanks, A.
