Format details for a raid partition....

So I have been playing with a RAID 10 f2 ( 2 disks far layout) setup...thanks for all of the advice..Now I am playing with the format and want to make sure I have it setup the best that I can, my raid was built using the raid 10 option with 2 disks with the layout=far, chunk size 512....now I read all of the docs I could find about format and stride and stripe size and this is what i came up with... mkfs -t ext4 -E stride=128,stripe-width=32 /dev/md0 Someone let meknow if this looks right, but since i only have two disks to get my stride 512/4k=128 and then to get my stripe 2/2*128/4=32 Does that look right and if not let me know but more important how to obtain the right number so I can do it correctly in the future...Thanks.

sata AHCI controllers (real and virtual)

I saw something somewhere about AHCI support requiring kernel 2.6.19 or later. But the current CentOS/RHEL stable kernels are 2.6.18 I'm trying to run CentOS/RHEL in a VirtualBox vm, which by default creates sata virtual disks with an AHCI virtual controller. These virtual machines are quite unstable, and I'm wondering if the AHCI virtual controller is the problem. I do have a real physical AHCI controller and I'm wondering if I should try it on a CentOS/RHEL 5.5 box, or if I should wait for RHEL/CentOS 6, before even attempting it. -- Drew Einhorn "You can see a lot by just looking." -- Yogi Berra

best filesystem for a webserver

Dear all, i'm setting up a new machine to handle a webserver with mysql web directory contains alot of small files and database is around 15 GB i've did a bit research, read alot of articles.. mainly i came up with the understanding that: EXT3 is the set it and forget it kind of filesystem. and reiserFS is the best choice for small files though there's a bigger risk of data loss upon power failure (better solved in ext3) any advice on this matter? or any other filesystem you advise me to use on a production system? thanks

help with spec file

I am attempting to learn how to build my own rpms. I found a good tutorial online but it is a bit out of date (2007). The tutorial uses a program called 'subtitleeditor' which when it was written was at version 0.20.0alpha4. No Chinese character set in Firefox

Hi all. I'm running Centos 5.5 and have recently lost my chines characters in Firefox. Just get a lot of wierd looking boxex now, look like dominos. Any suggestions please? Keith

compression on the fly with mod_deflate on vhosts ssl

Can't login after installing Centos 5.5

I've done a clean install of Centos 5.5, largely using the default options. Those I changed were: * Changed to KDE Desktop * Added Samba and NFS4 to firewall * Changed NTP servers to those of my ISP When Centos boots what I think is a progress bar shows no progress but eventually (probably about the right amount of time for booting the OS) the user login screen partially appears (username and box, time and name of machine, a flowing "tree" symbol), but the bottom of the screen does not appear to be completed. This login screen clears and redisplays several times. Finally the screen locks with the time displayed in much exaggerated height (about a quarter of the screen height) and nothing more works. At no point can I get to a text login screen (Ctrl-Alt-F1) so I can't even debug it! Can anyone suggest what is wrong or how to overcome it?

But even this deadlocked Congress is capable of doing what the Australian Labor Party cannot — pass a mandatory ISP-based Internet filter — and do so before the end of the year. Speaker Nancy Pelosi will recall the current congress for a special lame-duck session later this year before newly elected representatives are sworn in, to pass last-minute reforms in case the Democrats lose power, as widely predicted in the polls. Among those reforms include a low-profile copyright proposal with bipartisan, almost unanimous support that just so happens to include censoring whole websites included on a government-run blacklist. The *Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act*(COICA) will blacklist sites that are “dedicated to infringing activities” regardless of where the site is hosted, with exceptions for commercially-oriented sites but not political speech. Originally planned as two blacklists, one controlled by the courts and one by the US Attorney General, the latter was dropped from the bill yesterday after ISPs raised early complaints.
