Yum segmentation fault when updating to CentOS v5.5

Hi all, I'm getting a segmentation fault with yum when I try to update a CentOS v5.4 install to v5.5. What I've done: * Ran yum clean all. * Ran yum update yum* * Ran yum update, and got the segmentation fault. * Yum suggested running with option --skip-broken, which I did. Still got the segmentation fault. * Rebooted machine and ran yum update again. Segmentation fault... * Googled some and found some hints on rebuilding the rpm-database, which I did. * Ran yum update again. Got segmentation fault again. * Disabled all 3rd party repos, rpmforge and epel, tried yum update again and got seg fault. * Disabled all plugins; priorities, fastestmirror and kmod, tried yum pdate again and got seg fault yet again. * Removed /var/cache/yum and ran yum update. Got a seg fault. Any other tips, tricks or hints I could try? FWIW, this is the only machine I've had this problem with. All others I've updated to v5.5 so far have worked w/o a hitch as upgrades go. measuring kernel speed

At our Physics research labs we do a lot with low latency networks. We have been using Centos for over 3 years now and its been great! We would like to tune and optimize our setup by removing unneeded packages -- kernel modules to be specific. I was wondering, how does one measure the speed of the kernel. Is that even possible?

update to 5.5 small issues

a couple hours after the update (and requisite reboot and reinstallation of nvidia proprietary driver), I noticed I wasn't gettting any email. upon a little investigation, I noted that the update had replaced my custom sendmail.cf with its own. I don't recall updates to sendmail doing that previously,.... also, around that time my panels stopped unhiding, so they remained in a hidden state that I could not recover them from. logged off and on and it didn't help, in fact it was worse: no panels at all. so I did a reboot and now they seem to be working. I'll have to keep an eagle-eye on them. so far, all else seems well. To my knowledge they don't build that version. Not firewall, but what?

I have a strange problem, where some clients see the website on my server and some do not. It is not about the iptables, and seems to be not about tcp wrapper. Still it is something within the box. More details: - the problem is only with some clients, with no geographical connection between them; other clients see the website just fine - the problem-clients get timeout with their browser - they get timeout also when they try a numerical ip address - but they see another machine in the same subnet just fine (when they browse by ip number), so the problem has to be inside this webserver box, right? - port 80 (not ssl) Switching off iptables does not help. The files hosts.allow and hosts.deny are empty, so I guess it's not the tcp wrapper. I am out of things to test. Problem with gs

Just updated a laptop.. everything went smoothly but noticed one issue. After updating and rebooting, I did a print test using enscript to print a test file. In a few seconds, the CPU utilization shot way up. The ghostprint gs program was using 99% CPU. The laptop fans started spinning at the high rate. Laptop got very hot very suddenly then shutdown. On reboot, the BIOS reported a temperature error and that the system was shutdown to prevent damage. On rebooting, the gs program kicked off again and again CPU shot up very high. Fans started kicking off. I killed the gs process and about 20 seconds later then fans went back to normal.

Yay! Just did it on my 32-bit and x-64 boxes. Got in without a hitch. Nice work, CentOS team! Keep it up! Now, what about the post-release updates.
