replacement for start-stop-daemon on CentOS

Hi Folks, I'd like to use "start-stop-daemon" on my centos-machine. I know , it's debian-like. But I can't find "startproc" on my machine nor in the repos. What is the CentOS-replacement for "start-stop-daemon"? Thx Timothy P.S. I found a start-stop-daemon.c script - but how to compile it? gcc start-stop-daemon.c ends in much errors.

i have downloaded files with root to a user's folder but now he is not able to delete some of them because owner is root how could i change the owner of all folders and subfolders and files under a directory

Query RPM file %post section

NFS freeze when transmitting big files

Hi, I have one old spare PC, a PIII with 128 MB RAM, that I use as a spare file server. I have a headless CentOS 5 install on it, and a 2 terabyte external USB harddisk. The machine is in my basement (because it's quite loud), and I'm using what's called "CPL" here (Courant Porteur), which is basically Ethernet over 220V power lines. It's much slower than normally cabled Ethernet, but it works OK. I setup an NFS server on this machine, with the big 2TB storage on the external disk. On the first floor, on my main PC, I setup a consistent mounting of the NFS shares in /etc/fstab, and it works. Now here's the problem. Some of the files are quite big, usually movie files that can make up to 4 GB. More often than not, when I cut/paste such a file from my local harddisk to the server, it's quite slow (understandably, due to the slow CPL connection), but then the operation freezes in the middle, the cursor is unresponsive, even [Ctrl+Alt+Backspace] doesn't work, and I have to do a hard reboot. Now I wonder what this phenomenon can be due to. Some strange bottleneck effect due to either lack of RAM to the server or the slow network or both? Any ideas? Niki

hello i have copied some sites from another server to cent os but i have faced with that non latin chars in sites seems like -> " ? " firstly i think it is an sql problem or encoding but i see that file manager see file names like : VBULLET�N4 r�tbe and i decide to create a folder with the same non latin char ü şşşüüüiiiğğğıııı it worked so how could i repair this copied fle names end file encodings because it has problems also while reading by php and publishing the same thanks

root privilleges momentarily

Hi guys, I'm searching for a way to have root privileges momentarily like on ubuntu with the sudo <user> <command> I tried su - <command> and su -l root <command> on my CentOS server but it doesn't work how should I do ? sorry for the disturbance I'm new in RH Linux distro -- Cordialement, / Greetings, Georghy FUSCO

Hi, I found 2 identical drives lying around and put them into a system. When booting from a Centos 5.x installer, and when being presented with the formatting option (disk druid), it says I have 1 volume of; mamapper/isw_bdihgcgahe_Volume0p2 I can't seem to get rid of it. I have 2 physical disks but disk druid is seeing 1 volume thats the same size as one of the 2 identical drives. I've tried everything from yanking the 2nd drive, installing Centos with 1 drive, then installing the second drive and doing; dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb ... to even installing diff OS's like Ubuntu and Windows which see 2 individual disks where I repartition/reformat the drives. Seems as though I can't truly re write a part of the master boot record or some other area. I'm pretty feeble with this crap so can any one help me get a clue on what to do? These drives may have been in some hard ware raided system of the past, am unsure and no one here knows. This is really driving me crazy!!!!! - aurf
