Launch applications on GNOME startup ?

Hi, I just installed and configured Conky, and I'd like to automatically launch it whenever I start a GNOME session. I expected to see some sort of Preferences>Launch Applications on Startup, some user-specific equivalent of rc.local, but there doesn't seem to be such an entry. Any suggestions? Niki

Resolv.conf with multiple adaptors on multiple networks

Hi All, I did a clean install of CentOS 5.3 yesterday. During setup I activated both adapters on startup. etho is my public IP and eth1 is my private/internal IP. It did not let me specify nameservers though. So I know this is resolv.conf. I know I put in: nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx But how do I put in nameservers for specific networks? Example, I want my public IP to resolve to the comcast name-servers top get out to things like Google. I want internal to default to my internal DNS once I have it setup. -Jason

Cant map Apache DAV network place to network drive

Hello: I have set up a DAV file system on my apache server using these directives in ssl.conf: Alias /files /var/www/files <Directory /var/www/files> Dav On AuthType Basic AuthName "Filesystem access" AuthUserFile /var/www/files.passwd require valid-user Options Indexes </Directory> On my client machine (Windows XP SP3), I am able to add the https location as a network place. But, when I go to map the network place as a network drive, I can browse to the network place and see the folders, but the OK button is always greyed out. Is there something wrong in my Apache config or is Windows being obtuse? Does anyone know how to fix this? RSync Issues

Hi All, Rsyncing to a USB drive. I am in single user mode. I am doing: rsync -avx --stats --progress --ignore-existing --exclude 'home/backup/ data' / /mnt/sdb2/ But I dont see if ignoring existing. A previous rsync stalled and now it seems to be copying them again rather than ignoring them. Does anyone have thoughts? -ML

Hi All, I had a few 320gb sata drives that had OS X on them. Before that they were Windows for testing. I put them in an IBM eServer 335 and now trying to install CentOS 5.3 I get to the partition -> Create custom. I take sda and create a swap and a software raid partition. Same with sdb I then click Raid, mount at / and Raid1 (Mirroring) I try to proceed and I get: boot partition is on a disk using GPT partitioning scheme but this machine cannot boot using GPT. I have never seen this before. Advice? -Jason

choppy audio playback

Oh, wise Centaurs, On the last install (Suse) I was running on this old notebook (Dell i600m) the audio worked fine. Specifically, Realplayer and onsite players (like you get at NPR and other sites) and youtube played just fine. But with this current install (CentOS 5.3, fully updated) all of those sources just mentioned play choppy. It's like an echo so severe that it's impossible to make out what's being said or played. Oddly, piping "festival" into "play" works fine as does using "play" on wav files. Realplay (Gold 11) plays mp3 files just fine too. disk I/O problems and Solutions

Hey folks, CentOS / PostgreSQL shop over here. I'm hitting 3 of my favorite lists with this, so here's hoping that the BCC trick is the right way to do it :-) We've just discovered thanks to a new Munin plugin http://blogs.amd.co.at/robe/2008/12/graphing-linux-disk-io-statistics-with-… that our production DB is completely maxing out in I/O for about a 3 hour stretch from 6am til 9am This is "device utilization" as per the last graph at the above link. Load went down for a while but is now between 70% and 95% sustained. We've only had this plugin going for less than a day so I don't really have any more data going back further. But we've suspected a disk issue for some time - just have not been able to prove it. Our system IBM 3650 - quad 2Ghz e5405 Xeon 8K SAS RAID Controller 6 x 300G 15K/RPM SAS Drives /dev/sda - 2 drives configured as a RAID 1 for 300G for the OS /dev/sdb - 3 drives configured as RAID5 for 600G for the DB 1 drive as a global hot spare /dev/sdb is the one that is maxing out. We need to have a very serious look at fixing this situation. But we don't have the money to be experimenting with solutions that won't solve our problem. And our budget is fairly limited. Is there a public library somewhere of disk subsystems and their performance figures? Done with some semblance of a standard benchmark? One benchmark I am partial to is this one : http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/PgCon_2009/Greg_Smith_Hardware_Benchmarking… One thing I am thinking of in the immediate term is taking the RAID5 + hot spare and converting it to RAID10 with the same amount of storage. Will that perform much better? In general we are planning to move away from RAID5 toward RAID10. We also have on order an external IBM array (don't have the exact name on hand but model number was 3000) with 12 drive bays. We ordered it with just 4 x SATAII drives, and were going to put it on a different system as a RAID10. These are just 7200 RPM drives - the goal was cheaper storage because the SAS drives are about twice as much per drive, and it is only a 300G drive versus the 1T SATA2 drives. IIRC the SATA2 drives are about $200 each and the SAS 300G drives about $500 each. So I have 2 thoughts with this 12 disk array. 1 is to fill it up with 12 x cheap SATA2 drives and hope that even though the spin-rate is a lot slower, that the fact that it has more drives will make it perform better. But somehow I am doubtful about that. The other thought is to bite the bullet and fill it up with 300G SAS drives. any thoughts here? recommendations on what to do with a tight budget? It could be the answer is that I just have to go back to the bean counters and tell them we have no choice but to start spending some real money. But on what? steps to add a new physical disk to existing LVM setup in new centos box?

Not a centos specific question here, but if anyone can save me from shooting myself in the foot would appreciate any pointers.... I have an older centos 4.7 box that I recently replaced with a newer one running centos 5.3. I'd like to add the hard disk from the older one to the newer one before I scrap it for good. I don't care about the data on it, would just like the extra drive on the newer one for my home lan usage. The disk layout on the older one is a 2 partition (/boot and /) with / being a logical volume. Bare Metal vs virtualization

Hello to all: I know this list is generally Linux-only, but I figured I'd try to gain wisdom from those with hard-core Windows needs, too. I was recently pricing out a high-end desktop system for a user who will doing a lot of CAD, Matlab, SolidWorks, and other apps that will utilize a lot of number crunching and video. The quote for the desktop (64-bit Vista is likely), which included 12 GB RAM, two 1 TB SATA hard drives, a high-end NVidia 3D video card, and two Intel quad-core 3.3 Ghz processors, was about $15k. An approval manager asked if the money could be better spent towards a cluster for others to use. This user's needs are for Windows-based apps. The open question, then, is can the results the user needs be derived from a high-end Windows cluster or virtual environment that is multi-user capable and runs Windows-based apps, or do they need bare metal for true results and performance? I awaiting an answer on this from the user. In the meantime, for those who may have been faced with this, too, what have you discovered/learned? Thanks. Scott
