Web server in a sandbox?

I'd like to understand better the sysadmin aspects of running a wiki. I don't have, and don't intend to at this stage, a web server, but I do have spare capacity on my LAN server box, where I'd like to install MediaWiki. I found this article: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/documentation-guide/en_US/sn-sandbox-setup.ht… Would it be straightforward to follow those instructions on a CentOS5 box? Anything I should be aware of? Remember that this is a whole new ballgame for me. Is it likely to meet my needs? DNS is confusing! (I really need some help understanding!)

OK, I am confused and DNS is the reason. So, Comcast, 13 public IP's bound to my modem. Each public IP has a DNS name from comcast (they assign it automatically) like: 173.13.167.209 --> 173-13-167-209-sfba.hfc.comcastbusiness.net I created a DNS entry at GoDaddy for 173.13.167.209 that is 'inhouse.theindiecompanyllc.com' When eth0 is alive, I see that it tells me my name is 173-13-167-209-sfba.hfc.comcastbusiness.net since I am using a comcast DNS Server. So if I setup my own internal caching name server for 173.13.167.209 then I have a third name or can I just use the GoDaddy DNS entry I gave it? Do I then set my systems to use my local name server for their information and not Comcast? How does that effect internet browsing where I dont have entries for google.com, etc in my local name server? Lastly, If I have two NICS (one is 173.13.167.209 and second private internal IP) For my local name server I would have two entries, one for public and one for the private card so I can do something like 'inhouse.local' and get intranet or ssh inhouse.local, etc correct? Unexpected Enconsistency

Hi Linux geeks; I have just shipped from windows to linux. I am setting up a linuxa server with centos. now after 5 to 6 normal startups shutdown; now this problem has come up. I am not able to get any relevant link any where. /mote: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck manually can any body please tell me what is this. and how to solve the problem. Yeah! I agree you ! If you install CentOS in Windows , you firstly backup the important data to some place in case of the machine is crashed;Then you can start to install CentOS by the useful tool which called grub-for-docs. That tool is to build to grub for CentOS and Windows .You can search it by Googling. Gook Luck! And hope this can help you! how to turn off "update info" on /var/log/messages

we have CENTOS 5.3 on DELL server. This server is inside firewall and it continue get error messages on /var/log/messages: error getting update info: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: base. My doubts with apache server on centos installation

Hi Linux geeks, I have just started to setup a production server with centos; and moved from windows server to centos. My first encounter with this great linux distro is good. I am not able to understand what is the point of having scattered folders for apache server installation. when i see the /etc/httpd folder; it has only conf folder and links to logs, module and , run. As i have been working on Windows where all these files are stored in a single installation folder. So, this makes me quite confused to start with. Can anyone tell me what is the idea behind using such a installation pattern. Now i am going to install java, I have two options via RPM and other is extracting the distro and use it. i have a feeling if i use first option, all the folders like jre and jdk will be palced any where. Not to be found. Please tell me or point to any relevant link. so i can go ahead without any doubt over this issue. -- Regards, Vijay Shanker
