Server Build Example

I'm coming from the Fedora arena and I want to build, what I would call, a production server. I'm to the point where I don't want to upgrade every 6-months. I'm running Oracle DB 11g, a Tomcat/JBoss hybrid application server, and several other server type functions. Is there an example of building a server that boots into init3? Thanks, Gene Poole

CPU usage over estimated?

I have a quad core CPU running Centos5. When I use top, I see that running processes use 245% instead of 100%. If I use gkrellm, I just see one core being used 100%. top: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SWAP SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 18037 thba 31 15 304m 242m 62m 44m R 245.3 4.1 148:58.72 ic Also in the log of some programs I see this strange factor: CPU Seconds = 2632 Wall Clock Seconds = 1090 There are all single threaded programs, so it's not that more cores are being used. Swap priorities with swapon (Is my swap drive working?)

Hey Listee's I have a CentOS server with 2GB of ram and a swap drive of 4GB; swapon -a shows my swap drive as 4GB with only about 350 bytes in use (which is fine as my server idles with about 350-400MB ram usage so no swap should be in use. However my one and only swap drive had a priority of -1. I had read that the swap drive priority doesn't matter too much because I only have one swap drive so the kernel hasn't got to make a choice but also that after a certain kernel version (which is think was like 1.3.x?) it didn't even use the priority value and my kernel is newer (I have 2.6.18-128.1.6.e15). Basically I have read difference things from difference source on the old interwebwrok and seek clarification. In the confusion I set my swap drive priority from -1 to 1 because I thought that if the drive priority were a negative value it might not actually use the swap drive. Ultimately I can't tell because there currently isn't enough memory usage demand on the server. On a side note: I'm a reformed Windows admin and have seen the light and am moving each server one at a time over to Linux so I am used to poor memory management and needing massive page files. Realistically the swap drive shouldn't been in use but I am just worried then when this server goes live it will hit 2GB of ram usage and the swap won't kick in. Is there anyway I can check? But obviously it isn't sufficient for the BCM4312. eth0 works well (although DNS dies on a regular basis, for which there are a lot of heated discussions about NetworkManager and dns on the various linux sites). eth1 is not found and when I right-click on the NetworkManager icon on the top right corner of the screen, it shows a wireless in a grayed out text. When I go to System>Administration>Network, I cannot enable the wireless (eth1) device. It tries and then after trying to find an IP, it fails.

DRBD+GFS - Logical Volume problem

Hi list. I am dealing with DRBD (+GFS as its DLM). GFS configuration needs a CLVMD configuration. So, after syncronized my (two) /dev/drbd0 block devices, I start the clvmd service and try to create a clustered logical volume. rpm and md5sum query

Hi, If I do an md5sum across 4 machines all running Centos5-x86_64 on /bin/bash why does it show a different checksum ? -> ssh box4 md5sum -b /bin/bash 53d2152059125e221a38099369e5777e */bin/bash -> ssh box6 md5sum -b /bin/bash e22fb934b0a4a840a330f47559d27205 */bin/bash -> ssh box5 md5sum -b /bin/bash 34bd0269a3ca9ce15e3bf56957d95609 */bin/bash -> ssh box2 md5sum -b /bin/bash c830775b0f99dcd7a0d1dd6117f7d721 */bin/bash More intriguing is that rpm -V shows that the binaries match the rpm database on each server.
