It recognized the dvd and played it...but it gives me an error/warning about dropping lots of frames and jerks to a halt once every few seconds. I'm working my way through the xine FAQ concerning performance to see if I can fix that on this laptop. The laptop is only about 18 mo old and not a dog. It is an Intel duo with 2GM of ram, and should have enough steam to play a dvd. It plays them well under MS Vista, but jerky under Centos 5.3 and xine, so it has to be a software issue.

Good md5sum snapshot tool?

I have a server that is undergoing some patching soon and would like to make note of any files that have changed after the patching is complete. Can you recommend a tool that uses md5sum snapshots to do a quick before and after test, showing anything that's changed on a particular file system?

I have this line: ALSA=`aplay --version` in a script. when I execute the script I get the message line 187: --version: command not found when I do "aplay --version" on the command line it works just fine. What is happening here, --version is a valid command line option? Thanks, jerry

Dovecot under brute force attack - nice attacker

Hi List, optimizing the configuration on one of our servers (which was hit by a brute force attack on dovecot) showed an odd behavior. The short story: On one of our servers an attacker did a brute force attack on dovecot (pop3). Since the attacker closed and reopened the connection after every user/password combination the logs showed many lines like this: dovecot: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<test>,...... The problem: If the attacker wouldn't have closed and reopened the connection no log would have been generated and he/she would have endless tries. Not even an iptables/hashlimit or fail2ban would have kicked in. How to reproduce: telnet dovecot-server pop3 user test pass test1 user test pass test2 ... QUIT ->Only the last try gets logged. Question: Is there any way to close the connection after the first wrong user/pass combination. So an attacker would be forced to reopen it? Any other Ideas? Henry

I've recently read: Linux Find Out If PCI Hardware Supported or Not In The Current Running Kernel<http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-find-supported-pci-hardware-drivers.html> So, if I: grep 27d8 /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/modules.pcimap and see this: snd-hda-intel 0x00008086 0x000027d8 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x0 then it's sure that my PCI Hardware is supported? I Don't need anything to do? Is there a way for lsusb too? How could I know that my hardware (connected to my pc or not) is supported? - sorry for asking this: but is there a "devmgmt.msc" (windows..) "like" software, solution under Linux, where can I see that is my pc's hardwares recognized correctly? Thank you

yum best policy && magic.mime problem (httpd update)

Hi! I have 2 questions : 1.
