Questions wrt system-config-soundcard

1) What exactly happens when I press the "reload audio drivers" button? I want a command-line analogue, so that I can do it remotely, via ssh (and no X forwarding). 2) How to manually set the order of sound cards and the default one, again using only command line, as I would do in the GUI of system-config-soundcard? 3) Why don't the settings made there stick? I have three to four sound devices (two pci and one or two usb, depending on what is plugged in), and on every reboot cards tend to get shuffled and the wrong one is typically the default. 3) Is there maybe a system-config-soundcard-tui or something equivalent which would make my life easier and make the first two questions obsolete? 4) Why there is no man page for system-config-soundcard? I would really appreciate some help with this. CentOS 5.3, if it matters. Best, :-) Marko

Upgrade mail server to new machine

I have an old RHEL3 box that I am upgrading to CentOS5. I picked up a new Dell Poweredge R200 to use for that. Is there an easy way to copy all the user accounts and existing mail from the old server to the new one? Thanks. -- -=/>Thom

How to run command as apache?

Hello: I have a subversion repository set up in /usr/local/svn/MyProject. For security, I have that directory set to apache as the owner and group and all files are mode 700. I need to run a svnsync command as the apache user so it may write to the repository. I tried this command: su apache -c "/usr/bin/svnsync sync https://svn2.jammconsulting.com/svn/MyProject" But I get this message from the su command: This account is currently not available. I am guessing this happens because the apache account is set with no password and a nologin shell. How can I run a command as the apache user? Best mobile SSH client?

I'm up for a cell phone contract renewal and am considering upgrading my handset. I looked at some devices at my local AT&T store but nothing really jumped out at me. I'm particularly interested in a cell phone that has a reliable ssh client, with ssh-agent and public key authentication abilities. Those of you who administer systems remotely, what mobile ssh client do you recommend? What phone would you recommend?

Hi All, I need to write a script that I will manually start (or a cron job in future) but I need it to do a number of things in order one after another. How do i do that so everything gets dont as the steps depend on each other. Example: cd /system_backups/ tar cvf apache-conf.tar /etc/httpd/conf/* gzip -v9 apache-conf.tar tar cvf apache-data.tar /var/www/* gzip -v9 apache-data.tar then last step... tar cvf <current_date>-system_backup.tar <all> the gzip files above gzip -v9 <current_date>-system_backup.tar scp <current_date>-system_backup.tar.gz user@10.0.0.1:/. etc...etc.... My questions: 1. How do I execute each statement and make sure subsequent statements are not executed until the previous is done? 2. How do I error check so if a step fails the script stops? 3. Since I run an SMTP Server on this box can I e-mail myself from bash the nightly results? 4. when I want to run the scp to send over the file to another machine for safety, how can I have it know the password to the machine I am scp'ing to? My mind is going crazy sort of with the things that I could do to protect myself in case of a system failure and making restoring easier. Can anyone provide insight for me? -Jason

openldap 5.1 crashing

Adding an 'official' CentOS image to the Amazon EC2 (Electronic Compute Cloud)

I'm starting to use the EC2 cloud (as are others) and noticed that all the available CentOS images seem to be of dubious origin. I think it would further the reputation and popularity of CentOS if it were represented in an official way. In case people aren't aware, when you create an AWS (Amazon Web Services) account there's a management console that shows a list of available images. Of this list, some are published by Amazon, others are uploaded anonymously, or you can upload your own. Given the dubious nature of an anonymous image and a lack of an Amazon image for CentOS, I'm left in the third camp - creating/bundling/uploading my own. Luckily I have the required 64 bit hardware to generate a 64 bit image! Selfishly I'd love to just start up an existing image published by centos.org but one's not available. Interestingly one is available from Amazon for both Fedora and Windows. Jason
