Hierarchial storage management or automated archival to tape

Hi list! While regular backup solutions like amanda or bacula are very good at their job, ie keeping point2point copies of the files currently on disk, I find them less suited for archiving - having unused files move to tape in duplo and stay there until requested. I've even read of multi-tier solutions - move to slower disks after a week and further on to tape after a month. Does anyone have some experience or suggestions for this? The project will deal with ~100 TB of growth per year, most files somewhere between 2 and 50 GB. Yes, it can be done with everything in one filesystem, but I'm concerned about running a full backup every month of 500 TB ;-) Not to mention the time required for recovery in case the filesys crashes.... Problems with RPM Database, usual techniques not working to recover DB

I have a CentOS 5.2 i386 Development server that has a rpm db problem that I can't seem to solve. I have followed all the advice on Daniel Berrange's page on rpm db recovery: http://people.redhat.com/berrange/notes/rpmrecovery.html With no results, all I get from "rpm -qa" is list of two public gpg keys that are listed in the file system root. My question is where do I start to recover from this? Do I reinstall rpm? So far rpm refuses to do so (using any of the command line options and combination of options), I could do it with a tar command from source rpm file, or is that asking for more trouble? Looking for feedback on ideas to recover this system, it had a nasty crash with the install of new kernel that fixed the plusxen kernel problem in early December and I'm trying to get it back on its feet again. DNS Issues

Hello List I am having a second thing and this time I made sure that I did not hijack any other threads :-) I have a pptp vpn server that works just fine except from dns, I can ping a server and it will resolv but no packages are being received, does anyone have any clues on how to sort this out? I have tried to disable in a xp client ³Use default gateway on remote network² and then add in the dns servers manually in the clients pptp configuration but no difference at all, not even if I then enable the ³Use default gateway on remote network² and leave the dns settings. How to change an executable into a directory

I just discovered that a couple of files on my system are ELF executables when they should be directories. How do I change a file into a directory? I don't think I've ever run into this one before.... Thanks mhr CentOS 5.2 w/all updates

Checking fan state

I just replaced my fan in my nc2400. It was a 5hour job. Had to pull EVERYTHING to get to where they have the fan in the thing. Now I want to know if it is working. It is suppose to be thermostatically controlled, and it takes time to heat up. So how can I find out what Centos knows about the system temp and fan state? It was hard to tell if I put the connector in the right way. At least if that is all I did wrong, I can get to that connector with only pulling the drive....

Yum Issue.. Installing Older Package Version

Hello fellow CentOS'ers- I'm trying to install a package from a not-to-be-named repository (privately operated for some proprietary software). They currently have a package I need but offer multiple versions. However, if I simply 'yum install packagename' it defaults to pulling down the most recent package. I would like to pull down the older version of the package but I'm unable to do so. So, how would you specify version number for a package with two candidates but the same name? Scriptable way to edit yum .repo files?

Hello, Is there a standard programmatic way to manipulate yum configuration files, particularly the .repo files? I want to add things like "priority=..." per repo, or "check_obsoletes=1" to the priorities plugin config. I can cook specific search/append using perl or sed but was wondering whether there is a more elegant way. I found Perl's Conf::INI module but it expects comments beginning with ";", not "#".
