JFS in CentOS

Hello all, I'm relatively new to CentOS, but I've been using linux as my main operating system on both the desktop and server ends for the past 4 years. I currently have a PIII server with two 160GB IDE hard drives in it, in a virtual RAID 1 array. At the time of installation, the only FS choices for the largest partition, 120GB, were ext2 and ext3. I chose ext3, but now am wishing to reformat the partition as JFS to skip long file system check times. I've done Google searches regarding the topic, which lead me to added centos.plus to my repo list, and installed the only kernel I see as being available from CentOSPlus, and yet I still have no JFS modules loaded or anywhere in /lib/modules/. I installed JFSUtils from the CentOSPlus repo, but have no way to use the partition that has been created (by myself, using mkfs.jfs). Short of compiling a kernel with JFS support from the source package provided with CentOS, I don't know what to do. Has anyone else used JFS on CentOS 5.2 successfully? How did you do it? If you don't follow the RFC's than how can anyone expect your protocols or operations to be compliant with any standards? Now, someone decided, in their infinite wisdom, that if you send an auto-reply directing you to a web form, that this is compliant.. where as I read it as a cheat! That does not allow me to use the abuse@ address for the function it was intended and as stated earlier: I DO NOT HAVE TIME IN A DAY TO GO REPORTING SOME ADMINISTRATOR'S DEFICIENCY IN POLICING HIS/HER OWN USERS THROUGH A PROPRIETARY WEB FORM. Therefore, I have been given authority to block them, meeting my management's criteria. Make sure your rules meet the RFCs and your management's criteria and you will make your life a whole lot simpler.. Oh, and argue the RFC's with management, in case they do not understand! Cheers!

How to create custom CentOS5.2 iso?

Hi, I am very new to this community. I want to make a custom iso which contains CentOS5.2 & scopserv(asterisk based PBX). Please provide me the proper steps for creating an iso. I have created an iso but during installation, only CentOS5.2 rpms get installed & scopserv rpms doesn't install. Is genhdlist command is required? But this command is not working with latest anaconda-runtime version i.e. anaconda-runtime-11. Please help me as I am stuck somewhere. Thanx in advance. Manoj Kumar

ssh error in /var/log/secure

Hi - I just bought a xen VPS and am running CentOS 5 on it (updated to 5.2). With all my personal machines sitting at home behind a router with all ports (except for BitTorrent) closed - I had forgotten how frequent brute force ssh attacks are, but within a day, the log was loaded with them. So I did two things - I installed and configured pam_abl and I moved the ssh port to 1294 ( a > 1024 number that means something to me so easy to remember) and then blocked port 22 in iptables. Interestingly - after installing pam_able before I configured and restarted sshd, pam_able was already building a database of hosts - the attacks were that frequent. Nothing after restarting sshd on the new port though, at least so far. Anyway - while the server is working on the new port and I can connect, I noticed this error: Oct 4 09:01:25 li34-4 sshd[2305]: Server listening on :: port 1294. Oct 4 09:01:25 li34-4 sshd[2305]: error: Bind to port 1294 on 0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use. Is that caused by a mis-configuration on my part? The only change I made to sshd was the Port directive (root login was already disabled in the xen image I started from) It looks like it is listening on the port and then trying to bind to the port a second time. Is that from having two IPs on the same nic (eth0 and eth0:1) ?

Putting CentOS 5.2 kernel on CentOS 4.x

Has anyone tried to install a CentOS 5.x kernel on a CentOS 4.x system? Is this doable? I"m aware of the dependencies but I'm curious if anyone has done this successfully. Basically, we have a few hundred 4.x systems that cannot be upgraded to 5.x, yet, but we do need the kernel update to fix the XFS problem as described here: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=3125
