why yum cannot find lighttpd?

Hi, I tried to install lighttpd in CentOS 5.2, but yum list lighttpd returned an error of "no matching packages to list". Should it be installed from source tarball? Thank you. Kind Regards, Jim

nfs cannot see mount points on other machine

I'm having a bit of a problem with what I can "see" over nfs. I have two machines that nfs their root to each other and it seems to work. However, I now found out that some of the root directories that are listed are "fake" ones. A comparison of the root on both machines shows that some directories are the same and I can access those files on the other machine. However, there are some directories that are different. That is true for all the "special" directories like dev, proc, sys (which makes some sense), but also for directories that are mount points on the other machine. Does nfs not give me access to those mount points? Do I have to create a second nfs mount to that machine which mounts only that mount point? Or do I need some parameter to mount these mount points under the normal mount? What's weird is that if I create a file in these "fake" directories I can do that and it's listed like it actually were created on the other machine. But it gets created on *this* machine. When I then unmount, it's gone (like the whole nfs mount) and when I remount it's back. Where is it actually getting created and how can I remove it? Is there some nfs cache that holds it? Minimized Firefox is not visible on panel in CentOS 5.2

Hi, I opened a Firefox on Desktop, but when I clicked Minimize Window button, the Firefox disappeared and there was no icon on the panel, I simply could not find it any more (it did not close), this was the same for the terminal as well . How can I make the Firefox icon visible on panel (or workplaces) even it was minimized? Thank you. Jim

Pidgin problem on 5.2

Having a problem with Pidgin that may have come after the 5.2 upgrade. I don't use pidgin daily, but the last time I used it (a week or two ago) it was fine. Now, when clicking the icon nothing visible happens. When I open an xterm and run it from there I get this: $ pidgin libnm_glib_nm_state_cb: dbus returned an error. (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files and the terminal does not return to a prompt. there is no visible window for Pidgin, but parts of it may be running, as I heard the sound that (I think) means "buddy comes online". running "ps ax | grep -y pidgin" returns one process, so it's not entirely kaput. Anyone else seem this, or anyone have suggestions? Oh, also, I've recently enabled "desktop effects". Problem with Sendmail + Apache

In my /var/log/maillog show this message: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(apache): can not chdir(/var/spool/clientmqueue/): Permission denied Permissions on dir: drwxrwx--- 2 smmsp smmsp 36864 Jun 30 15:23 clientmqueue If i change the permissions to 777 works normaly but is not safe and in other server works fine with the permissions 770. 3ware performance in CentOS

Have a look at these pages: http://www.bofh-hunter.com/2008/06/13/3ware-performance-in-centos/ https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=444759 I'm comparing the default 5.1 64bit kernel with the patched one posted in the bug report (kernel-2.6.18-53.1.21.el5.bz321111.x86_64) and I don't quite see any significant difference in write performance for this command: dd if=/dev/zero of=/logs/test bs=100M count=1000 (100GB of data, written in 100MB blocks) It's a Supermicro server, the motherboard is (according to the stuff painted on the mobo itself) Super X7DBI+, Intel Xeon L5420 with 8 cores total, 3ware 9650SE using the driver from the manufacturer's site. I tested 2 disks in a mirror RAID volume. I use Google Apps for my domain, hosted on a CentOS server. How could I setup my sendmail.mc to route Sendmail mails through the Gmail SMTP? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mike

kernel-smp for CentOS 5

Hello All, I recently installed CentOS 5 and was trying to locate the kernel-smp packages but without success. Have these packages been removed from the distro or renamed? Does anyone know how many processors the default kernel will handle and if it's optimzed for it? Thanks, james

What are these TCP errors telling me?

Lately, the error messages below have been showing up in the log for the past 3 days. Is something broken, or someone trying to break in or what? I'm completely clueless about this.
