64 bit aware CPU

3ware performance in CentOS

Have a look at these pages: http://www.bofh-hunter.com/2008/06/13/3ware-performance-in-centos/ https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=444759 I'm comparing the default 5.1 64bit kernel with the patched one posted in the bug report (kernel-2.6.18-53.1.21.el5.bz321111.x86_64) and I don't quite see any significant difference in write performance for this command: dd if=/dev/zero of=/logs/test bs=100M count=1000 (100GB of data, written in 100MB blocks) It's a Supermicro server, the motherboard is (according to the stuff painted on the mobo itself) Super X7DBI+, Intel Xeon L5420 with 8 cores total, 3ware 9650SE using the driver from the manufacturer's site. I tested 2 disks in a mirror RAID volume. Sendmail with Google Apps SMTP

I use Google Apps for my domain, hosted on a CentOS server. How could I setup my sendmail.mc to route Sendmail mails through the Gmail SMTP? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mike

kernel-smp for CentOS 5

Hello All, I recently installed CentOS 5 and was trying to locate the kernel-smp packages but without success. Have these packages been removed from the distro or renamed? Does anyone know how many processors the default kernel will handle and if it's optimzed for it? Thanks, james

What are these TCP errors telling me?

Lately, the error messages below have been showing up in the log for the past 3 days. Is something broken, or someone trying to break in or what? I'm completely clueless about this. system-auth.rpmnew

The upgrade to 5.2 creates /etc/pam.d/system-auth.rpmnew. I see that /etc/pam.d/system-auth actually is a symlink to system-auth-ac. Is it recommended to replace that symlink with the rpmnew file? xorg and backlight

Hi all, I have found one problem after upgrading to CentOS 5.2 x86 on my HP Compaq nx7010 laptop. When I close and open lid, backlight is not turned on again. I can see my desktop, but the only thing I can do is press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to restart X11. Then the backlight is restored. xorg.conf is generic, created by installation process. I use ATI proprietary driver 8.28.08 (the last which support Mobility Radeon 9200). I would appreciate any hint or help.
