MIssing Log Entries in /var/log/messages

Hello, has something changed in CentOS 5 logging behavior? I get no entries in /var/log/messages when I start or stop services (httpd, ssh, etc.). My /etc/syslog.conf is the installation default: # Log all kernel messages to the console. # Logging much else clutters up the screen. #kern.* /dev/console # Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher. # Don't log private authentication messages! *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /var/log/messages # The authpriv file has restricted access. authpriv.* /var/log/secure # Log all the mail messages in one place. mail.* -/var/log/maillog # Log cron stuff cron.* /var/log/cron # Everybody gets emergency messages *.emerg * # Save news errors of level crit and higher in a special file. uucp,news.crit /var/log/spooler # Save boot messages also to boot.log local7.* /var/log/boot.log Any Ideas? Trying to understand Remote desktops

This is something that has been long overdue for me to set up, and how I am looking it hard in the face. Back in '94, I was doing REAL X-Terminals into UNIX systems. Watching simple mouse meanderings eat up all available bandwidth, and forget it if you resized a window and had to download the new font..... So here we are, in the modern times with GNOME (I chose that over KDE, because), and Open Office, Thunderbird, and lots of other nice graphical apps. I want to run the apps on an app server and access them for a thin client. I am familiar with the K12TLSP project, but right now I want to see what I can do myself. What is the minimum X install for the server to run Open Office with the only graphical usage the remote client? I well learned back in '91 when I started with TCP/IP, the TCP Client/Server model and how X-Windows and SNMP ran 'backwards'. That is your device was the Server and the device with the data/app was the client. So in theory, all I would need to have on the Centos Apps server is the X and Gnome client parts and some remote server (like XRDP)? I have the test box sitting here, ready to run an install.... I think it would be so cool, to see my Gnome desktop from the apps server running on my little old Libretto running DSL.

Stage2.img

I've got a RAID card (3ware 9650SE-2LP) that wasn't supported by the in-kernel driver until 2.6.19+ Since CentOS 5.0 is based on 2.6.18-8.el5 is was looking for a way to incorporate their driver from the website so I wouldn't have to use the "linux dd" kernel option all the time. (trying to automate as much as possible using kickstart, scripts, etc). Through reading about other OSes I've found that the most common way to do this would be to modify the stage2.img file on the boot DVD and add the driver to the boot kernel image. The problem is, I can't mount the stage2.img file using cramfs. # mount -o loop -t cramfs stage2.img /mnt mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Any suggestions? or should I try going about this another way? - G

mdadm --create on Centos5?

Is there some new trick to making raid devices on Centos5? # mdadm --create /dev/md3 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdc1 mdadm: error opening /dev/md3: No such file or directory I thought that worked on earlier versions. USB DVD/CDRW not automounting

I 'just' noticed that my USB DVD/CDRW is not automounting in my Centos 5 installs. Various USB drives do: USB flash drives, USB multi card drives, and USB IDE converters. I can issue a: mnt /dev/cdrom /media but why is this needed?

low profile video cards for linux

Recently I posted about linux and agp cards and some simple video stuff This is for a school on a budget An 8mb built in adapter does cut it real well. Conga / luci question

After playing with conga/luci i'm wondering that it's not possible to reset and/or remove the generated cluster configuration. Somebody knows how to achieve this? I did not find any hint in the RH manuals. Installing Centos 5 on one system and moving the HD to another....

I have a bug report in (0002288) on an install failure on my decTOPs (Centos 4.5 installed on them). I have tried a lot of combinations and it is getting tiring. What what happen, or rather how do I get the following to work: Put my HD into a computer (Compaq SSF that I have installed Centos 5 on with no trouble), install Centos 5, move the HD to the decTOP. Different Video card. No PS/2 keyboard of mouse on the decTOP INTEL vs AMD cpu Could it work?
