I just did an install of CentOS 5 on one of my machines. However, when I try to use the 'service' command (such as 'service httpd start') I get an error that the service command is not found. Why would that be? Where does this command come from? I can launch the services just fine using the respective /etc/init.d/ entries. --------------------------------------------------------- Sorry for the broken webmailer... Are you performing these actions as root? A user that does not have root access cannot start services. dialog boxes on X

All, I have been looking at zenity to pop up messages on the X screen. Is there another alternative to zenity that I have not found? I need to be able to completely remove the OK button, I cannot find a way in zenity to do this. also It would be nice to have a --timeout 5 option on the command line also. Any suggestions? Jerry

Progress on the decTOP

The unit has two sets of two USB ports. Each port is marked. One for the keyboard, another for the mouse, a third for the ethernet, and the forth for the printer. If I put the USB DVD/CDRW in the mouse port, and the keyboard in the printer port, I see the USB driver loading, and the CD is recognized. For both Centos 4.5 and 5.0 I have submitted a bug report on the Centos 5 crash further into the install.....

simplest boot to set hardware clock

Well I found a significant source of my problems with these decTOPs. Hardware clock is back at Jan 2006. And many things fail..... And there is no way to access the bios from a boot sequence. On the one I discovered this, I watched everything get errors during all the reboots a Trixbox install goes through. Once I was allowed to log in, I ended using date to set the system date and hwclock to use the system date to fix the hardware clock. Thanks!

Diskless client from system-config-netboot doesn't boot.

Hi folks, I've followed a set of instructions I found on http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/centos_linux_guides/centos_enterpris… which describes using system-config-netboot to set up PXE booting. I used a CentOS-4.3 install (custom, all options de-selected, then anaconda-busybox installed after the fact) as a reference/base. I followed the instructions, extrapolating a bit as the window defining the diskless client has more options than those presented in the example. When I boot the PXE client, it does the pivot root operation, and finally concludes with: SELinux: Disabled at runtime SELinux: Unregistering netfilter hooks ...at which point it hangs for ever. I have tried performing a yum -y update on my reference system, then recreating the root mount point, but it fails the same way. I should probably mention that both the reference and diskless client are identical hardware, and that the hardware has successfully PXE booted a diskless OS (a RedHat 8.0 as it happens) in the past. The lack of any information on the web implies that I'm doing something trivially incorrect, can anyone tell me what it is? RAID storage - SATA, SCSI, or Fibre Channel?

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 and am looking to add more storage. I know a lot of factors can go into the type of answer given, but for present and future technology planning, should I look for a rack of SATA, SCSI, or fibre channel drives? Maybe I'm dating myself with fibre channel, and possibly SCSI? I may be looking to add a few TB now, and possibly more later. What are people using these days? What throughput and reliability are you seeing? What accounts for the cost differences? Thanks. Scott

Install stops seeing USB CDrom

I have sought information on this in the past. I have a decTOP that I can install DSL on with no trouble from my USB DVD/CDRW drive. Centos won't. Neither 4.4 or 5.0 The boot starts, the CD is being read. After I respond to language, it stops saying it can't find the CD. If I go the linux askmethod approach, I can 'see' it loading the install image from the CD, it goes through the language part. Then when I select Local CD it can't find the CD. So I was thinking. Is there a driver I should be loading? Afterall, this is a DVD/CDRW and MAYBE there is an intrepretation problem? Although I have used this SAME DVD/CDRW to install on other systems.... So it might not be a drive type issue, but rather a USB driver issue? I know from past attempts, if I go the network approach, and select a USB ethernet dongle (the last on the list) it finds my USB ethernet dongle. But that might mean that in this case the install followed a path of first loading a USB driver, and then proceeding. Why not go the Network route? This is a Trixbox install and it is a Trixbox CD.
