OT: Suggestions for database for physicians patient records?

This is very OT. If list readers can point me in the right direction, to other mailing lists, or web sites for recommended databases, that will be much appreciated! My wife's doctor wants to move records, for approximately 6000 patients (over a 12 year period), from paper (18th century) to a database (20th century). The data entry will be a PITA, for his secretaries, regardless of what software he goes with. I did some reading about MySQL, and I also did some googling for Linux+database and there are many other databases out there. One requirement is that one field be variable length (patient history: surgeries, treatments, etc.), which I suspect might vary from 200 words to 3000 words. That field size needs to be very flexible. If there are "front ends" that will make it easier for his secretaries to input patient records to the database and access it, that will be a "plus". It would also be a plus, but, it's not mandatory, if they can do this in Spanish. It's a small office (2 surgeons, nurses and secretaries) so I suspect there might be 4 to 6 workstations connected to the database server, maximum. I would like to help him get the best possible solution. Something with a large user base, excellent documentation and an active ML, like CentOS, is the goal. Thanks much! Lanny

Install on a usb flash drive

I all, I was thinking about installing centos on a usb flash drive. Perhaps a 4GIG. I dont need X or anything on this drive so installing should fit just fine. Are there boot issues with these flash drives? I'll be using a newer motherboard so the motherboard should be able to boot USB. Does this work? Have others done anything with flash drives? I am wanting this flash drive to be the ONLY drive in the computer. Kind of a dedicated machine running multiple RS232 multiport cards. Thanks, Jerry

Monitor not put in powersaving mode

I notice that CentOS 5 only blanks out my screen, but doesn't set it to powersaving mode (the power LED stays blue instead of going yellow). I think I saw this on CentOS 4 as well, but I had a CentOS 4 console machine only for a short time back then and after that only remotely used ones. Now I have one fully running workstation with X under CentOS 5 and would like to fix that. This also happens in run-level 3, so it's not specific to the X-Server or desktop manager. add new module in initrd

Hi, I would like to do a network install using PIXES boot, however the ethernet device was not supported by centos installation (RTL8110SC). How do i add this module into the initrd? I know i can use: mkinitrd --with=r8169 `uname -r`, but i did not know what is the standard modules included in the installation initrd of Centos. Thanks! --beast

Data recovery with superblocks?

It recently occurred to me, as I was partitioning a RAID with fdisk, that when I built the system, I was presented with a graphical utility that "magically" created the partitions. Now, using fdisk, I was reminded of being given superblocks. Although I haven't used data recovery techniques using superblocks, is there a way to retrieve the superblock numbers the OS has assigned to a partition? Thanks. Scott

postfix - killed by signal 11 - debug help

Any suggestions to help me troubleshoot a "killed by signal 11" problem with Postfix? I've Googled and fiddled, but cannot figure it out. I have no idea where to look/start. Based on this post, Wietse suggests this type of problem happens when there compiled with different libraries. Correlate i/o with a process

Hello: I have a server with 2 HBAs, and the users keeps complaining about performance problems. My question is, how can I relate the process with high I/O wait? Also, is it possible to see how much data is being pushed thru by my 2 HBAs? TIA!

problem with fetchmail

Could someone form the list please let me know an equalent pop connector to fetchmail?. I have problem with fetchmail that it downloads only 99 mails and in the event of mails exceeding this limit will result a socket error. Fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET) Thanks Rajeev R. Veedu

Install CentOS over FTP

Hi, Sorry for the newbie question, I've been searching the CentOS site and googled, but I couldn't find an answer (probably my bad).
