ata problem

gconf-settings for compiz get overwritten

Hi! I'm having a problem with compiz on a Centos5-machine (I know compiz is only "Beta", but it looks soooo cool). When I use the gconf-editor to edit settings of the plugins (for instance /apps/compiz/plugins/scale/allscreens/options/initiate_edge) they work as expected, they get written to the correct file in ~/.gconf, but the next time I log in the are reset to the default value that is described in the .schema-file (in /etc). Is there a way to fix these values without editing the (system-wide) schema file? Thanks for listening

CentOS 4.4 hangs after yum update

Hello: I have a server running CentOS 4.4. I just did a yum update and then rebooted the server. After the reboot, it stops after printing GRUB on the screen. Any ideas what happened? Snare client and 64-bit CentOS 5?

I've installed 64-bit snare client 1.1.1 from sourceforge on a 64-bit installation of CentOS 5. I learned that at least previous versions were configurable via a web connection to localhost:6161, but starting firefox and trying http://localhost:6161 reveals an endless attempt at the connection. nmap -sT -sU -p 0-65535 localhost reveals port 6161/tcp and 6161/udp as filtered. Firewall is enabled with the exception of 6161 tcp and udp, along with SELinux. Is snare client still configurable via localhost:6161? If so, why is it filtered? The machine has been rebooted many times for other configuration reasons, thus the firewall exception, I would think, would have opened the port. I did also disable the firewall, rebooted, and still no web connection - firefox just hangs trying to connect. Thanks for any insights/assistance. Scott

How to configure PAM in Centos 5 64-bit?

I'm new the the PAM world and have CentOS 5 64-bit installed on a system. I want to tweak some of the system-auth module settings, but the top of the file says anything configured in that file will get overwritten, as it is autogenerated by authconfig. I checked out authconfig, and it doesn't seem clear to me how to make the changes I need via authconfig. So, where do I need to look? What utility/file do I touch? Thanks. Scott

symbolic links seemingly not browseable

Hi all, I'm sure this is a quick fix, but I've not found the answer yet. On a fresh install of CentOS5, I need to use an alternate port for ftp. Currently vsftpd wants the standard port which is in use by another system on my NATted network. So...how does one go about reconfiguring vsftpd to do this? I've looked in /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf to no avail. In my Slackware days, proftpd was able to be configured by editing a single line in the .conf file. I'm hoping it's that easy using CentOS . Thanks in advance for any/all suggestions. (and advance apologies for more questions, as I know they're coming!) ~Ray

best way to upgrade php4 -> php5 on CentOS?

What is the best way to upgrade PHP4 to PHP5 on CentOS? I see from "rpm -qa" that I'm running PHP-4.3.9. Should I uninstall this old PHP4 package and then reinstall PHP5? Or is there some cool yum upgrade thing I might run? This is a VMware virtual box for testing, so I'm more concerned about learning what to do, rather than interrupting anything.
