BIOS upgrade side effects

Are there any possible undesirable effects of a BIOS upgrade? The worst I can think of is something that would change my SATA drives from being mapped as SCSI to being mapped as IDE. Ted Miller Indiana

Centos 5 scsi adapter support

Hello, I think about to change my desktop system from fedora core 6 to centos 5. But on checking out if my hardware is supported by centos 5 I could not find any support for my scsi adapter which needs a advansys.ko module (Advanced System Products, Inc ABP940-U / ABP960-U). Does centos 5 has support for this adapter by default or maybe by a kernel like centosplus? regards Olaf

Super Simple question - command to see iptables nat rules

Hi there, I have been reading the man page, and i know this is something sooo simple that is escaping me at the moment, but.... I simply (from the CLI) want to see what public ip is mapped to what private IP for what ports... but want to narrow it down to particular ones... IE I have Pub IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and want to see what internal ip it is mapped to.... I know it is something along the lines of: # iptables -L -t nat ..... I tried something like: # iptables -L -t nat | grep xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx My brain is giving up on me too early today.... =-)

Hi all, I am trying to get the modules evbug.c running on centos 5. I took the source file from the kernel, put it in a directory. I mean the source talks about dumping all key events into syslog How do I read syslog? /var/log/messages is not showing the information. Only when I type dmesg do I see the data. Hi all, I'm very glad to have found this list as I've made a leap of faith and installed CentOS5 as my new testbed/dev machine. An advance 'thank you' to all more experienced than I for answers and a promise to be concise in my (surely about to become) abundant questions and just as forthcoming with answers I may have to help others. Retrive data from repartitioned / reformatted hard drive?

Hi, The title says it all. One of my clients showed me a 120 GB hard drive that his daughter accidentally formatted, according to him. I booted the first CD I had at hand - a Slackware 11.0 install CD - and launched cdfdisk /dev/hda. cfdisk informed me that there was even no partition table. So much for reformatting. cfdisk only shows me 120 GB of free space. Any way to retrive data on this hard drive? Some magic live distribution to read data on repartitioned / reformatted hard drives? any suggestions? thanks, Niki

Error: Module Microcode does not exist... at boot time

I have just installed Centos 5.0 from DVD. I have also run the software updates and I think everything is up to date. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA945GM-S2 with an Intel E2140 processor. At boot time if I select show details - there is one error shown "in red", Like this: Applying Intel CPU microcode update. FATAL: Module microcode not found. ERROR: Module microcode does not exist in /proc/module [FAILED] The boot still seems to go ok - and the system seems to work - but I guess it is probably using some subset of the CPU instruction set. Can anyone tell me exactly what this means - and why the module is missing. The CPU I am using is fairly new - so I am not surprised that the Centos 5.0 release might not recognise it - but I would have thought that updates might have fixed it by now. Richard.

If you just want to confirm that some data is still there, you might try something like: 1) Boot from any Linux live CD (knoppix, Fedora 7, etc.). 2) Open a command window. 3) Assuming this is the only hard drive and it's /dev/hda: dd if=/dev/hda | grep 'some *short* string that should be present' 4) If your string survived, you should see something like "binary file matches'. On my laptop (dual boot to XP home or CentOS5) I see: [root@spindle ~]# dd if=/dev/hda | grep -i dos Binary file (standard input) matches Alternatively, there are some disk editors for Linux. Google turned up LDE which claims to mimic the old "Norton Disk Editor." If you go this route, you would probably do better sticking the drive into a Linux system although you might be able to find someone who has set up a Linux recovery live CD that includes LDE. I haven't used LDE but the old Norton tool was pretty amazing. Any idea what file system was on the disk originally (vfat, ntfs, ext3, etc.)? Cheers, Dave -- Politics, n.
