Vim differences between C4 and C5

I have installed CentOS 4.5 and 5 on 2 separate machines, and both have default installs of vim-enhanced on each of them. I noticed that I can get syntax highlighting as a regular user, sudo and as root in C4.5. In C5 I only get highlighting as a regular user. I diff'ed my /etc/vimrc files between each install there is no changes and neither root ~ has a .vimrc file. I had put "# vim: filetype=apache ts=4 sw=4 et" at the bottom of the apache conf file and it works great except when I 'sudo vim' or use root in c5. I tried :syntax on, as root and it didn't make a difference either. CentOS 5: $ rpm -qa vim* vim-common-7.0.109-3.el5.3 vim-minimal-7.0.109-3.el5.3 vim-enhanced-7.0.109-3.el5.3 CentOS 4: $ rpm -qa vim* vim-minimal-6.3.046-0.40E.7 vim-common-6.3.046-0.40E.7 vim-enhanced-6.3.046-0.40E.7 Is there something I am missing? It was less than obvious that it would be useless. It's only now that I've read the whole complexity of the process to be performed *before* someone could add you to the EditGroup -- it's so unbelievable for a poor civilian that I am that I feel like I am already at Gitmo! Here's what I could read one should do: 1. Complete the Contributor License Agreement, but this has prerequisite steps. 2. In order to do that, you have to create a SSH key. 3. You then have to create a GPG key. 4. You have to create a Fedora account (not a wiki account!). 5. For that, your GPG key should be published to hkp://pgp.mit.edu/. 6. Submit the form to apply for a Fedora account. 7. Request the Contributor License Agreement (CLA). 8. Edit it to agree with it, GPG-sign it, and send it back. 9. Only now you can contact someone from the EditGroup to ask for the right to edit the wiki page that holds the EPEL wishlist! To me, it would be simpler to apply to visit the Pentagon or the CIA! I am disgusted by the way the Fedora people handle all this stuff. Everyone knowing how a Bugzilla works, or even how a mailing list works, can easily find that much simpler ways were available to the public to be able to SUGGEST a few packages for inclusion in EPEL. When GNOME asked the public in August-Sept. 2006 what new game to add to GNOME games, before setting up the Usage Survey, a suggestion list was open. It was easy to add suggestions there, by simply creating a wiki account, no fuss added, no strings attached. Now I know I can't expect for *anything* from EPEL. I can only rely on what's already there, plus what we can find in centosplus, Dag, Karan, ATrpms, and a few others. I am shocked. R-C Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. trapping keystrokes

Hi all, How do you trap key strobes in centos before they are handed off to an application? In X windows I dont care what app is running or which app has focus. I need to know what key is pressed. The key can still go on to the application that is fine. I just need to know what keys are being pressed. I have tried xbindkeys but depending on which app is running I may or may not get my keypress binding, I tried loadkeys but that only works on the console and not X. Any ideas? Thanks, Jerry

Heartbeat for Centos 5- Can't build RPMS or install prebuilt RPMS

I am stuck. This is X86_64 platform. In the extras repos, there is the SRPMS for heartbeat along with the RPMS for it. I have downloaded both. But I can't build the RPMS from the SRPM as it fails compiling something in BUILD/heartbeat-2.0.8/lib/crm/pengine Additionally, I can't install the RPMS: rpm -Uvh heartbeat-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.i386.rpm heartbeat-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.x86_64.rpm heartbeat-pils-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.i386.rpm heartbeat-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.x86_64.rpm heartbeat-stonith-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.i386.rpm heartbeat-stonith-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.x86_64.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libperl.so is needed by heartbeat-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.i386 but perl is installed. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

How to add to EPEL wishlist?

Does anyone know how to submit wishes to the EPEL Wishlist here? http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/WishList It reads "Immutable Page". They say: "Please add packages that are part of Fedora but lack a EPEL maintainer to this list", but there is no way to do that! They don't say if "Packages part of Fedora" means "Core" or it can be Extras too, but packages obviously missing from RHEL (4 and 5) and castrating the KDE desktop include: -- JuK (it was stripped off kdemultimedia); -- Kaffeine; -- gtk-qt-engine; ... As a side note for AmaroK lovers: I am very happy with the simpler JuK on systems where I have it, and it *does* have a future, as it will be present in KDE4 too: http://www.purinchu.net/wp/2007/06/26/juk-love/ But Red Hat _hates_ KDE apps, and it even castrates official KDE packages such as kdemultimedia... CentOS 5.0 suspend to disk (hibernate)

The RHEL 5 release notes for their desktop version claim "Improved ACPI support with features such as suspend to disk" but this isn't working with CentOS 5. I've installed all the packages and updates for CentOS 5 i386 on a ThinkPad T43 but when selecting suspend, Gnome pops up a URL to a site that didn't seem to give a solution. Gnome makes an entry in /var/log/messages indicating that the suspend button was pressed, immediately followed by the "Resuming computer" message. Suspend to ram and suspend to disk work on Ubuntu 6.10 on this machine with an older kernel (2.6.17-10-generic) than CentOS 5 has. Are there some packages or a different kernel that should be installed? Will this feature be added to CentOS 5 or is it considered a server distro that doesn't need this? Thinkwiki.org mentions the swsusp program but it seems to be absent. CentOS 4 and CentOS 5 have been running well on this machine but having the suspend feature would be very nice. AX25 kernel compile help

Is there someone who can help me compile who can compile the latest kernel with ax25 and other item related to ROSE / NETRom ect. stuff for a project I am working on? I have looked at Knoppix and what not but the kernel seems to be out of date a little. I like the looks and feel of the centos format and the GUI's that CentOS has and wanted to test it out in the Amateur Radio realm. Thanks Evans F.
