CentOS 5 dual head doesn't work

I just bit the bullet and installed CentOS 5 on my work desktop, and although I have two monitors and a card that supports them, I cannot get the display configuration to work with both as a continuous (spanning) desktop. I have tried using the correct (autodetected) monitor type (digital and analog), a generic LCD with 1280x1024, nothing works. Every time I set the configuration, the X server fails to restart and I wind up with single-head monitoring (duplicate displays on both screens). Centos 5 install on BIOS RAID ie. dmraid M/B

I am experiencing hangs on the Keyboard Lang selection screen in GUI Mode install on a M/B setup with Intel BIOS SATA RAID. Workaround is to use 'linux nodmraid' switch which disables visibility of RAID volumes during drive detection of Disk Druid. Has anyone else tried this config without workarounds and success?

Hello again. Working to put Centos 5 on my old Toshiba Portege 3490ct (256Mb memory). PCMCIA CDrom and Lan card. Using 'linux askmethod' to be able to install off of my FTP server (have done 4 PC installs so far off that server successfully) It's video card is: S3 86C270-294 Savage IX/MV After recognizing the video card I get the message about no graphical install available. Putting on and external monitor does not change this. Problem with the character mode install is no LVM partition management functions. I need to alter the default partitioning. This IS an older notebook. It does have Centos 4.4 on it right now. How would I use the ftp install and specify 'acpi=no' (perhaps the old bios???). Or I could build a partial kickstart file on a diskette (add the USB diskette drive) to do the partitioning and then switch to package selection (and maybe even in graphical mode)? Some guidance here would be great.

Configuring bind

I'm new to Centos and am in the process of building a new server. On my test box, I've installed CentOS v5 x86_64. When starting bind for the first time I found that named.conf and various zone files where missing. I installed named.conf along with localdomain.zone, localhost.zone, named.broadcast, named.ca, named.ip6.local, named.local, named.zero along with a couple test domains. The problem I'm having is when I use this box as a nameserver from another box or a workstation. If at the prompt of the test box I can ping say google.com, but not from my workstation or other local development boxes when using this testbox as a nameserver. The named.conf and zone files were copied from another local development box with RH 8 installed. I am of course pointing to the test box to use as DNS server in my workstation tcp/ip config. Think of this as a motion as one might move at a meeting. Discussion and refinement are in order. I don't understand the current rationale for a single CentOS users' list; probably in times past it was sensible, but I think the time has come for splitting the list by release. I'm speaking from my own perspective, but I'm sure others have similar stories. How many users use all CentOS releases? I am not on the Fedora users' list because of the volume of email, though I do use Fedora Core and might usefully contribute to FC in that way. Similarly, I'm no longer on the OpenSUSE list, same story. The time has come when I must, again, reduce the volume of email I see, because it's clogging my modem. I use CentOS4 and plan to use CentOS5. I am interested in email for those, but not for CentOS 3 (I have no systems) nor CentOS 2 (I have one RHL 7.3 system that thinks it's CentOS 2, but it's in maintenance mode, and anything I do I will do alone). I don't know how much email I would eliminate by dropping email for Centos < C4, but when I move to CentOS 5 I will lose interest in C4 and then there will be savings. If this list were split into one for each release, then subscribers could choose which email they see. At present, it's all or none, and neither suits me. If this list is split into four, then I expect the transition method would be to subscribe everyone on this list to the new four. At some point, this would become read-only (nobody posts), or maybe all mail for this goes (via a filter to fix the headers) to all the others. By "fix the headers" I mean "do whatever it takes to ensure replies go to the list the subscriber is replying to." I'm sure this transition arrangement is imperfect; my objectives are to encourage CentOS to have the separate lists, and to ensure that the transition is fairly easy for users so we don't lose lots of subscribers. The equivalent beasty doesn't exist in the x86_64 config file. Also, I built my 2.6.21 kernel by using the Red Hat/CentOS 2.6.18-8.1.1 kernel configuration file and did a "make oldconfig" which just prompts for how to handle changes in the kernel config from the old config file version. Nothing came up about the stack size (shouldn't have the way "make oldconfig" works) so I should have the same options set for my kernel. It works but the RH/CentOS kernel doesn't. I'd prefer to stay with the standard kernel if possible but I need to be able to "fix" whatever is causing the reboot. If it's as simple as turning off some option, I can automate that.
