CentOS 5.0 and jed

Everyone, Sorry for this second post but one of the members pointed out to me I had posted it in a thread belonging to a different subject. I am trying to use CentOS 5.0 in place of SCO OpenServer 5.0 as well as replacing terminal Word Perfect. I have looked at jed which is available via the Fedora extras and it appears to have what I will need. Do any of you have an CentOS 5.0 rpm for jed or know where I might find one. Thanks, Greg Ennis

rsync problems on windows

I'm trying to use the CentOS server for windows backups. I want to use rsync to get the data over there. I downloaded cwrsync, but I'm having issues getting it to work. I keep getting: "Disconnecting: Timeout, server not responding." Has anyone seen anything like this? best practice backup

Hi there, I am using tar to backup the whole system (specific directorues usr,lib,sbin,etc,var,home,root). On bare metal recovery I install the minimal portion of the syetm and then I throw the tarballs. Any opinions? D. Karapiperis

More CentOS5 nVidia fun

In the vein of the "Can't get resolution higher than 1280x1024" and "Another CentOS 5 oddity..." threads, I just installed CentOS5 w/Xen kernel on a Sony VAIO desktop with an nVidia NV5M64 (RIVA TNT2 64 Pro) card, using an old Samsung SyncMaster 700NF monitor. system-config-display chose the highest possible resolution for the monitor and Xorg did its best to drive it, but it just isn't quite right: rhgb merely made a mess, which only sort of clears up when gdm starts. After I log in, only bits and pieces of menus and windows are painted. Rebooting single user I re-ran system-config-display and it claimed to have written 1280x1024 into xorg.conf, but in fact it didn't: it omitted the "Screen" section entirely. Rhgb was still messed up, gdm still seemed to be at some very high resolution, and then after logging in I found myself at 800x600 with no option to set the resolution higher. Three passes of switch-to-text-console-and-run system-config-display (including manually selecting my monitor) later, I finally have everything working, but only at 1024x768. If I choose any higher resolution, the repainting issues return. I won't really need the GUI very often after I get other things set up, so I'm not particularly worried about this, but I thought I'd report it for benefit of anyone else who might encounter a problem with a similar video card. I'd be interested to hear further thoughts on whether this could be a kernel issue, as suggested by Preston Crawford. (I have installed all the updates, for what that's worth).

minimum needed for x11 forwarding

Hi there - I did a minimal install of centos 5. I did not want to run a desktop on the machine, however did want to be able to forward various GUI apps through X11/ssh to a local machine. What is the minimum needed on the server for this to work? Regards, DK

[CentOS] Good things about CentOS 5; problem with flash in seamonkey

I'd like to point out that overall I am quite pleased with CentOS 5, although I am having more fun with it than I did with 4.4 and I knew less about CentOS then (duh). Most things seem to work fine, including a relatively smooth installation from the DVD image I downloaded, although the number of screensavers I can see (and this could be related to the ATI/dual head problem) is pathetically low - there are only 5 or six. Phleagh. I had no trouble reinstalling the border theme I had before, and although I don't particularly like the new main menu construction, it makes sense enough to be not too unworthwhile. I'm curious about how the suspend function works, how to reactivate (nothing seemed to work) and, most importantly, how to get it OFF the main menu. Anyway, I reinstalled Seamonkey 1.1.1, and it landed flawlessly, although I had to look to find the x86_64 version. It came without any plugins, as usual, but I have tried reinstalling the flash player plugin, and it just won't work, not even with nspluginwrapper installed. Is there some trick to this that I need to know (and what?)? Installing from working Linux partition

I've got some servers running other flavors of Linux (eg. FC2) and I'm wondering if I can install CentOS5 to a new empty partition (eg. on a new drive) while running under the old OS? It seems like the installer OS just needs some hardware sniffing ability and the ability to read the installation media and write to the target media, so in principle one should be able to install from a working system to the new partition and then update one's existing GRUB config. Is this doable or perhaps even commonly done?

Virtual Machine Manager DNS resolver

Hi all, I'm trying to install CentOS 5 as a domU in a CentOS5 dom0 system and I use Virtual Machine Manager to do it. I've dumped all CentOS5 CDs contents in /var/www/CentOS to make a local http media source. It works fine in dom0 browser. When I arrive in "Locating installation media[*]" step I point out to http://localhost/CentOS (which is perfectly active and available) resource, but the application always responds the same: Error, HTTP resource not available. I've also tried with http://127.0.0.1/CentOS but I get the same error message. ¿?¿?
