I have an application which runs on servers running everything between RH 7.3 and CentOS 4.4. My development hardware (RH 7.3) is getting long in the tooth and needs to be replaced. ok... if this can be useful for somebody. Finally, we can download the appropriate driver (cpqiss....), put it in a floppy and use it. But, ... Centos can't use it... We use a copy of RH Enterprise and all ran ok. So, Centos is not 100% compatible. And, now, RHEL don't recognize the Ethernet Card. Maybe we will buy RHEL and get the appropriate driver for being totally operative. I will keep you informed. Or, if you have a better idea. I will appreciate it. Thanks for all. I, for one, have experimented quite enough, and I am looking for a desktop distro that is good for the long haul. I currently run Kubuntu 6.06 LTS, and I like it, but I don't like the support plan. My impression is that CentOS upgrades, following the upstream vendor, are going to be more solid than those of other distros, genuinely upgradeable, and supported for a sensible length of time. And I like the tone of the mailing list. There has been a rapid increase in Linux use over a very few years. Most people will have tried Fedora, Ubuntu, SUSE, etc. for a year or two, and many will now have refined their requirement to match the CentOS virtues. The historical hit rates on DistroWatch make an interesting study, revealing not only the changes in volume of interest, but also the changes in relative popularity. CentOS came in at 62 in 2004, in 2005 it was at 15, where it stayed for 2006, but a current 30 day span brings it up to 11. I would say this indicates increased curiosity, surely the imminence of CentOS 5 cannot be a coincidence?

XEN Paravirtualized CentOS5 beta on CentOS5 beta

Dear All, I'm trying to install CentOS5 beta as paravirtualized guest on a CentOS5 Xen host using virt-manager. Everything seems to go OK. I'm able to run virt-manager and fill-out all the details. Because you can only do a http/ftp/nfs install when setting up a paravirtualized guest using virt-manager, I made the whole contents of the CentOS5 beta DVD available via ftp. The start of the system looks fine. I can provide details about networking, but then I get a screen which ask me to fill-out the CentOS install directory(is "suggests" the same directory I used in virt-manager). But whatever I use it doesn't accept it. I am confident that I provided the correct directory, because the screens show CentOS on it. Also I created the ftp install-source as per the documentation. I've also tested it with fedora core 6 as described in the screenshots on virt-manager.et.redhat.com (e.g used the same install-source: ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/6/i386/os/) but no luck there. A screenshot is attached that contain the screen I get over and over. Did anybody succeed in getting CentOS5 running as guest in CentOS5? Kind regards, Patrick

Greetings, One of our Servers has a problem. My server running Centos Blue Quartz has a bit of a problem booting. P4 3.0g processor with twin 250g hd and 1g of RAM. The boot screen is locked at: md: ...autorun DONE. acpi=no command?

Hi I am trying to install CentOS 4.4 on an hp pavilion PC. It wont install just boots in a circle, so I think I have to pass acpi=no at boot stage. Can anyone give me a detailed explanation how do this? Thanks, -- Filianx

command to ensure other command does last longer than 5 seconds

Hi, I am wondering if there exists a centos command that runs another command and ensures the second command doesnt take more than x seconds? When x is given on the command line. If the second command is not "done" the first command will just kill it and both exit. Does such a method or command exist? I just need to ensure the second command does just continue to run and run and run. Thanks, Jerry

CentOS 4 DNS Server not listening

I installed CentOS 4 on a new box to use as a DNS server. It is a basic server install. I configured named and it is all up and running fine. It just isn't listening on Port 53. It also (obviously) does not respond to DNS requests. Requests from the machine itself are processed just fine, so the service is working. It just can't be used by other machines. Not good for a public DNS server. I did install and turn on SELinux. Maybe that was a mistake? I've not worked with SELinux before. Thanks for any ideas, Michael

OT: general question re processor, l2 and l3 cache etc

Greetings Please forgive the OT question yet I highly value the experience and wisdom on this list I am wondering if anyone here can address the performance difference between having a processor board with say 256KB L2 *and* 2048KB L3 cache *VERSUS* just having the same processor board with just the L2 cache in a centos server environment... Please figure that all other necessary and related componentry is well above needed amounts and high performance specs for a professional server environment.
