Dual Opteron or Dual Xeon?

I am about to lease another server to be a backup web/mail server with a replicated mysql database. The current live server is a dual Xeon 2.8Ghz. Would I do better to get another Xeon server or an Opteron based server? My concerns are compatibility of the database and the SSL certificate currently running on the Xeon machine. Are these concerns unfounded? TIA Mike

Question about printer

Hello List, I have centos 4.3 and a printer Xerox4517 attached to it via parallel port. The problem I have is after some while of inactivity I cannot print, and when I check in the control center (KDE) I see the printer status is stopped (accepting jobs). I just have to start the printer and I can get it back to normal. It is possible to configure some kind of keep alive or something like that in order the printer doesn't go to the stopped state? I will appreciate your comments, --Ivan.

DomainKey and mailing list

Hm, my previous post on subject seem to have fallen in /dev/null (can't find it even in list archives, strange). Anyhow. While on the subject of spam control. I was playing lately with Domain Key (and also newer Domain Key Identified Mail) systems. It's currently primarly used by Yahoo and Google Mail (gmail). For example, all emails from gmail.com on this list have DomainKey-Signature header. Also, all of those emails fail the verification. It is most likely due to the mailing list mangling the Subject line (addtion of [CentOS] tag) and body of the message (addtion of footer). Currently, Google uses "in testing flag" in the DNS record (as can be seen from output of "dig beta._domainkey.gmail.com txt"), so none of those emails should be rejected by anti-spam software. However, if they change the flags to instruct anti-spam software to reject emails with invalid signatures, the emails from this (and many other) mailing lists will start bouncing big time. I guess if these systems become widespread in the future, either the mailing list will need to be updated (so that it regenerates signatures with its own key, as defined in proposed standards) or mangling of subject line and the body will have to be abandoned... Terminal settings question.

Hiya folks, Maybe someone can help me with this question. I'm a long time mutt user. However in recent years, I have been a member of an increasing number of mail lists. And an increasing number of mail list users are starting to use special characters in their emails that my terminal is not understanding correctly. When it doesn't understand the character correctly, it starts to interfere with the repaints when I scroll around through messages or through the indexes. As an example, I believe it was this list where there was recently a discussion regarding Core Duo which included a fancy symbol for (tm) in the subject line. This thread was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak and I'm now an unhappy Thunderbird user as opposed to a happy mutt user. So. Clearly I have something set incorrectly so that Mutt (and/or the terminal I am using) do not understand the special characters. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the answer as to how to fix this so that I can ditch Thunderbird and go back to Mutt? Booting kernel for installation CD

Hello, I want to install CentOS 4.4 on a Compaq Proliant DL 360. The installation fails just after booting on the first CD. Linux tries to autodetect hardware and fails with the CDROM. Here is the error message: ########################## hdc: CD-224E, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive Using cfq io scheduler ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15 ide-cd: cmd 0x5a timed out hdc: lost interrupt ide-cd: cmd 0x5a timed out hdc: lost interrupt CDROM 24x .... ide-cd: cmd 0x25 timed out ########################## I can install a RHEL4 ES on the same server whitout problem. I noticed that CentOS and RHEL use 2 different kernels to boot the 1st CD (in isolinux folder). So I tried to replace the CentOS kernel with the one I found on RHEL CD. And it works, the kernel boots, but my CentOS CD is not recognize anymore as a CentOS CD. Why CentOS didn't recognize my CDROM? What should I modify in order to install CentOS using the RHEL kernel? laptop power management problems

I've a "small" problem with returning from suspend mode on my laptop. Under Windows XP, it works perfectly. Under CentOS, it simply freezes. The thing I'm suspecting is the hard drive not spinning. Has anybody else experienced same problem, and/or have some advice? I hoped hdparm might have something usefull, but reading the man page I haven't found anything promising to try out. Another thing I attempted is to recompile kernel with support for user mode suspend (or something like that) that I heard should work very nicely (not dependent on BIOS or anything, purely implemented in Linux). However, the rebuild of centosplus kernel with that option enabled simply failed with bunch of errors. It's an older laptop that uses APM (no ACPI). I'm not sure what debugging information might be helpfull. Kind of clueless here. I'll be happy to provide any information needed though.

Global Address Book on Centos4.0

hey friends, I am using postfix on Centos4.0 as mailserver. I am looking for a global address book solution means every email client in my network whether outlook, outlookexpress, thunderbird, kmail, evolution etc. can find the user's email ids from that address book. LDAP has such feature but I am not able to find any good howto or Is there any other solution ? Please let me know if you need any further inputs. Thanks & Regards Ankush Grover

Usb flashdisks automount by all users?

Hi I'm using Centos 4.3 / gnome When I plug a usb flash disk as root, the drive is automounted and the icon shows up on the desktop (nice). But with any other user when I plug any usb drive there's no icon on the desktop, and if i open computer, the icon is there but if i try to open it there's an error message saying that only root can mount that drive. I've tried some things like editing the fstab but with no success. what should i bee looking for here? thank you, Daniel

Build a shared disk, shared cpu, shared ram....supercomputing for expanding websites

Hey Group, We are trying to build a shared disk, shared cpu, shared ram....using a dell power edge servers.....which can utilize our server resource for our expanding website. We are running RHEL4 on dell power edges. Can anyone suggest any good production ready open source solution running on top of 2.6 kernel that might work for us? I have looked at openMosix which has only 2.4 kernel production ready and openSSI which has only 1.2 tested on 2.4 kernel and 1.9 still in testing. Is there any solution which can work with 2.6 kernel. Also IF POSSIBLE we would like to integrate the solution with Xen3.0.2. Need help - Install Driver for Video Capture Card

Hi everybody, I need help to install driver for video card. I have physically installed two video capture card on two different computers. Both running Linux CentOS release 4.4 (final), and kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp. The first computer is Pentium D 3.00 GHz, 1Gbyte RAM. The second computer is AMD Athlon 2800+, 1 Gbyte RAM. I succesfully installed opencv-0.9.7 on both computers with gtk+ 2.x, libjpeg, zlib, libpng, libtiff, ffmpeg, dc1394, raw1394 and V4L pre-installed. Opencv running very well on both computers. I installed Hauppauge ImpactVCB (model 558) on Pentium D machine, while on Athlon machine, I installed I-O Data GV-VCP2M/PCI. After physically installing the cards, I installed the bttv-0.9.15 driver on both machine according to the instru8ction given by : http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/BTTV.html, with exception that I did not recompile the kernel as instructed if the machine does not has the videodev.o, bttv.o, and tuner.o. Both machines do not have the files mentioned above. After completed installation, I could capture videos through the cards on both machines. However, if i restarted the machines, I could not capture any video anymore. I have to repeat the process of loading the modules as follow: - sync; sleep 1; sync - modprobe videodev - modprove bttv Would anyone help me solve this problems. I already write in the modprobe.conf file the following: Pentium D machine: alias char-major-89 i2c-dev options i2c-core i2c=debug=1 options i2c-algo-bit bit=test=1 alias char-major-81 videodev alias char-major-81-0 bttv option bttv card=10 Athlon machine: alias char -majorp-81 alias char-major-81 bttv options bttv card=2 I really do not remember where I got the codes, and I also not very sure whether they are correct or not.
