2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp

Hi, I currently have a few CentOs 4.X servers running the latest stock 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp kernel. I notice kernel.org are now up to version 2.6.18 and many people are using the 2.6.17.11 Does anyone have any opinions with regards to the 17.11 and .18 kernels? I'm led to believe the latest centos stock kernels are the same anyway as are the backported Redhat ones. I'd be interested to read other peoples take on this, I note CentOs do not advocate anything other than the yum release and I was advised in the CentOs IRC channel to use the recommended version. I also do not want to end up constantly updating insecure kernels, although unfortunately there are always going to be vulnerabilities posted I'd like to minimize maintenance. Thanks Stephanie

Problem installing Centos on laptop

Hi, I have been trying to install Centos 4.4 on my laptop with no success. I have just purchased a new Acer 5100 laptop with AMD Turion 64x2 1Gig ram 120Gig HD. I have tried the 64bit and the 32 bit versions but have the same problem with both of them. I can do the complete install but when the computer reboot it will hang on the hardware detection on the network right after where it says Centos 4.4 final. I have let it sit for about 20min and it won't pass that point. I have also tried Fedora code 5 with the same results. Ubuntu 6.06.1 64 bit installs and works fine but will lock up randomly and requires a hard reboot. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks Scandog

To redirect any message into /dev/null

Hi all, I'm running a script in my crontab like this: */50 * * * * /root/scripts/keepjobrun 2>&1 > /dev/null However, crontab always sends a message to root (me) about the above script. How do I stop it from sending any notification? Missing dependencies

I tried to update my Centos with yum update as I have done in the past, but this time I received a list of dependencies. This is a new experience for me and I would appreciate any help/suggestions. CentOS4 u4 - Dell PE 1950 - SAN/NAS High Load

Hi I have a pair of 1950's running as a failover pair of front ends for a Fibre array and a SCSI array. i am currently just running on the SCSI array and the fibre is not in production yet. I am seeing load on the active node sit at around 8 and throughput to the SCSI array is around 25MB/s - I would imagine i should see better figures that this and less machine load. Can anyone give any pointers as to where to start looking to pinpoint this issue? A vmstat gives me.. Hello, Try to install centos with minimum of everything (text mode no hardware detection), if it doesn't help trace logs. Last entry in logs before will hangup is most important. Then look on google for solution of that particular problem. Bullet proof cron job???

I have a cron job that runs once a day. There are times when it runs that it disrupts other things on the computer, so I want to kill it. Under Mandriva I had no problems killing the process, and that was the end of that. Under Centos I cannot kill it with a sig 15 or a sig 9. Tonight the process would have trashed hours of work, so after spending two minutes as root trying to kill the process, I ended up killing the entire tree, including crond. Linux is supposed to allow CONTROL of things like this without rebooting, etc, so why can't I kill the process without killing crond? Ted Miller

Need advice please

Hi All, I have a system running (home based) Centos latest fully patched, etc that is acting as quasi mail server dhcp and name server. My question deals with mail. This is how it is currently set up. Because I travel for work weeks on end, I have fetchmail on my mail server, set up to poll my isp and download all my mail from work and personal isp. In this way my mail queues at work and personal isp are not piling up. I then use (at home and away) my own email client (kmail) to pop my home server for mail through an ssh tunnel. Does anyone know of a way that I can somehow combine some kind of spam filtering in conjunction with fetchmail on my home mail server so that when I pop it only the spam free email returns to my client? I know that kmail also filters out spam but I would also like a crack at getting some of the spam cleaned out at my mail server end as well. Thanks for your help with this, Phil

eAccelerator RPM for php5

Does anybody know where I can find an RPM of eAccelerator for the php 5.0.4-5 in CentOS Plus REPO? RPMFORGE has an eAccelerator rpm, but for php4. If not, is there an easy/better way to provide php speed up with php5.0.4-5? If not, would it be possible for a rookie, like me, to build an RPM from source? I might take a run at that as a last resort? Any simple howto links would be appreciated (I found and am exploring the ones at wiki.centos.org) Thanks to the CENTOS developers and affiliates for the great software. JT
