slightly off topic - virtual PC options

I have a this new AMD X2 4800+ x86_64 box that works great and runs centos 4.3 x86_64 like a champ. I have 4 old machines running slackware, redhat 7.3 and redhat 9 and centos 4.3 i386. I would like to take the image of the disk (or something else equivalent) and run some kind of i386 emulation on the X2 box so I can run those old images when I need to and scrap the 4 old boxes. Heat and noise be gone! I have see Xen, qemu, user mode linux, bochs etc... Have others tried to do something like I am trying, take images from older machines and run then on NEW iron? Are there suggested steps somewhere that I have not found? I have tried qemu but I cant boot the image. Just wondering if I am going about this is the right fashion? Thanks, Jerry

Intel VT-x & Xen

Hi All, Just curious if anyone is currently using Xen 3on any of the new Intel Xeon processors that support the VT-x extentions. With the VT-x (or AMD's Pacifica) you can run unmodified guest operating systems...so we are looking into buying a new server to run a few virtual machines of CentOS & a few with Windows. Just looked at the log from the x86_64 machine and I see the same zcat: stdout: Broken pipe in the 00-makewhatis.cron job as on the x86 machine. Broken pipe

I updated my x86 machine day before yesterday, and I noticed two things. The clamav user and group was deleted, and not recreated, and when the makewhatis ran, I got a page full of "zcat: stdout: Broken pipe" entries. What gives with the makewhatis and clamav? Was clamav removed from the software? I encountered no errors when the transaction check and transactions were run. I need to do the same thing, and can't get sendmail to email within my domain. I can send emails outside my company, but not to an internal SMTP server. I'm working on a small perl script that will do what I need - inject email into my internal SMTP server, with attachments. I need simple email notification when cronjobs finish... Are we ever going to see a CentOS store?

So I was sending some money off to Firefox today for a hat. And I was thinking, I haven't donated money to CentOS yet. It's just sitting here, running. It's acting as a web server, mail server, mail filter, spam filter, samba and print server and many other things. More importantly, it's done its job so consistently for so long that sometimes I basically forget about it. I run Yum once in a while and otherwise I leave it. For so many years I upgraded every 6 months. Red Hat 6 through 7.1, I think. Mandrake 8 to 9. SuSE 8 to 9.1. Fedora Core 1 and 2. Finally I stumbled on CentOS and I haven't touched my OS substantially in quite some time. So I donated finally today. Just a little. Hopefully more later. But I figured while I was at it I'd say a couple things. #1 - Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I don't think that gets said enough. But to those of you who make this happen, thank you. You almost take it for granted sometimes when you have a distro that is so stable and consistent that you barely have to think about it. Your efforts, while sometimes forgotten because of how consistent they are, aren't forgotten. And thanks to Red Hat as well. :) #2 - We need some CentOS schwag. Shirts, hats, maybe a place where someone like me would happily put down the money for some printed documentation and an official DVD. I know all of that stuff comes with a cost and a price, but I'd love to see it happen someday and would gladly snap up some CentOS gear. Great distro. Keep up the excellent work. Preston

The only time you'll need to upgrade the vm_mod module is if it won't load into a newer kernel. When you run vmware-config.pl, it'll tell you so and prompt you to create a new module. Error on update

Just did an update with yum, and got this error when running the transaction check. Transaction Check Error: package freetype-2.1.9-1.2.2.el4.rf (which is newer than freetype-2.1.9-1.rhel4.4) is already installed Yum then quit. What do I need to do to fix this error? This is a first for me. x86-64 machine. Thanks....... Sam

Using XFS filesystem (on install)
