RPM conflicts - help!

I'm building a database/application server with a Dual-Opteron 64 bit system. I need to run PHP4, Apache, and Postgres 8.1, but I'm having conflicts with Postgres 8.1 and PHP 4 that comes with CentOS. History: 1) I installed Apache and PHP with yum. 2) I then installed PostgreSQL 8.1 RPMs from the PG website. 3) Then, I tried to install php-pgsql with yum - and it didn't work, complaining about pgsql.so.3. So, I installed with --nodeps and symlinked the /usr/lib64/libpq.so.4 -> /usr/lib64/libpq.so.3. Now, PHP and PGSQL work without any problems. But now, I can't do a yum update - it still complains about pgsql.so.3! What can I do to resolve this? RPMS's rebuilt or upstream one's used Hi I got a cleanly reinstalled 4.2 workstation. However i still needed to build the following SRPMS from Mandriva/Fedora :- - Chkrootkit - Logcheck - Tripwire - Xboard & Gnuchess - Rkhunter I needed to use the upstream versions of :- - OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 - RealPlayer Gold - Acrobat Reader I needed to tweak Bind chroot to log queries and adopt a BSD style UID>1000. All redhat-based systems come with the inevitable tonne of services on by default. Is this the same situation with everyone else? I know Karanbir produces some home made rpm' but obviously not all of the above. Dag's repo is also cool but not as extensive as Fedora Extras. I have an x86_64 box. I have a program I need to compile with the 32 bit compiler and linker. Are there directions explaining how to do that somplace? Or can someone provide details. THanks, Jerry

yum vs rpm

If I have a local rpm file, what is the difference between running "rpm -i" and "yum localinstall"? When I do "rpm -i", I can still see the info via "yum info", so is there a difference? -- Bowie

Unknown CUPS Signature

Updating a 3.6 installation and during the CUPS update I get: "The package cups-1.1.17-13.3.34 is signed with an unknown GPG signature. Continue?" Said no for the moment. weird problem with outgoing connections

After migrating to centos 4, Im having a weird connection problem with online games, Planeshift and Anarchy Online. Im using my own firewall script, that was working fine before installing Centos. I disabled default firewall. Can somebody give me an idea about whats happening? -- Roger D. cyrus idled not in the cyrus-imapd rpm?

Hi I successfully installed cyrus + postfix on my centos 4.2 box. When trying to make imap idle working, I noticed that there is no idled executable in the rpm. Do I have to recompile cyrus from source to get idled working? Thanks

Kerberos and Winbind both needed for Active Directory??

When configuring CentOS 4 to authenticate (for all things, such as ssh and samba shares) against Active Directory is it necessary to check both the Kerberos and Winbind options under "Authentication," or is Winbind alone sufficient (since winbind uses kerberos)? When I have attempted to get this working, I was only able to do it with both kerberos and winbind selected. The other problem I had was that I had to have a local account with the same username. I am sure it is something very small that I am missing, but I just can't figure it out. Any comments or suggestions are highly appreciated.

I think WS will work for what I'm doing, it's just a reference build/environment and not production. It will be interesting to see if CentOS can in fact be used for Tivoli Storage Manager, not so much on the OS side, but if IBM's products actually detect the fact that it's not the "real thing". One thing I did find with their Integrated Solutions Console (ISC) was that it seems to read /etc/redhat-release to determine something... Wasn't paying attention to the system calls all that closely, but I did see open(), fseek() and close() on it.
