Installing CentOS via HTTP

When, after starting the install, you get a list of places for the distribution, listing things like: CDrom, NFS, FTP, HTTP, Local hard drive What is expected on the HTTP url? The ISO images? Help please, as the system I am installing on, boots off of CDrom, but then the CDrom seems to be so old (Toshiba NW24XCD), that there is no Linux driver for it in the base install. And I cannot figure out how to get it to read from the CD, but I DO have LAN access....

DELL SC430 + CentOS 4.0 + SATA HDDs

Dear gurus, Three DELL SC430s were purchased by my company a few months back and I've been told that when they spoke with the DELL representatives, they were informed that these servers were fully RHEL 4.0 compatible. Specs of the servers:- - Pentium 4 - 2.8 GHz - 1 GB RAM - 2x 250GB SATA HDDs I tried installing CentOS 4.0 on it but it doesn't seem to be able to detect any hard disks. Has anyone out there successfully installed CentOS 4.0 on a Dell SC430? Please help. Your guidance is greatly appreciated. TIA, Andrew

To do a HTTP install you need a mounted ISO image. What we have set up here is a yam repository to do all our updating plus installations. http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/yam/ It works great for us and cuts down on internet traffic. Our yam box syncs off a centos mirror and we pull all our updates from the local repository. Belkin F5D6050 USB Wireless in CentOS 4.2

Is anyone successfully using a Belkin F5D6050 USB Wireless in CentOS 4.2? If so, what driver are you using? Did you have to do anything special to make it work? At this point, I have downloaded, compiled installed and loaded the latest drivers from http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net but lvnet is unable to find my adapter. I've tried every driver module that it created, and still no luck. Any tips, info or hints would be appreciated. Thanks, Barry

Compilation problem - CentOS 4.2 - x86_64

Hi list, Here it is: I have compiled with no problem courier-imap-4.0.4 on this arch (x86_64). Now I want to update my install with 4.0.6. I want to do this because the server is not yet in a production state, so if a major flaw affects courier-imap in the future, I could react more quickly. And indeed I'm encountering problems with the make process (Since I initialy build courier-imap from sources and that I dont want FAM, I'm not using the rpmbuild process). I've stricly followed the INSTALL's instructions. I believe the problem comes from the mixed libraries living on the system (x86_64 and, for compatibility purpose, i386) and I didn't find a workaround on this. I'm near to switch to dovecot if it can handle quite large amount of users (500-1000 accounts). That would be bad because I think courier-imap is well doing its job. By the way, someone tolds me that courier-imap and RHEL4 (and clones) is a bad idea, someone can confirm? Install problems for a Toshiba NW24XCD

I am trying to install Centos on my old Portege 2490CT. Actually a pretty good box, but it does not support USB booting. Only HDD, FDD (interestingly a USB device), 'CD-Rom', or LAN. The only CDroms I have is a nice USB drive and an old PCMCIA toshiba NW24XCD drive. I have not gotten this system to boot off of my USB CDrom. It will boot of the NW24XCD. So I put the CentOS disk 1 in the drive and boot. Boot seems to go OK, it asks my the language preferences but then gives me the dialog: What type of Media contains the packages to be installed? When I select CDrom I get the dialog: Unable to find may devices of the type neededfor this installation type. Would you like to manually select your driver or use a driver disk? And there is a list of a bunch of drivers. I have a hunch that my PCMCIA NW24XCD is not a standard supported drive. :( So what from the list do I select? Or where do I get a driver disk? POI: I am not a Unix skilled person. I can get by with VI and the like, but otherwises I just have not devoted the time needed... HELP?

failed yum upgrade aftermath

greetings i am helping a sight impaired friend with an really old 96 meg ram computer that he uses for asterisk pbx he loaded it... amazing for a blind person... and he wants me to secure it as best i can... it had a failed (lost remote connection) yum update on centos 4.x and i am trying to finish... what do i need to do to get past this part (below) now? my apologies as i do not know how to specifically massage the machine or yum data areas to get out of here intact and finish the update... my apologies. info below... SMB server with CentOS 4

Hi, I need to set up a small server for a group of ~10 employees (all using Windows 2000/XP, used to use a windows 2000/exchange setup). I have a linux server already running CentOS 4, so I'd like to do all I can with this. I thought about using Samba for file/print sharing and OpenXchange (commercial version) to have a nice collaborative/mail/calendar/etc server. Of course, it would probably be the dhcp and internal DNS server. I started reading the Samba doc, but it is rather long. I planned on using this server as a PDC so that it is not too different from using their former windows 2000 server. I'll be managing this server, which is currently a staging server for web development (php/mysql/cvs). Anyone has a opinion on this, or better ideas? My backups will be based on utilities and mondorescue, kept on a internal (cold-swap drawer) hard-drive that I would take every week (2-drawers rotation). scsi tape device support

I'm trying to get a scsi tape device (Sony SDX-D500V) working on my dell 2450 running centos 4.2. I can see the device (ch1, id2) using the dell bois raid utility, but once booted into linux I can't see any mention of it in the logs or dmesg. Do you know if the generic kernel (2.6.9-22.0.1.ELsmp) supports this tape device? Can anyone give me any pointers in getting this device working. Regards, Marc
