In any case, this question is moot now as I have rebuilt from the official packages. How to select a motherboard

Not being familiar with chip sets and other factors that "hardware experts" understand, I am perplexed with the multitude of available motherboards. Is there a Web site that can be of help or a "strategy"? My goal is to replace my motherboard with one that is Centos compatible and uses a Pentium 4 in the 2 MHz range. You may have to find drivers for an oddball video or sound chipset. On-board raid you are probably better off ignoring and using software raid instead. I usually look for boards from Asus or Abit. Intel boards are good as well, but usually don't have as many features and don't perform as well on the benchmarks. You may want to check out Newegg.com. They've got good prices and selection and quite a few customer reviews on the popular products. Bowie

I've started seeing these lines in my daily logs. Don't recall when they started, but I know for 2 days now. csgfs repo problem

I just took a brand new CentOS 4.2 x86_64 install, updated all of the base packages with yum, and then added the csgfs repo and attempted to install those packages. When I do the installation, I have a problem with one package: # yum install perl-Net-Telnet [ snip ] ============================================================================ = Package Arch Version Repository Size ============================================================================ = Installing: perl-Net-Telnet noarch 3.03-3 csgfs 51 k [ snip ] Package perl-Net-Telnet-3.03-3.noarch.rpm is not signed I know I can set gpgcheck=0 in the repo definition, but shouldn't this be fixed in the repo? Is there another way to specifically allow this one package to install without turning off gpg checks for the entire repo? Bowie

Modules installed in the wrong directory

I did a yum install of modules from the CentOS-csgfs repository (GFS-kernel, cman-kernel, etc). Modprobe does not find the modules. Upon investigation, I found that modprobe is looking in: /lib/modules/2.6.9-22.0.1.ELsmp/ while the package files were installed to: /lib/modules/2.6.9-22.0.1.EL/ Can I tell modprobe to use those modules somehow? Are modules for the smp kernel available? Or do I need to get the source rpms and recompile for the smp kernel myself? Bowie

Once it is up, I just let it run and run...nothing special. Most motherboards have "fake RAID" built-in. Have you tried going into the bios and setting those channels to standard IDE? If you bypass the raid, CentOS should be able to recognise the disks and install. If you still want raid, do it via software. Bowie

Yeah, we've had several generations of intel motherboards that we've used for desktops with Centos (EL4), Tao (EL3), and Red Hat before that (815, 845, 865, 915, and we're eval-ing a 945-based system right now). For the most part, they Just Work (tm). Intel's alsa drivers don't work with the (newest) 945 system.
