Yum issues with swatch

I am trying to install swatch via yum but it doesn't recognize swatch as being available. I have tried various naming conventions such as swatch-3 etc but still no go. I have Dags repo in yum.conf and I see it listed there on his webpage. In addition, I did a yum search swatch and still nada. Anyone have an idea as to why it will not install? I'm running CentOS 3.5 Thanks, Ed

CBQ and/or HTB help needed

Ok, this has been kicking my @$$ for weeks. I'm trying to get some kind of bandwidth shaping working on my server. I need to throttle ftp down so as not to suck up all the available bandwidth. I had cbq working on the old server (an ancient RH 6.2 box) so I figured I'd just move the config over and get cbq.init from sf.net and it should work. Unfortunately it doesn't. At least it doesn't work to the extent that no throttling of ftp is being done. So next I thought I'd try htb (as someone here mentioned it as an alternative). After printing out the entire section on bandwidth management from the lartc documentation I still can't seem to get anything working. I think I'm at the "forest/trees" point where I've been banging my head against this so much I'm missing something obvious. So, if anyone out there could lend a hand (or more precisely a pair of eyes) I would be greatly appreciative. To save list bandwidth, send replies to me and once I get things working I'll post a summery, with full credit attribution, to the list. As much as some would mind me recommending another solution on the CentOS list, I feel I must. Consider IPCop 1.4. It is a "Linux from scratch" distro (no longer Red Hat Linux based as of 1.3.0 I believe, maybe it was 1.2.0?). ========================================================================== Bryan, IPCop installed and working fine. Software RAID setup ideas and an apology.

The apology first. If I've offended anyone, or just annoyed anyone, I apologize for that. I sometimes can go 'off the deep end' when I'm being sarcastic (an old habit from my news.admin days when I ran a Usenet site in the early 90's), and I'll try to not go into news.admin mode here in the future. Now, the question. I have a few ideas about how to do this, but am not sure of the ideal way of doing it. It has to be a pretty common thing to do, so I'll ask it here. I have a server (Dell PE 1600SC) with two SCSI host adapters: a U320 LSI/MPT for internal drives only, and an Adaptec 39160 with two internal and two external U160 channels. I have set up a software RAID config with LVM2 on top (CentOS 4) with four 36GB 15K RPM Ultra 3 drives. The internal drives are set up with /dev/sda and /dev/sdb partitioned with 100MB /boot (for sda) and 100MB /boot2 (backup on sdb), and the rest of each drive as mirrors on a RAID1. /dev/sdc and sdd have each a single RAID partition and are likewise mirrors in a RAID1. So I have /dev/md0 and /dev/md1, which are then two parts of a physical volume with the various logical volumes under that. This works and performs well, all things considered. Now, the 39160 HBA is attached through one of its two channels to a donated Cisco Storage Array 12 with 12 18GB drives in it. Unfortunately, the second channel of the SA12 isn't working properly (it automatically configures split bus for the array if the second channel is activated), so I'm limited to a single channel with 12 drives on it. I have the hardware portion of this working, all drives are recognized, etc both at the Adaptec BIOS level and at the Linux kernel level (/dev/sde through /dev/sdp). My question is, what is the opinion of those on the list with experience in this area as to the 'best' method of joining these drives. I would like to be able to lose two or more drives and still have redundancy; I had thought about pairing drives in RAID1's and LVM over the array; and I had thought about a big RAID5. But I don't want to shoot performance through the foot, either. I don't have a good hardware RAID controller for this box, so that's not at this point an option (I have some hardware RAID controllers, but the ones that work ok with this array have much slower SCSI busses, and the boot up behavior of this particular array causes the good RAID controllers I do have with Ultra 3 interfaces to go crazy (the array powers up when it receives signal from the host adapter: not each drive, but the WHOLE ARRAY powers up on command; the DPT controllers I have simply refuse to recognize any drives at all on the bus, regardless of spinup delay (I set it to 60 seconds and still no joy; the 39160 recognizes all the drives just fine))). Missing libs on install

I've run across a couple of things I'm not quite sure why, but just discovered the libtermcap.* was not installed from the CD's. I would have thought the termcap libs would be part of the base install, and in fact, when I retrieved them with yum, it does show "base" or "core". Is this just some errant behavior one time or is something broken in the install? I've also found a couple more that did not get installed, but don't recall now what they were, but being part of base, I'd again, think they should be. OS is 4.1 x86-64 My previous question did not provide any answers about dpms, so I ask again.. I have dpms enabled, but the monitor will never suspend or turn off. xset q shows dpms enabled. I've tried with and without a screensaver and still the same thing. The monitor is a Samsung 192N (supported). Any ideas? -- Snowman

yum --installroot and GPG key

Hi. When I try to use --installroot, I get the following: --- [root@machine ~]# yum --installroot=/data/xchg-2.0/ install apache2 You have enabled checking of packages via GPG keys. This is a good thing. However, you do not have any GPG public keys installed. You need to download the keys for packages you wish to install and install them. You can do that by running the command: rpm --import public.gpg.key Alternatively you can specify the url to the key you would like to use for a repository in the 'gpgkey' option in a repository section and yum will install it for you. For more information contact your distribution or package provider. --- Where is the GPG key I need to import? I've tried: [root@machine ~]# rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora [root@machine ~]# rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY [root@machine ~]# rpm --import /usr/share/doc/centos-release-4/RPM-GPG-KEY [root@machine ~]# rpm --import /usr/share/doc/centos-release-4/RPM-GPG-KEY-centos4 But no such luck... is there a utility to tell if the monitor is on or offin CentOS?

Sir, Thanks for the suggestion. However I did a xset -q | grep Monitor and it says "On". I then turned off the monitor did a cursor up to execute the last command hit enter, turned the monitor back on and it still said "On". I then unplugged the monitor, cursor up to execute last command hit enter, turned back on the monitor and it still said "On". Do you have another suggestion? Thank you. Jerry

The current state of palm syncing on Linux?

I've been searching around on the internet trying to find out about conduits and options for syncing programs with my Palm Pilot device. Google searches turn up a lot of discussion on the matter over a two or three year period, everything from people talking about doing it or how it should be done or how much they want it done. But I can't actually determine what, if any, tangible projects are out there for doing any kind of Palm syncing. The two programs I would most like to sync with my Palm are Thunderbird (just the addresses, not the email) and GnuCash (via FreeCoins?). It would seem I'm not the only one who would like to do this, and there are tantalizing hints that there are possibly conduits either in development or beta for doing this. But I seem to be wading neck deep in lots of online forum discussion that is obscuring my path to finding out what the actual status is. Is there anyone on this list who knows what is possible as far as syncing with a Palm Pilot goes, where I might find concrete answers, and/or how I might best configure it on my system? Dave
