CentOS 4, booting into gnome I noticed the line "starting the red-hat network monitor" flash up.
I do not know if this is a no-no or not.

Just a thought, but is that for the Red Hat Network icon that comes up in the panel or is it for the actual system service called NetworkMonitor that starts on boot?

It is for the up2date-gnome app that comes on in the panel. On CentOS this does not connect to RHN, but checks the yum repositories configured in up2date.
