I can't get my HP DeskJet D2345 (USB) to work on my CentOS 5.3 machine. It'll work on another machine (with Fedora 7).
I compared the installation details (in CUPS http://localhost:631) - seems that Cent does not have the driver. On the F7 machine, the device is "D2345 (HP D2300 series)" and the driver is "HP DeskJet D2300 Foomatic/hpijs". When I try to config my Cent machine for this printer, I don't see that driver anywhere in the list.
I searched cups.org for D2345 and D2300 - no joy.
Can I merely copy some file (the driver?) to the Cent machine? (If so, where would I find it?)
Or, how do I get this printer to work with CentOS 5.x?
* Details * On the Cent box, I tried using the "HP DeskJet" (generic?) driver. But, when I tell it to print (in an app or even a test page from cups), the computer seems to go thru the motions, but the printer doesn't respond at all (no noises, nothing). Indeed, cups even states that the job is completed.
When I plug the printer into the Cent box, the message log reports: Mar 27 16:02:02 sr1220 kernel: usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 7 Mar 27 16:02:02 sr1220 kernel: usb 3-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Mar 27 16:02:02 sr1220 kernel: drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 7 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0xC302
When I tell CUPS to print a test page, several lines are issued in the CUPS log; here are a few: I [27/Mar/2010:16:04:47 -0400] [Job 14] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops (PID 5297) I [27/Mar/2010:16:04:47 -0400] [Job 14] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip (PID 5298) I [27/Mar/2010:16:04:47 -0400] [Job 14] Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal (PID 5299) I [27/Mar/2010:16:04:49 -0400] [Job 14] Completed successfully. Try the ppd file here: http://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-DeskJet_D2300

Apparently, you can't download just a ppd file. :/ It seems like I'd have to download the whole hplip package (basically upgrade).
The F7 box (where the printer works) has version 1.7.4 of hplip; CentOS 5.3 comes with 1.6.7. My printer requires v 1.6.6. I found the ppd files - the Cent box looks about right, compared to the F7 box (same files, etc.)
So, I'm wondering if I should just dl the latest and greatest hplip (v 3.10, I think). (Btw, this is just for home use.) Or, perhaps 5.3 can't handle that, and I should find v 2?
I tried HP's utilities - [mykolas@sr1220 HP]$ hp-check ... Checking for application dependencies... Checking ghostscript... --> Version 8.15.2 Checking gcc... error: Not found!
** Is that bad?
[mykolas@sr1220 HP]$ hp-check -g |more ... Is there some special reason you don't update to 5.4 and see if that helps? If it's just your home machine, that shouldn't be too much of a stretch....
Or did you misstate your CentOS revision - 5.4 comes with hplip 1.6.7, too?

I didn't really think about updating; 5.3 works OK. Well, that is, unless 5.4 would fix this.

No - I know it's 5.3.

Well, if you can show me where to get a ppd file, I'd really appreciate it! (I checked openprinting.org, linuxfoundation.org, and hplipopensource.com - nothing about 'ppd file'.) Or, can I really customize what I have?
don't know about that one but possibly not a problem. If it's a problem, it would seem that you have defined a printer that it can't talk to.
I configged it the same way on the F7 box, and it works fine. I'm boggled - why wouldn't it work on the Cent box?

Yes - and I stated that I couldn't find any ppd files (and I listed the sites that I checked). Perhaps I somehow completely missed them?
