at the risk of picking at that scab a bit longer, i'm going to toss out a comment regarding people still waiting for the public availability of centos 5.4.
here:
http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2009-October/083743.html
we read:
"The last status (from twitter) is 2 days old with the '5.4 is baked! centos internal network will start syncing up today. Release ~ soon!'. Any ETA?"
followed by the response:
"Just relax and wait, this is a _volunteer_ based project. Want a release date? Go pay for RHEL."
not to put too find a point on it, but that reply is more than a bit dickish. it doesn't *matter* if it's a volunteer project. as i see this, this is turning into an issue of credibility.
once someone posts that the 5.4 release is allegedly "baked" and syncing is beginning, then it's not unreasonable that people will start getting anxious to see it hit the mirrors. and as the days go by, it's not unreasonable for those people to start wondering what the heck is going on.
again, whether people are being paid to do any of this work is not relevant. it's important, from the perspective of reputation, that everyone see the centos project as being efficiently and competently run, and making what *appears* to be an announcement of completion and the beginning of syncing servers, followed by days of awkward silence and increasingly defensive rhetoric, is not the way to do it. it just looks bad.

Agreed. The best policy would be to simply say -- "It'll be done when it's done." Of course they tried that originally, and that's wasn't "acceptable" either.
Here's the way I'm going to take care of the "problem." Figure eight weeks out for CentOS from the time Red Hat is released. If it gets done quicker than that, I've got a bonus.!

...and ignore any "announcements" in the meantime, as they may be red-herrings? Take a "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude?
That is the logical direction to take, but I must say it doesn't sound too good when I read it back.
amusingly, only 41 minutes ago, this from centos twitter:
"we ran into a few issues on internal centos.org machines - all resolved now :) we should start seeding to external mirrors shortly"
and *that's* what i was talking about -- we just want to be kept informed. thanks.

About ten minutes after your email, I got one from our local computer shop.
"Windows 7 coming soon!!!" no date. no reason. Just churn.

Windows 7 will be out on the 22nd Oct 2009. Your local computer Shop did not try hard enough to find this out?

I think the store's aim was to generate a "Cool. When?" response from clients to draw them into the store so a sales rep could schmooze more money out of the client. :) Future Shop, a large Canadian electronics retailer, does this all the time.
I am burning the DVD ISO image to disk right now. It is available from some mirrors.

which are mostly incomplete... maybe some isos are ok but even the centos.org machines are not yet in sync...
I would strongly suggest that you wait for the actual announcements, but ymmv.

Irrespective of the discussions about the release procedure and visibility, etc, I'd like to thank everyone that put effort into making the CentOS 5.4 release happen..
I know I won't be alone in wishing to express thanks.

i've checked a couple dozen random mirrors, and have yet to find it. i'm almost tempted to ask, "any idea on when 5.4 will be available?", but i just *know* that would get me in trouble.

i'm going to echo an earlier sentiment and say that, as much as i grouse about this release confusion and frustration, i appreciate the efforts of the centos folks and maybe i should stop grousing and volunteer to help out.
just FYI, my impatience at getting my hands on 5.4 is based on the fact that i'm scheduled to teach a small class next month on RHEL, and the students are indifferent as to whether it's actual RHEL or centos, and they're also good with it being 5.3 or 5.4, so i was hoping to get centos 5.4 ASAP and play with it just to make sure i'm comfortable with the changes.
if i teach off of 5.3, it's not a big deal, but 5.4 would just be a bit more fun.

If you had try harder and try them all, you should be able to find these mirrors with 5.4 in them.

If you would try harder you'd notice that at least two of these are incomplete.

Hi,
I could download from the following torrents: http://sunsite.rediris.es/mirror/CentOS/5.4/isos/x86_64/CentOS-5.4-x86_64-bi... http://sunsite.rediris.es/mirror/CentOS/5.4/isos/i386/CentOS-5.4-i386-bin-DV...
The download was very quick, maybe because I'm now on business trip in London, where I believe there is a strong CentOS community.
I installed the x86_64 in a virtual machine (KVM on Fedora 11 x86_64) and did the media check.
I'm now seeding (reasonably) from the overpriced internet connection in the hotel room :)
Many many thanks to the CentOS developers and the community,
Mathieu
