You should probably try 'system-config-display --reconfig'. It may be that your current xorg.conf has something not parse-able in it, the --reconfig switch starts from scratch. Worth a try, anyway. Remember, paranoia is a good thing, make a copy of your xorg.conf first!
Jay: Thank you for that! I had a very brief fling with FC6 and had terrible problems with xorg.conf, which I tried to fix with system- config-display I will try to remember the --reconfig if I run into that again.
