Hi,
I have CentOS4 and this soundcard: 00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)
I installed the Skype rpm for Fedora3 and it works but the quality of my voice is very poor: volume is low and the voice sound doesn't have the high frequencies.
Did any of you made Skype work perfectly under CentOS4? How?
Thanks, Adrian
I used to have to have such problems. Open up a console when logged in init 5 and run kmix. This is the audio related application. Fire up your mic and increase the volume. Perhaps this is the reason why your voice volume is too poor. In case you have not installed KDE, as this is a KDE appa (I think), there shoud be something like this for gnome. Best Luck,
Unfortunately thi micrphone volume is at the max and the problems are still there ... :( Other ideas?

I'm sure you've considered this, but...
Are you certain it's not a physical hardware issue with that particular mic? Have you tested the mic on another device just to make sure it works correctly?
Cheers,

The alsa driver may not do full duplex for your soundcard - you will need Full Duplex to be able to speak - listen at the same time - Otherwise all converstaions will be one way only.

No. I have the same problem although I am running Fedora Core 2.
I tried using another soundcard, a Creative one. No joy.
It has something to with Linux and the VIA chipset (my sound subsystem is a C-Media solution) and there are quite a few problems under Linux for a variety of hardware in their interactive with the VIA chipset.
My advice is to avoid VIA chipset motherboards. The thing works in Windows due to 'tuned' drivers. Unfortunately, it does not appear that that kind of thing is going to happen in the Linux side of things. Maybe the latest offerings from VIA are better but I don't know.
