looking for how to check processes from the process table of a remote machine. i want to be able to automate the process. i'd prefer to be able to have a cron process to periodically check the status..
any thoughts/comment/ideas would be helpful...

I think "nagios" is the answer. See http://wiki.centos.org/Nagios_on_CentOS_4.x.
