Hello everyone,
I have been scouring the Internet for answers, wikipages, non-Centos pages, and I am stumped.
I have a HP LaserJet P4014n. When I plugged it in via USB cable, it found it as a P4014, but in any case, it simply wouldn't print, so I deleted it, and tried to start from scratch.
When I manually add the printer, it seems all is well, but it won't print a test page. In my CUPS error_log file, I see:

I just saw that. I now have it so that it prints a few pages, then locks up the printer. Funny, it worked just fine under CentOS5, now under CentOS 6, it won't? That's weird. Do you, or anyone else, have any suggestions?

Have you tried different printer drivers other than the one that's "recommended"?

How about HPLIP? if you do not have it installed, I'd recomment doing so before trying other drivers. it should "just work".

Using HPLIp...it's been years since I have set up a printer on CentOS. Is that using the localhost:631 website? Tried that, still got the same result.

localhost:631 is used for cups administration. This isn't directly related to hplip.

same result.

I just found the problem. The firmware on the printer was from January 20, 2011. I went to HP's website and noticed a massive firmware update from December of 2014. I downloaded the .zip file, unzipped it to get the .rfu file needed to update. And then I did:
cat ljP4000fw_04.221.6.rfu > /dev/usb/lp0
This upgraded my printer to a December 30, 2014 firmware update, and now...printing works fine!
Sorry for the bother, everyone. As one person here told me, "if it's not a firmware issue, it's a CUPS configuration issue."
Yep...

Having an HP P1505, I understand how frustrating this can be -- mine uses firmware also. On my last Linux setup, I had to mess with udev settings to get the darn firmware to load when the printer was turned on, and make a bunch of permission changes to allow normal users to "use" the printer including the firmware download and install -- well actually WHEN I pushed the button to turn the printer on.
When everything worked fine out of the box with CentOS 6.6, and now 6.7, I considered this a miracle! Anyway, on to your situation...
Ok, more questions. What's your DM and WindowManager. Mine works fine with an XDG sesstion and Gnome 2.8 desktop.
Did you install hplip? Did you run hp-setup? Did you add hp-systray to your startup apps.
Normally, I do not have my printer turned on. When I do turn it on, there are basically TWO refresh cycles -- let's call them once to initialize the device to your system; and the second is the firmware download. If you don't hear that one, your printer is NOT ready.
You should be able to use the HP app to check on status, download firmware, etc. This should happen automatically once the firmware is loaded ONCE.

No, 631 is for access to the web server built into CUPS.
HPLIP is a printer driver toolkit provided by HP that installs and manages the "official" HP drivers for (nearly) all their printers, on Linux systems.
try "yum install hplip".
I've got four hplip packages, I don't recall if the above command grabs them all or not, so here's what I've got installed:
hpijs.x86_64 1:3.13.7-6.el7 @anaconda hplip.x86_64 3.13.7-6.el7 @base hplip-common.x86_64 3.13.7-6.el7 @anaconda hplip-gui.x86_64 3.13.7-6.el7 @base hplip-libs.x86_64 3.13.7-6.el7 @anaconda
note there's also a hpijs package. don't know if you need it or not, but you might!
good luck!

Do you have hplip installed? For my CentOS 6.7, I have hplip 3.14.6. In the past, what has worked best for me it use the hp-setup utility from hplip. It does interface fine with cups. I also use the hpgui (I added it to my startup apps). From that you can check status, start/stop state etc.
