hey friends,
Recently I purchased Compaq Presario SR1722IL and I tried to install Centos 4.0 on it but it started showing errors like:
Uniform CD-ROM driver revision: 3.20 Combo SOLTC-4836k ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdc: IRQ Probe failed (Oxfcfa) hdd: IRQ Probe failed (Oxfcfa) hdc: lost interrupt
I tried installing FC4 also but same problem persist. Windows 2000 & Windows XP are already installed on the same system that means the Combo Drive is working fine. Then I tried installing SUSE 10.0 with the same Combo Drive and I faced no problem except when it starts "Gnome or KDE" it shows Frequency out of range..
What is the reason that FC4 and Centos4.0 are failing with the installation? What should I do to get rid of the problem ?
Thanks & Regards

Hi,
Try to boot with noapic as a parameter (linux noapic from the prompt).
I had problems like that before when installing on a custom built pc.

you need to provide more info, like what sort of h/w is installed in that machine ?

hey,
Combo SOLTC-4836k ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Graphics Card ATI Chipset RC410 Intel Pentium IV 2.93 Processor 512 RAM DDR2 Kingston Agere Modem (Internal) Realtek High Definition Audio Bluetooth and S-Video Enabled Compaq 7540 17" Monitor
Even SUSE 10.0 is having problem with the frequency range of monitor ("Frequency Out of Range").
Please let me know if you need any further inputs.

Why not try first to run X with driver setting as vesa and 800x600 resolution. Thereafter increase resolution and try with proper drivers.

what is the actual problem ? at what stage and how does the install fail ?
w.r.t the display, once installed run : system-config-display --reconfig --noui
that should give you a usable setup, that you can then install the ati drivers onto ( get them from the ati website )

hey,
When the Centos 4.0 starts it installing after few minutes errors will start coming up
hdc: IRQ Probe failed (Oxfcfa) hdd: IRQ Probe failed (Oxfcfa) hdc: lost interrupt.
There is no problem with the cds as on the other machines I am able to install those cds but on this particular machine things are failing.
I am reconfigure or system-config-display but I am should be able to reach that stage where I can issue this command If I am not able to install the OS how can I issue this command.
I tried Suse 10.0 it got installed but when the KDE comes it shows an error "Frequency out of range". Suse 10.0 works fine If I boot into the init level 3 but not in init level 5.
But Centos and FC4 are not reaching that stage that I can boot to init level 3 they are failing within few minutes of installation process.
Thanks & Regards

hdc: IRQ Probe failed (Oxfcfa) hdd: IRQ Probe failed (Oxfcfa) hdc: lost interrupt.
sounds like your secondary ide interface is busted, bad cable or something.... tried a network install ?
you could also try booting the installer with ide1=nodma

Check your hardware by first booting from a Knoppix disk. And if you have installed Suse10 then try vesa driver for X problem as suggested.

Hey,
Thanks for your advice on that same machine Windows 2000 and Windows XP are installed and yestarday I installed few softwares from the combo drive so I think cd-rom is working fine and morever I was able to install suse 10.0from the combo drive.
I will try installing with hdc=noprobe or ide1=noprobe.

I will definitely do that.
