The desktop icon only means you have a drive, it doesn't mean a disc is mounted.

Interesting - I only get a desktop icon (in gnome) when a disc is in fact mounted. As previously stated, I don't get the icon for discs that don't mount, including the one I'm having trouble reading, and the CentOS 5.0 boot DVD (which mounts manually just fine...).
