I've just installed centos 6.4 from a live spin I had but can't get it to install yumex or xfce for that matter.
What is the secret? Or can it not be done ...

You need 3rd party repositories. For these two you need EPEL.
And I suggest upgrading to 6.5.

Yes, I know that from Google but I need to know where and how to get it?
I first downloaded 6.5 minimal but could never get it connected to my Ethernet/LAN!
So I downloaded 6.5 DVD [2 dvd's] but virtual box says the source is no good?
So far I've wasted a lot of time with something I expected to be simple like the many Fedora installs I have done where stuff usually works. I will be happy if I can get what I have working and then update/upgrade it to 6.5 perhaps.
Any help appreciated,
Bob

The secret is giving the list more detail, not just saying "can't get it to install xyz"... :)
e.g. what is the output you get from # yum install yumex
I don't recall what repo it's in offhand, but I know yumex runs just fine on 6.5, as long as PackageKit doesn't have the yum backend already occupied after you enter the root password in the dialog that prompts for it (I think it then retries 3 times before it exits if it can't get sole control of the yum backend).

Well, now it is finally trying to work. I had been trying earlier without success?
However it produces a screen full of "trying other mirror."

Do you have a working internet/network connection in VirtualBox?

Yes, I have a good high speed connection.
And the yumex problems have cleared! I tried again and everything appears to be working, dunno why? It is currently installing XFCE.
Thanks to all for your responses,
Bob

In fact, nothinf was broken.
That depends on your definition of broken. When it doesn't work "out of the box" it is broken even though it eventually underwent a miracle and began to do what I asked. I am still unable to install Centos 6.5 in vbox from the two DVD's. I still need to learn how to get 6.5 minimal connected to my LAN.
Presently it [6.4 Live installed in vm] is working as expected, doing the initial new system update which I do at this hour when usage is free from my ISP.
Again, thanks all for the fast responses,
Bob

a miracle implies magic.
they say any sufficient advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. i say its only magic if you don't understand it.

Yes, very true.
