Hi Chaps,
A couple of Sun Netra t105 have been donated to the CentOS Project. The machines are located in London and I was wondering if anyone in the area might be able to host these machines for us ?
They come with 19" rack rails. We would need access to some - but not a whole lot of - bandwidth. We plan on using these machines in developer roles, for code testing and sandbox builds. So, while we wont be using a lot of b/w - the machines being on a fast'ish link would still be appreciated.
Regards,

Would you want one or both of them in a single location?
Is 10mbit fiber fast enough?
Best, John Hinton

I have an "up to 8Mb BT Business ADSL line", all ways connected. its running a bit slow at the moment, (Incoming: 3776 kbps Outgoing: 448 kbps), and I plan to give BT a call to see if I can get it speeded up a bit, (it was running at 7456kbs when I first had it installed). How much band width would you be needing? I'm in Telford East Midlands. I don't have any racks at the moment, just lots of PC's but got a 3 bed flat with one room for my servers. I'm only planning to use my connection to host my own photo's for the stuff I'm going to sell on ebay at the moment and a bit of file sharing on the torrent network, and I don't mind stopping the file sharing to free up some band width. If that's any help?

Thanks for offering to help, i dont think 1U machines are the sorts you want to host at home (a) the noise will drive you over the edge [1] (b) they are not the most energy effecient machines when run outsude 24/7 AirCon environs.
Also the issue in that case will be the 448kbps uplink..
Coreix.net have stepped up to offer hosting. I will be speaking with them in a short while to see what and how we might be able to work out.

[1] I know, I have run rack machines at home for a while. [2] It seems, Starting from Johnny Hughes, that all John's are good people, and awesome at helping out the project! We should call our next project 'John' :)

Oh I did not know rack mounted machines could be so noise. I been toying with the idea of getting some old second hand units to play with to go with my 24 port 1U 10/100 hub I recently picked up at a local computer fair. Would it cause any problems stacking them on top of each other or would they have a tendency to over heat with out the racking? The room I would be running them in is a small bed room, large enough for a single bed and bed side table and I plan to install my own home made air conditioning!

Yes my connection seemed fast when I upgraded from a 2Mb connection at the beginning of the year, but it seems a bit sluggish now with Azureus file sharing and regular Linux distro DVD ISO down loads!

keep a note of my email address for the future and if I can be of any assistance along the same lines drop me a line, my connection will be increasing as and when finances allow.

Its not without reason that all Data Centers have notices on the walls : "You only have one pair of ears, protect them". ( and there are usually sound isolating ear muffs hanging on all doors :)

Hope the SO does not mind :0

A few years ago we picked up a secondhand rack-mount server to use as a test platform. It had dual NICs, and as part of the testbed we were setting up, we needed to give each IP address a different hostname. The names we chose were "pratt" and "whitney".
