I have a piii 550 with about 256Mb ram with an agp 32Mb video card and Im wanting to install a desktop that has the 3d cube on the screen and use the arrow keys to select wich desktop you want to use and it brings it to the screen. Has anyone heard of such or tried this?? Thanks

I do not know of anyone that has tried this on CentOS; however, I am under the impression it is not trivial. I have done it on FC5 and FC6, but both of those are of different breeds than CentOS4.x
You'd need to switch out a _lot_ of RPMS to get it to work I am pretty sure and it wouldn't be fun. I do not suggest this. FC5 was some work to get it functional and FC6 much much simpler. I would suggest using one of those if that functionality is a necessity for you.

I'm pretty sure that window manager (Compiz, I believe), runs everything through OpenGL. A 32 MB video card is most likely an older one, and it may not have enough power to make it usable. If you haven't already, you should probably look for info on what are good specs for running that setup.

Actually have used it on a PIII 750 with a classic radeon with 32mb of ram and it worked well as long as the screen res was under 1024x768. The limit was that r100 only supported textures upto 1024x1024.
Technically recent versions of Compiz can support either using AIGLX or XGL for compositing the desktop. Fedora uses AIGLX with the Xorg 7.1 drivers or nVidia's 96xx series drivers.
Now getting back to the CentOS related portion, I would not attempt to get Compiz on CentOS. You are at least going to need to replace more RPMS than I care to think about and most likely will break quite a bit. If you want the cube desktop try out FC 6, I run it at home as my desktop and so far it's been stable.
