I am considering moving a Fedora Core 2 server to CentOS 4.2. Is it possible to do this as an in place upgrade?
Also, I have a RH9 server that I would like to migrate to CentOS. Is that possible?
Thanks for any insights, Steve

---- both are possible, neither are recommended by upstream.
type 'linux upgradeany' in boot line before pressing <ENTER> key
if you have reasonable skill sets at working with Linux, you have the list to help with questions, you should be OK - especially if you back up critical files.

Thank you. I did the conversion last Sunday and it went well. (rpm -qa --last is your friend!) I forcibly removed all the packages that didn't get upgraded (except for a few that I knew were 3rd party), and then "yum install"'d the same packages. (There were only about 100 packages that I had to deal with after the upgrade which, all in all, is not that bad.)
I also have some FC4 machines that I would like to convert. I would guess that this would not be a good idea. Best to skip the FC5 upgrade next month and convert to CentOS 5 next fall.
Comments?
Oh, and by the way, thank you to the team that makes CentOS possible. I'm realizing that Linux has matured to the point that running cutting edge versions of software doesn't buy one that much anymore, since slightly older packages are usually good enough. The packages in CentOS 4 correspond, more or less, to Fedora packages which are 14 months old. I recently converted my own desktop from FC4 to CentOS and I really don't miss a thing.
And a big thank you to the Prominent North American Linux Vendor that goes beyond what they are legally required to do to make CentOS possible in a practical sense. :-)

yes, the packages versions in FC4 are superior that the version in CentOS. Is imposible to do an automatic downgrade to CentOS. wait for CentOS 5 for the conversion (after that u upgrade FC4 to FC5 in march)

Not to nitpick here, but 'superior' isn't really the right word. The packages are newer, yes. They're also less tested, and generally not as stable as a whole.

---- different target market for Fedora and CentOS
Neither is better, target is different. I would never use Fedora for a server that I intend to keep in service for over 6 months...I prefer Fedora for my desktop since it has newer, expanded feature set of end user applications but stability is not Fedora's greatest virtue as Jim is suggesting.
In any event...an 'upgrade' from any version of Fedora to any version of RHEL or CentOS or vice versa, from any version of RHEL or CentOS to any version of Fedora is never a recommended path and though some of these types of 'upgrades' might have a better chance of succeeding than others, someone who is not familiar with the differences in packaging or with the various Red Hat bundling overall is likely to struggle with the after effects of doing such an 'upgrade'.

yes my mistake (english is not my first language) the real word is newer.
