Hi, yum update is giving me the following errors:
# yum -y install mplayer Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, fs-snapshot, refresh-packagekit, security Setting up Install Process Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile epel/metalink | 12 kB 00:00 * base: centos.sonn.com * c6-media: * elrepo: elrepo.org * epel: mirrors.tummy.com * extras: mirrors.xmission.com * rpmfusion-free-updates: mirror.nexcess.net * rpmfusion-nonfree-updates: mirror.nexcess.net * updates: mirror.keystealth.org file:///media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] Could not open/read file:///media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml Trying other mirror. file:///media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] Could not open/read file:///media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml Trying other mirror. file:///media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] Could not open/read file:///media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml Trying other mirror. Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: c6-media. Please verify its path and try again
So, does this mean the server is down?

It means that c6-media (which is likely the CD or DVD that you installed Centos 6 from) is not present on your computer, probably because you removed it from the cd drive.

the c6-media pseudorepository shouldn't be enabled, you must have manually edited it to enable it ?

Probabaly when I cd'ed into /etc/yum.rep.d and ran vi * so it seems I enabled it in error.

I disabled the offending repo: c6-media in repo file CentOS-Media.repo
