I have yum working with dags and dries, etc, but I have done something to the main repo file that causes yum to error. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this file?
CentOS-Base.repo # # This file uses a new mirrorlist system developed by Lance Davis for CentOS. # The mirror system uses the connecting IP address of the client and the # update status of each mirror to pick mirrors that are updated to and # geographically close to the client. You should use this for CentOS updates # unless you are manually picking other mirrors. # # If the mirrorlist= does not work for you, as a fall back you can try the # remarked out baseurl= line instead. # #

By the way, I have just subscribed to this list, and already see that it has it's share of complainers. I have only used CentOS for a few weeks, but I am enjoying the experience. I tried FC4, but yum would hang each time I tried it, so it has been good to have things work. Good work on this distro! For whatever that is worth from a newbie. TIA ~Lorin

What is the error that yum gives you?

Everything works, but the repo file provided by CentOS. I am assuming I edited something wrong. I just checked the permissions, and they are the same as the other repo files. Any ideas? Will I get access to any other programs with the CentOS repo, or is everything provided through the others that are working? ~Lorin

Edit it with another editor? Which editor?

No! I am transferring from Suse 9.2, and have not used windows for a year and a half. I found Windows ME (Multidysfunctional Edition) to be a great reason to try something else! From console(after su and password), I ran nautilus. Accessed the file from nautilus, and edited it with gedit. If this is a problem, I may have to overcome my phobias and learn to edit things direct from console. ~Lorin
I suggest you try coping the file somewhere else (ie making a backup) and then cutting out everything except for one [..] section from it and seeing which if any of those work/break...
Cheers, MaZe.

To eliminate editor concerns, may I suggest an "od -c" of the files? If your line endings of other than "\n" you have a problem. Otherwise not likely. Also, see if you see unexpected whitespace embedded or at the end of something.
Lastly, "man -k yum" and man the docs listed there. Something might jump out at you that makes you go "hmmmm...."

OOPS! Sorry to reply to myself. Forgot that not everyone has run makewhatis. Needed for "man -k yum" to work. "man makewhatis" for details.
