Try to reinstall using "rpm --force" ncurses-devel and ncurses packages, and after that to run ldconfig -v and past here its output.
Also, output from "rpm -V ncurses" and "rpm -V ncurses-devel" is welcome.
Thanks for your response attached are the requested output. There was no output from "rpm -V ncurses" and "rpm -V ncurses-devel".

Where did you get ncurses 5.5 from, and how did you install it?
Thanks for your response. I got it the latest from karan centos extra repos and from centos plus. I installed them using yum.

I have two versions on my pc ncurses 5.4.13 which is from centos.karan.org. I complied version 5.5 from the source, hoping that might fix the problem. I downloaded it from ncurses website.

No repository on centos.karan.org has ncurses 5.5. Neither has centosplus.

5.4.13 is the ncurses version which comes with CentOS. And which normally isn't broken.

How should breaking the package management on your box by introducing self compiled software which *replaces* packages from the base system help fix things?
If you're lucky the ncurses sources have an uninstall target so you can say "make uninstall" in the source tree.
Then get the ncurses rpms from http://mirror.centos.org/ and install them with rpm -ivh --replacepkgs ncurses*.rpm.
Ralph
Thanks for your help, I am new to linux. The version which comes with CentOS, for some reason installs broken on my system. I did a fresh install a few weeks ago, did not add any external repo except for plus and the other ones that are not abled in the Centos base repo. After an update ncurses was installed and it was already broken.
I was not lucky they do not have a make uninstall in the source tree.

This is very strange then, because I've done several installs this past week for testing, and ncurses has been fine every single time. I'm wondering if there's something else going on with your particular system/install.
I cant say if something else is going wrong with my install. I only found out that the ncurses package was broken when I tried to install ruby-gnome. I have done several installs with the same result. I think I might try another reinstall.

Where did you get ruby-gnome? I cannot find it in the "standard repositories" (rpmforge, kbs, centos).
Cheers,
Ralph

I would venture to guess that your method of determining the symlink's status is incorrect. That or you're using a rebuild of centos that is horribly broken in some fashion.
I have done 2 installs today, and I can assure you that ncurses and ncurses-devel work quite well.
But the packages are still broken.
I doubt this very much.
From the console, run 'rpm -V ncurses'
if the above command returns with no output, then the rpm is installed properly and all symlinks are intact.
Below is some output from my system to show you what I mean:
[jperrin@insanity lib]$ rpm -V ncurses [jperrin@insanity lib]$ [jperrin@insanity lib]$ ll libncurses* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 409138 Feb 21 2005 libncurses.a -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 109760 Feb 21 2005 libncurses++.a -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 513792 Feb 21 2005 libncurses_g.a lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Nov 3 2005 libncurses.so -> libncurses.so.5 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Nov 3 2005 libncurses.so.5 -> libncurses.so.5.4 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 879963 Feb 21 2005 libncurses.so.5.4 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 109760 Feb 21 2005 libncurses++w.a -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 467576 Feb 21 2005 libncursesw.a -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 580634 Feb 21 2005 libncursesw_g.a lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Nov 3 2005 libncursesw.so -> libncursesw.so.5 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Nov 3 2005 libncursesw.so.5 -> libncursesw.so.5.4 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1027957 Feb 21 2005 libncursesw.so.5.4 [jperrin@insanity lib]$ sudo rm -i libncurses.so rm: remove symbolic link `libncurses.so'? y [jperrin@insanity lib]$ rpm -V ncurses missing /usr/lib/libncurses.so [jperrin@insanity lib]$
Based on your previous statement it would seem that your ncurses packages are fine.

My method for seeing if the links are broken is during a search for ncurses. When I sort by type it shows about 7 files with the description link (broken).

OK ... the problem here seems to be that you are trying to build something that is not included in CentOS (ruby-gnome).
So, from what I understand, your goal is to get ruby-gnome to work ... and you are basing the fact that ncurses is broken on the output of this ruby-gnome build process. Is this correct?
Is this where you got the source: http://ruby-gnome2.sourceforge.jp/
I have no idea if it works, but ruby-gnome was replaced by ruby-gnome2.
Thanks, Johnny Hughes

Yes I that is where I'm getting the source from, yes because of the output from building that package . And when a do a search for ncurses , then sort by type there are seven files that has link next to it and broken in brackets. I could attach a screen shot if needed. My orginal post had a screen shot attached to it.
Thanks, Moyena
