I did try that, but had difficulties in compiling it from source-- it's not in the yum repositories (either CentOS or Dag Wieers).
Since ftp daemons use pam and pam can use ldap if configured via authconfig, I cannot envision a scenario where an ftp daemon would need to contact ldap directly.

I'm new to this list, did you give a try to pure-ftpd? you could auth with native Linux users, LDAP, MySQL, PGSQL, puredb format, and so on, with enough security and stability

I think you are not right, extras karan CentOs repository has that package available.
